Is Aaron Rowand the worst Sabean signing ever?

I cannot think of one thing that the guy does that he is really all that above average at. Hitting? Nope. Fielding? Not really, he can't even hit the cutoff man or throw to the right base. Does he do the little things, like moving guys over? No, not at all (witness numerous three pitch strikeouts in key situations). Does he hit for power? Not really. Average? No, not really. Does he make the pitcher work? Not at all.

He is pretty much completely useless. And Sabean signed him for 5 years and 60 million dollars. Great. How often will we have to hear about that when it comes time to make a move? At least Failgar is off the books next year and Zito has been at least somewhat effective this year.

Ummmm…Barry Lamar Zito?

by biff pocoroba on Aug 24, 2009 11:10 PM PDT reply actions   2 recs

on a good team this year with some offensive support

Zito would have about 14 wins.

Granted, he has been very disappointing and up to this year he would win hands down, but Rowand is just completely useless.

Lots more years w/ questionable offense @ twenty million per year = Ouch

I’m sorry, I can’t hear you, Aaron Rowand just swung at a slider low and outside.

/calmly walks back to dugout, shaking head

/puts helmet in rack, still shaking head

/continues to be absolutely useless (throwing to the wrong base, etc) with no repercussions for his crappy play, whilst Kevin Frandsen rots and Fred Lewis gets put on a milk carton.

No, not by a long shot

I know everyone likes to hate Rowand but he’s actually been pretty decent this year. 800+ OPS every month bar one (July when he was injured) and solid defence at a premium position makes for a good player.

He’s been worth more than he’s been paid this year. And whilst he wasn’t worth what he was paid last year he wasn’t overpaid by an egregious, worst signing ever, amount.

Lets say he has 12 homers, approx 780 OPS, and plays good defense.

He has to have the worst 780 OPS on record. The weakest 780 going. He cannot hit any pitcher with a good slider who knows how to throw the pitch low and outside just off the plate. The giants as a team have such a poor approach to hitting that there is no other outcome in the Giants way, than to fire Carnie Lanceford. He is a giants fan. He was a gritty player and a tough out. We need the batting coach that taught Barry Bonds patience at the plate. Giants walked 13 men tonight, that is the real reason why they lost. And of course the giant for the most part refused to take the walks.

by bradleybear on Aug 25, 2009 12:57 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I thought we decided the Giants approach problem was Shawon Dunston’s fault? Lets not forget that Carney was the hitting coach in AAA for the very team that crushed all our hopes and dreams tonight. It was only like a month ago that there was an article in the paper about how he helped Ian Stewart, Seth Smith, and helped turn around Clint Barmes’ career. I don’t think you can blame one dude that has been in the organization for like a year and a half for the shitty coaching they have gotten over their entire minor league careers

Using batting average

That explains just about everything.

Well that’s because Carney is with us now! Only joking, your point has some validity, i was just being snarky as batting average is a poor way of making it.

Have you looked at what the Giants second basemen have done? You make it seem like they are oozing infielders with .750+ OPS

Besides, Lanceford is going to be unable to convince 10 year veterans to change their approach. Look at Bengie, his OBP is barely higher than his AVG but he refuses to change his approach. Its frustrating and I’d like to know where the lack of discipline is originating from, but I don’t think its Lanceford. The problem is probably more attributable to the type of players Sabean targets (Uribe, Sanchez as this year’s examples) and the hitting philosophy taught in the minor league system.

The philosophy has never made much sense to me, unless you have an entire team of high AVG, high OPS hitters, which the Giants lack. The crowd on this site seems to be just as confused as I am as to the Giant’s approach and unwillingness to change. Hopefully we see a change next year?

Yeah, we need more players who put up the strong 760 OPS instead!

The Giants lack of discipline isn’t Carney’s fault (although he may or may not help), it’s because we don’t acquire players with good discipline and don’t empasise discipline enough in the minor leagues.

The worst Sabean signing ever

is a personal thing: it’s the one that makes you realize that he will never assemble a championship squad. For me, it was Neifi F. Perez, who had just come off two of the most horrific seasons ever turned in in Kansas City, and that’s saying something.

When it happens to you, you’ll know.

by 2X2L on Aug 25, 2009 4:34 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

This reminds me of how we uses to slag Pedro Feliz. It isn’t Rowand’s fault that he isn’t that good, it’s that he is put into a more important offensive role because this team can’t hit. If the team has one or two more big bats, Rowand is an afterthought. The fact that he and Molina are such Important hitters on this team says more about Sabean than it does about Rowand.

Note that I’m not really disagreeing – his ABs are horrible to watch.

by North Side Chicago Expatriate Giants Fan on Aug 25, 2009 6:27 AM PDT via mobile reply actions   0 recs

I know Rowands at bats can be very frustrating to watch, but he is actually a useful player. He is slightly (SLIGHTLY) above average with his bat and this year he has been good defensively and up to this point he has been worth 2.3 wins per fangraphs. As NSCEGF said its not Rowands fault that he is such an important part of the team, but he is a useful player as above average center fielders, or even players in general, don’t grow on trees, especially with the way Sabean waters his.

Congrats to my soul mate and birth brother Zach Wheeler on being drafted into greatness. Should I just buy my Wheeler jersey now, or wait till my next birthday?

by TexasRanger on Aug 25, 2009 9:04 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

is he really useful in center?

he has a rag for an arm and throws to the wrong base. Also, keeping him in center keeps Winn in left field, and Winn has no place in a corner outfield spot, but as a CF he’s not that bad.

by joe t on Aug 25, 2009 9:34 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yes, he’s useful in center, he’s been above average every season bar one. Rowand’s a better player so should be keeping Winn out of center. The fact that Winn’s better (or not as the case may be) than our candidates for LF has nothing to do with Rowand.

his wOBA, UZR and RF are all below the median for NL CFs.

I’m not a math major but I don’t see this guy as even an average CF compared to the rest of the league.

by nogooddeed on Aug 25, 2009 4:23 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Per UZR he is 10th out of 25 qualified CFs which I do believe is above the median, he is also 10th in wins above replacement with the same 25 CFs, he is 15th in wOBA however you add up the total package and you get an above average player, and on this Giants team that is nothing to scoff at. I’ll say it here: AS FRUSTRATING AS HE CAN BE, SCOTT IS NOT THE PROBLEM

1) Barry Zito
2) Armando Benitez
3) Edgardo Alfonzo
4) Neifi Perez
5) Michael Tucker
6) Dave Roberts
7) Edgar Renteria

I don’t like Rowand very much, but no, he’s not.

Brian Sabean wants to kick tires. I want to kick Brian Sabean.

I agree with your order. The Roberts acquisition really had be fuming. When you throw in the horrible trades Sabean has pulled off over the recent years you really have to wonder why he still has a job. Blackmail?

Barry Zito is still a useful player. Of course Sabes overpaid for him, but I can’t regard him as a terrible signing on par with Neifi and Roberts. I’d put ’em as follows:

Roberts
Neifi
Benitez
Alfonzo
Tucker
Rent
Rowand
Zito

People get hung up on the money. Me, I just want to win—hell, it’s not my money. Yeah, I know the money we paid Zito could have gone to sign someone else, but who? Zito can still play. Roberts never could.

We could have thrown 120 million at a guy like Texiera. Or, they could have taken that 120 million and signed a couple of good hitters. That’s why I believe its the Giant’s worst signing. But I definitely see your point, except I think Rowand is still more useful to this club than Zito and he costs the team less.

I'd say re-signing Bonds in 2007 was his worst move

Rowand and value

If Rowand had been a free agent he would have been lucky to sign for 10 mil and 2 years. And everyone would be happy with the value for the money. Unfortunately he signed for 60 and 5. A deal about 2 years too long and 30 mil too rich. The guy is a good player, just not good enough for that contract. Similar to Juwan Howard all those years ago.
