The Night Natto Went Crazy

So, it's 2:41 AM, and I'm still awake. I've been lying in bed for two hours hoping to fall asleep, but my mind keeps replaying every single game in this series. If you know me, you'd know that I'm generally a chill, relaxed person who doesn't really let too much get to him, but after that last game, I seriously need to vent. I haven't felt like this after a loss since the penultimate game of '04. You know the one.

Star-divide

I never thought I'd see a series worse than the ones earlier in the year in San Diego. I never thought I'd see a game worse than the one Lincecum started against the Reds at home. The Giants managed to give me both of those over this weekend. Never before have I seen a more putrid display of baseball. I don't care if this team were 10 games above .500 or 10 games below. These losses were absolutely brutal in any context. What really kills me is that every single game in the series was winnable. In fact, the Giants actually held leads for most of the middle two games. However, they found spectacularly excruciating ways to royally screw things up, and somehow each loss was worse than the previous.

Every player not named J. Sanchez, Lincecum, Zito, Cain, Wilson, Medders, and Affeldt should be ashamed of themselves. The defense was absolutely disgusting. None of the hitters in the lineup came to the plate with any sort of plan in mind. Slider in the dirt! SWING! Hmm, looks like a high fastball, gotta swing at that! Oh crap, that pitch is going to hit me. I'd better swing at it to avoid it! Even when they have a chance to make an out to score a runner from third, the hitters find ways to not do a single productive thing at all. Hey, this pitcher has been kind of wild. Time to pounce on that first pitch! Even our best hitter swung at a ball in the dirt in a 3-2 count with a runner on third, a run that would have gotten Lincecum off the hook from Bochy's incompetence. Ugh. For whatever reason, the one hitter that usually does put together a halfway decent at bat didn't start a single game in the series. In his career, Fred Lewis is hitting .362/.405/.638 in Coors Field in 69 ABs. He had 3 ABs in the entire series. Absolutely brilliant strategy, Bochy.

Speaking of which, I don't think I've seen a manager who is as clueless as he is when it comes to taking out a pitcher when he's at his worst. If it were just one game, I'd probably shrug it off, but every single game had instances where Bochy should have taken out the pitcher. It's not even hindsight either. A good number of us thought, "Lincecum probably shouldn't be starting the 7th inning..." or "It might be a good idea to take out Martinez here." But hey! If you can't rely on your ACE, on whom can you rely?!

Also, more hit and runs should definitely help this offense! Especially on 3-2 counts with nobody out! Bunt late in a game with a runner on second and no outs? Nah, my stud, power-hitting centerfielder will knock him in! Even though he's looked silly on every single pitch thrown that night.

So, I'm pretty sick of Bochy. I've was pretty indifferent toward him for a while, but his irksome qualities have built up and rubbed me the wrong way. If he were fired, I wouldn't miss him at all. The Brewers were leading Wild Card leaders last year, and they fired their manager in September. Why can't our stupid team do something like that? Put Ron Wotus in charge or maybe Roberto Kelly. Hell, give Lou Seal the job for all I care.

Now here I am at the end of my rant. What am I going to do? For one thing, I'm not watching tonight's game. I know they're going to talk about the Rockies games and show heartbreaking replays, and I just can't handle that. The Giants could win or lose. I'm numb to it at this point. But I'll likely start watching again come Wednesday or Thursday and be sucked back into everything again. I told a few friends that I wouldn't go to another Giants game for the rest of the season. When I get up in the morning and reread this, I may shake my head and see it as silly and knee-jerk. Of course I'm going to continue rooting for the Giants. They're my team, pus-bloated warts and all. This team has outperformed all of our expectations and has a lot of likable guys who are sincerely trying hard and want to win as badly as the rest of us do.

But I'm still going to be pissed.

I feel you. Yesterday might be the longest, most stressful day I’ve had with my current employer… by the time I got home, it was the 12th inning.
In the top of the 14th, I actually felt like ‘Hey, a least one thing didn’t go wrong today’. I was a fool – just as premature as Zorak was in the dugout before going out to that debacle of a bottom half.
And here I am at 5:30AM, also unable to sleep and two sets of craptastic events running through my head… not bunting with no-one out and a man on second, walking a pitcher (!) to force in a guy who could barely hobble, the only run until the 14th scored via walks and errors… Panda getting hurt!
This one hurts.

Utter frustration and futility.

I listened to the bottom of the last inning while lying in bed

I heard Flem call the slam and turned off the radio while muttering one word:

I’ll be there tomorrow expecting the worst, but I can’t like this team. They are stupid.

I had hope after that Houston series in August. I thought that maybe this team actually belongs in the wild card race. Yeah, hope gone. I should have learned from 2006 when we beat the Pads at home to lead the division. I remember being really happy after that game, and then we lost 9 straight.

I’ll be at the park tonight too, but i won’t expect much. . . . anymore.

I listened to that game in its entirety. From 8:40 PM to 1:40 AM, I listened to the most painful 5 hours of my life. It was a completely unacceptable shit show, one that makes me cringe to even think about. 5 runs on 2 hits to blow a 3 run lead and lose the season… that’s just wonderful.

I don’t have anything “new” to say because frankly, it’s all been said. This team, especially the people paid to hit (I can’t justify calling them the offense) are the biggest bunch of losers and hacks (zing!) assembled in a looooong time. David Eckstein would be an upgrade, because at least he takes a fucking pitch. And I HATE David Eckstein.

Just like the season, my rant’s over.

Wow, even the most level-headed of the McCoven is ranting. These are, truly, the blurst of times.

I don’t really understand how a team can be so clearly overachieving and yet still get so little out of what talent it has, but somehow the Giants manage it.

by Evan on Aug 25, 2009 6:30 AM PDT reply actions

meh

You’ll get over it. It was a house of horrors before 14 innings of craziness.

I’ve had luck playing basketball at a certain court. Shots rim out, crazy bounces, bad calls, everything you can imagine goes wrong. Yes, it does becomes a self-fufilling prophecy and ideally you want to be able to overcome that. Sometimes you can’t, and you just need to get the fuck outta dodge.

I’d like to meet the Giants fan who truly thought “GAME OVER BABY” after we dropped three in the top of the inning. Did anyone really think that the three run lead was safe going into the 14th? This is Coors. The game went on so long it got to the point of “ugh just get this over with,” considering we’ve got the dbacks already tomorrow and need to catch a plane home. It’s not that tough a loss; it’s Coors. The players know it’s a bandbox and they know shit like this happens. Unbelievable is definitely the word of the night.

If I’m a player on this team, I laugh the entire way home. It was just so…silly the way it all went down. Walk off salami? Whatever dude. Oppo field to the deepest part of the yard? Yeah, sure. Double plays dotting all the extra innings? Yeah man. First extra innings game in Denver this season? Sounds good.

Of all the games to get really down about, this was not one of them. Pandoval’s calf needs to hold up, and if it can, we’ve still got an interesting month of baseball left in us. Hum baby go giants.

I was just numb, staring blankly at the post game show like an idiot, even though it was approaching 3 AM back in New York. I actually thought it was the worst loss we’ve had since the 2003 playoffs when Jose Lose Jr. dropped that ball. I can see how the whole series could drive you crazy, but I prefer to focus on the last inning that cost us the split. Why pull Medders after he got Barmes out? If he walked him yes, but HE GOT HIM OUT!! I don’t care about the pitch count, he’s a veteran and you can give him a few days off afterwards. He was sharp and the other two fuckups left in the bullpen were dreadful on Saturday, with one of them being dreadful all season. As good as Medders was, how do you walk Fowler when he’s up there crippled? As it was, he threw strike three on the previous pitch, but the ump gave a late timeout. How the fuck does Justin Miller walk Adam Eaton? To add insult to injury, Tracy had told Eaton not to swing at anything, because he feared a DP. As for Merkin Valdez, he fucking sucks. He’s sucked all year, but the Giants’ have never done the right thing because he was out of options. As a result, they’ve wasted a roster space the entire season. With one week left before roster expansion they won’t cut him now, but they ought to, just to show they’re as angry as we are.
By the way, I’ll be in front of my TV watching them again tonight. They’re my team.

For therapy, we should compile the worst losses over the last couple of years. The only one that comes to mind right now is Benitez’s double balk, walk-off HR loss against the Mets.

A Benitez relieved R Ortiz.
J Reyes walked.
J Reyes to second on balk by A Benitez.
E Chavez sacrificed to third, J Reyes to third.
C Beltran grounded out to second.
J Reyes scored on A Benitez' balk.

Wow! These games are eerily similar:

• Both opposing teams managed by Jim Tracey
• Both had three run leads going into the final ½ inning
• Both had at least two pitchers not get an out
• Both had walked a run home
• Giants committed two errors in each game
• Yorvit Torrealba played in both games
• Our CF then was batting (Grissom) .277 with a 765 OPS
• Our CF now is batting .278 with a 778 OPS
• Both won by a walk off GrandSlam

I still like this team

in the sense that I hated the teams the past two years. It’s interesting that these posts crop up every time the Giants stink up yards around the NL, often followed by all the “Sabean is a genius/I love Botchy” and “Why are you all complaining when we’re competing for the wild card” posts when they have a good home stand. All the wavers of both banners seem to forget that a team that goes 7-3 on homestands and 3-7 on road trips is a .500 ballclub. I admit that might be enough to get into the playoffs occasionally, but I don’t expect much more from a team that has gone an entire year with Molina batting cleanup and (basically) no one batting leadoff. At least Pablo has emerged to be a real middle-of-the-order hitter.

I don’t think we’ll see so many of those bipolar posts (biposts?) now, however, unless the Giants sweep the Rox in the upcoming visit. And I doubt that will happen, because what little depth or bench the Giants had seems to be banged up and the bullpen seems to be wearing down. JSanchez arose from the ashes just in time to pick up where “Randy” “Johnson” left off when he went out, but there’s been no one else to do that for the other spots.

Just tell yourself that getting FSanchez and Garko were really positioning for next year, trying to try to fill in some roster holes and be that much further along by winter meetings and free agent season. And maybe go back and read some of the very pessimistic preseason posts (likely including mine) that never thought this squad would sniff .500. I’m sad to see everyone disappointed, but I’m glad to have actually seen some good performances this year, a few water shots by the fellows in black hats, and a no-hitter by a guy who was yanked from the rotation. There might be a few more before October rolls around.

I started the “Giants fan thing” three seasons ago, and this was the first year we’ve actually had a chance to make the playoffs. Three days ago, in the post-game thread, I professed my love for baseball and the giants after a big win.

Many, many people warned me that I would have my heart ripped out sooner rather than later. Stubbornly, I ignored them and said I believe in this team. It didn’t take too long for their prophecies to come true.

I haven’t felt this awful the day after a loss since 4th and 26 (i’m a packers fan). Glad I have plans tonight, so I can actually have a forced day off from this team.

I can’t remember the last time I watched a loss so bad that I was miserable for the next day, at least. As an Avs fan it was probably in ‘02 WCF when Roy botched the statue of liberty play (against the Red Wings of all teams). So it’s been 7½ years since I felt this bad as a sports fan…

Anyone that walks a pitcher with the bases loaded on 4 pitches needs to go. I don’t care what kind of flukey good performance he has given to this point. Someone who does that in the biggest game of the year is not a major league ballplayer.

The sad thing is, this is basically going to be our offense next year. The only different players will likely be Winn and Bengie leaving. Nate will hopefully replace Winn, and while he’s an upgrade, he’s not going to change the offense much. Bengie will either (a) be extended and we have to endure more of his cleanup duties, (b) be replaced by a Zaun-type, which won’t hep much offensively, or © be replaced by Posey, which could be either a very good or very bad thing. You’d have to think Posey’s ceiling for a rookie season next year would be Pablo’s season this year, hopefully with more walks.

I don’t see how this team contends in the next couple years unless two things happen to the offense:

1) Posey is brought up and does well
2) They sign Holliday or Bay, neither of which will likely happen because they will get better offers elsewhere.

But hey, at least Zito and Sanchez are pitching well!

by howtheyscored on Aug 25, 2009 9:17 AM PDT up reply actions

No secondary skills?

I’m asking this in all seriousness…have you watched him play defense? He’s absolutely a plus defender. He has good range, a surte glove and has a + arm that’s both strong and accurate and he’s smart; always throwing to the right base and hitting the cutoff man.

He temporarily saved the game last night with a ball hit to right field. The Rockies held the runner at 3rd out of respect for Nate’s arm. Nate threw a perfect seed to the cutoff man. I’m confident they would have been running had Winn been in RF.

I’d say his defense is a secondary skill and I’d also say his plus speed (and accompanying baserunning ability) is a secondary skill.

Criticize his lack of walks and HRs and you have a point. Say he only can hit .300 and do nothing else is just silly talk and I’m not buying it.

last night, I couldn’t sleep. Usually when I go to bed, I’m out cold in about 3 minutes. Last night I lied awake for an entire hour and still couldn’t sleep.

I wasn’t even thinking about the game itself, it’s the frustration and the disappointment knowing full well that this season is over. That this team pretty much showed me everything I needed to know in one half inning of baseball.

Today is a new day, but I have canceled plans to attend any future games this season. I had setup a group of 6 ppl to go to the Rockies series, and all of us decided we just don’t want to be a part of this painful season any longer.

I’m still going to finish the video because I’ve put so much time into it already, it will be the last thing I do for the Giants this season.

by jctGamer on Aug 25, 2009 8:39 AM PDT reply actions

I wouldn’t say the season is OVER. There are still 6 games at home left against the Rockies, and 6 against the Dodgers, I believe.

Yeah, the team is down, and yeah, they haven’t done well in the past after demoralizing losses. But you never know. Look at how the Dodgers have fallen on their faces. It could continue, and the same could happen to the Rockies. It’s going to be a long winter if they don’t make the playoffs, so I’m going to stay optimistic and keep hoping until they are actually eliminated, and save the pity party until winter.

I suspect I’ll be a lot more positive once the offseason comes, because I’ll have visions of Posey and MadBum dancing in my head, and maybe Neal down the stretch run if things go well, and things will be looking up.

And then, of course, they’ll give contract extensions to Bochy and Sabean, and make Shawon Dunston the new hitting coach, and Sabean will make a ridiculous free agent signing, and trade Villalona, Neal, and Bucardo for, I don’t know, Mark Teahen or something, and the process will start all over again. The same thing, over and over

For all the things that went wrong in last night’s game, the thing that makes it worse is that the weaknesses and faults of this team are blatantly clear, and yet they NEVER make necessary adjustments. NEVER.

I know that none of the players actually read fan blogs, but all season I figured that since everyone here keeps seeing this team make the same mistakes and shortcomings, some one in that clubhouse would see it as well. No plate discipline, for one thing. Previous batter walks, then Velez swings at the first pitch of the very next at bat. Bengie Molina still hasn’t learned to lay off the tricky slider that bounces TWO FEET in front of the plate. Ishikawa will swing at the low-inside breaking ball every single time.

And Bochy seems determined to get our pitchers to fail. Keep putting Howry into situations in which he consistently blows it, leave Timmy out there when EVERYBODY can see he has been laboring (and struggles in humid weather), remove a pitcher after one batter even if the result is a strikeout. Baseball is great because there are 162 games, and plenty of time to make adjustments, and I can’t stand to see our dumbass manager and braindead hitters make the same damn mistakes every single game. It never fails.

Having said that, I’ll be at tonight’s game. Mostly for the garlic fries.

I’ve been watching baseball games for 30+ years. But I’m not a major league manager, or a scout, or a stathead, so I don’t pretend to know anywhere near as much about the game as the “experts.”

That said, if you’re leading a team with an historically inept offense, one that can barely hit the ball out of the infield most of the time, why on earth aren’t you spending every BP during the regular season working on the elements of small ball—the bunt, the steal, the aggressive baserunning, and the sacrifice play? In the late innings of a tie ballgame in late August, with your team still in the playoff race, if you get the leadoff batter on base, WHY AREN’T YOU BUNTING? Why aren’t you exchanging as many outs as you have at your disposal to get this rarest of rare, a baserunner, 90 feet closer to home plate?

It’s a rhetorical question, of course.

I guess if you’re a Rockies fan or a neutral fan, it was great.

But, like, I don’t really see the epic comeback… the Giants gave them three of five baserunners that inning (including refusing to throw strike 3 to a guy who could barely walk and walking a bullpen pitcher on five pitches). What’s epic about that, other than the level of failure by the Giants bullpen?

Also, it sure would have helped if Howry could have gotten more than one out FFFFFFUUU

I was surprised Howry was brought in at all there. I thought the better move was to go with Wilson from the start, since Howry had been struggling and this was an important game and all.

Obviously Wilson ended up getting out of Howry’s jam, but I still think that would have been the better play.

He hasn’t looked good, but I bet he only gives up a 2-run single instead of a grand slam.

And You obviously can’t predict 14 innings, but with both offenses looking so inept, I thought the possibility of extra innings was significant, and Howry would be more useful later than he was in that situation.

FWIW I thought tracy not walking Scheurholtz right away was a mistake. So Bochey puts Sanchez up there on deck. So what. Nate and get either a pitcher or a broken-down Sanchez with the bases loaded.

I thought the game was poorly managed from both sides, I guess is what I’m saying.

He did pretty much pitch around Schierholtz that AB though, I don’t think Nate got a single strike. The fact that there is a chance that he gets himself out by swinging at pitches out of the zone makes it worth it to pitch around him rather than straight out IBB him.

Looking at Gameday, some of the pitches were closer than I thought. The count went to 3-2, but that’s because Nate swung at EVERYTHING. He didn’t take a single strike (Gameday shows the first two pitches as strikes, but I though the second pitch, at least, looked like it was more at the shoulders than the letters.)

Yeah, well he certainly was aggressive, which was a failing right there. (don’t managers have a red light for pitches. why not use it there?), or maybe he was being aggressive so he could try and score some runs because he knew Medders was coming up next. Which I guess is acceptable, but swinging at bad pitches isn’t a good thing (as simple as this sounds).

Well, he kinda had to be aggressive there though. He knew Medders was up after him, so he had to think that driving those runs in was up to him, so he had to swing at everything close.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I would like to ignore the fact that he swung at crap in all his other ABs too.

8 hours later...

I was able to get some rest and have slowly pieced together the remaining bits of sanity I still have. I changed the desktop wallpaper at work from a picture of Mays Field to this and some of my other artwork. I’m still not going to watch tonight’s game, but I’ll probably somehow muster the energy to watch tomorrow’s. At least it’s Taco Tuesday.

"What do you think of the execution of the Giants offense?"

“I think it would be a good idea.”

The Giants have just been astonishingly bad at situational hitting. Joe Martinez gets the most boring job of the night as he pinch-runs for Garko after a leadoff double, and all he can do is stand on second base as Rowand and Renteria do the two things guaranteed not to advance a runner from second: strike out and ground to third.

Or, to rephrase that in shorter form: Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh!

Great picture of Bochy in this stream of posts.

Except the guy in the picture looks twice as good as Bochy did last night after the game. To me Bochy looked like a guy who just was eaten alive by the ebola virus.

To me that was the worst. I was especially aggravated at Rowand’s super macho, which translates to super selfish, approach. LOOK MOTHERFUCKER, YOU HAVEN"T PUT A BAT ON A BALL ALL NIGHT, So just stick your pathetic bat out there and let the ball roll towards 2b. That would have the advantage of putting our runner on 3b w/ one out. FUCKER.
I don’t see much leadership or much caring about winning. for all the veteran gamer moxiness I still see waaaaaaaaaay too much "I’m gonna crush this pitch and ride home a hero.
I, too, was up til past 3 and cannot compose a sentence. I won’t be watching tonight, nor tomorrow. I have a big project at work, so I will dive into that and see how I feel in 2,3 weeks

THIS, THIS, THIS!!! I hate how everybody in the media talks about how great a team player Rowand is — all I see is swinging for the fences every time he’s up, and air-mailing the cutoff man every time he makes a throw. Those two things are staples of me-first baseball, not team play. But this year, he wins our respect. Not.

It was 11pm here when it ended. I turned off MLB.tv and stared at my screen for literally 20 mins with tear-burning rage in my eyes. I was doing everything I could not to explode because the last time I exploded was the Timmy-Reds game and I ended up destroying my hard drive and erasing every piece of data on my computer.

Hey Fellow Giants fans

Take heart— these are the Giants! We’re gonna rally back! Then we’re gonna lose a play in game, or the last game of the season, probably by blowing a 3-5 run lead.

One thing I'd like to say

I can’t criticize Brian Wilson. Not for a while, at least. I was never a Wilson hater but he did annoy me at times. Even for those times, I will not say a word against him.

He earned it last night.
