"Giants second baseman Freddy Sanchez will miss Monday's game against the Rockies due to a shoulder problem and could be headed to the disabled list, reports the Oakland Tribune.
Sanchez has missed 10 of 23 games since joining the Giants and the whispers in San Francisco are that the second baseman may be a "soft" player, a tag that his former Pirates manager strongly disputes. "I can tell you he grinded his way through all kinds of aches and pains," current Rockies boss Jim Tracy told the Tribune."

It's OKAY guys, Velez can play second!

Context, people. More context is good. Less context is bad. If you're willing to be reductive, then you're willing to be wrong.

Shit Happens!

This isn’t related to the knee that was bothering him before we traded for him. Long term (looking at next year as well as this year) this is still likely to workout for the Giants.

Does it worry you that he has had problems with both shoulders now? Yeah, it could be chance, but I wonder…

I’m with you there, and I’m not ready to complain about Sabean based on this deal alone, but…

Long term (looking at next year as well as this year) this is still likely to work out for the Giants.

…I wouldn’t use the word likely there. I could even see the Giants not exercising the $8M option, trying to sign him to a cheaper multi-year deal, and losing him entirely.

by Grant on Aug 24, 2009 4:27 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I Don't Share Your Fear Of Losing Him Entirely.

I do however think an extention in the neighborhood of 2 years $13M or 3 years $17M is likely to be worked out before the Giants have to decide to exercise the option. if such a deal isn’t worked out I would still expect the option to be exercised unless Sanchez’s is injured (or get’s injured) enough to put next year at risk which in my judgement is unlikely.

by giantsrainman on Aug 24, 2009 4:42 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree with GRM and disagree with Grant

Have I gone mad? I don’t see a huge market for Freddy Sanchez and I don’t think the Giants’ will have a problem getting him signed even if they don’t pick up the option. The big market teams are not looking for second basemen, and the Giants will probably offer him more money than any other mid market team would. They always do.

Should I be frightened or comforted?

The will keep Sanchez, because they always throw a bunch of money at slightly above average vets on the wrong side of their peak.

Honestly, I think taking the option, the letting him walk (with an arbitration offer) is the best course. He’s very solid for the short-medium term, but I wouldn’t want to get locked in to Sanchez for three or four seasons.

Seems entirely possible that it’s related to the back issue that was bothering him before we traded for him though.

My Bucardo is better than yours.

A hot August weekday, before a small crowd, when the only thing at stake is the tissue-thin difference between a thing done well and a thing done ill. Insofar as the clutch hitter is not a sportswriter's myth, it is a vulgarity, like a writer who writes only for money.

so he's just breaking down all over the place?

Oh good, instead of the same problem it just appears that he is injury prone.

Great news

No, he had a back injury too. Missed a week in July.

by Evan on Aug 24, 2009 9:24 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

This is the point I think most people (like GRM) miss — it’s not this injury, but the fact he’s had so many in such a short time which worries me. His back, his knee, both shoulders. Even before the trade, some people (I believe KLaw was one) were suggesting he was breaking down physically.

I think "likely" is too strong a word.

It depends on three things:1) how does he play next season 2) how does Alderson pan out, 3) how much does $8M get you on the FA market this winter. One of those three goes against the Giants and it’s a flop deal if Sanchez ends up having a no appreciable impact on this years playoff push.

Oh, I Am Not Saying Freddy Sanchez Is Worth The Price Of Tim Alderson.

But, I am saying he improves the Giants post season chances both this year and especially next year and is worth exercising his $8M team option if an extention is not agreed to.

by giantsrainman on Aug 24, 2009 9:18 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

we also know that Sabean won’t want to admit to a mistake this quickly, (assuming he’s not fired) so he’s not about to let Sanchez walk while Alderson has his whole career in front of him to make Sabean look bad.

I can’t see this comparison. Sanchez is a career .300 hitter and Frandsen is a career utility infielder. Sanchez is a better hitter, a better fielder, a faster runner, and a smarter player. I want Frandsen up here next year as a backup with Uribe released, but I think it would be a huge mistake to let Sanchez walk and go with Frandsen as a starter next year. Anyway, Sabean’s coments about Frandsen recently would indicate this would never happen.

“Oh hey Brian. Before we get to that, I see that you put in a waiver claim on Sheffield. I realize he’s 40 years old, all our players are injured and we’re not really in contention but I just can’t give the guy up.”

“Well, Omar, although I’m disappointed you did that, I can certainly understand you needing to keep as much of a veteran presence as possible for your banged-up ball club. But, back to that list thingy. Is that something I have to sign up for on-line? Does cost anything, and if so can I just trade a minor league player instead of paying cash?”

to be fair, we’ve heard the same things from the Mets that we often see from the Giants’ when they’re out of it. They need to field some name players the rest of the season to at least sell a few tickets. Fans don’t care about things like that, but the team has to.

I woulda done it on Saturday, I think.

Also, if there is ANY doubt about Pablo’s calf, DL him too.

Not to stir up old arguments, but in the 3-year-old post I link to below you defended the Sabean/Giants trend of keeping injured players on the active roster while the team played a man short. I’m just curious: Has your opinion changed at all since then?

Wow, I had totally forgotten that conversation.

In this case, I heard during a game broadcast that Sanchez aggravated that shoulder over the weekend. If that was the case, and I’m not just misremembering, then that’s different from a guy who’s healing slowly. At that point, I really do wonder why they didn’t DL him right away — it’s a different situation, facing a critical series short an important player. Going into Coors Field, where rosters get burned up like nitrate film stock, is a specific case where I would make an exception.

In Pablo’s case, I believe that the season is already over, and he is a vital piece of our offense for the next few years. Let’s baby the guy a little if needed. (According to SF Gate, his calf is already better, so this doesn’t seem to be justified.)

I still say that Sabean should trust his trainer, or get rid of him; I would also point out that Sabean has been far more willing to DL guys with phantom injuries in recent years.

I want to say that another factor is the Giants carrying a larger pitching staff now. I’ve had this impression all season that we carry too many pitchers and too few position players. I could be full of it, though.

Also, with all the health-related crap my friends, family and I have gone through in the last three years, I have a greater instinct to just say “fuck it, make him better, whatever it takes,” and forget the baseball.
