SF Giants 2010 Budget?
Cot's Baseball Contracts has the Giants Opening Day payrolls for 25-man roster (salaries plus pro-rated signing bonuses): 2009: $ 82,616,450. The Giants 2010 budget has yet to be set however FOUR AVERAGE players could command more than fifty percent of the budget.
LHP Barry Zito $18.5M
CF Aaron Rowand $12M
SS Edgardo Renteria $9M
2B Freddy Sanchez $8M (Sabean has said he will pick up 2010 option)
Total: $47.5M
And that is before Super 2 Cy Young award winner RHP Tim Lincecum earns $10M in arbitration.

$30,500,000 coming off the books according to Cot's
This includes Winn, Molina, Johnson, Lowry, Howry, Aurilia and Uribe. I could see Uribe and Howry being resigned though. Does anyone know the players who will get Arbitration raises besides Lincecum?

Wilson Will Have Enough Service Time For Super 2.
You also forgot about Justin Miller who like Brandon Medders is still under Giants control and arb eligable. You are right about Frandsen not having enough service time (he needed to spend all of 2009 at the mlb level) and about Jonathan Sanchez (will have 3+ years of mlb service) joing Llincecum (will be super 2) as 1st time arb eligable starting pitchers.
The full and correct list is:
SPs – Lincecum and Sanchez
RPs – Wilson, Medders, and Miller
1Bs – Garko

that is why they shouldn’t be offered arbitration. if the team wants to re-sign them, they should do so as free agents. If they want to walk, fine, there are always plenty of short relievers available during the offseason.

2010 Payroll
by my quick and dirty number crunching, I figure that the team is obligated in 2010 for about $60.9M* assuming they pick up Sanchez’s option (which as you said, Sabes indicated he would) plus a raise in the minimum salary to $410k (for 8 guys), but not including other nominal raises to guys making a bit more than the minimum in 2009 (e.g. assume Fred Lewis will make $440k in 2010 as he did in 2009).
Assuming the team wants to have an approximately $90M payroll, that leaves about $28.1M for free agents and arbitration raises. Using Rainman’s numbers from above (for simplicity’s sake, I won’t vouch for his prognosticating ability) for Lincecum, Sanchez, Wilson and Garko = $16.5M – though I personally think Tim will get $10 especially if he wins another CY) then the team will have about $12.5M for 2010 free agents. That’s not a lot.
I assume the team will try to purchase as many arb years as possible from these guys, resulting in further budget room for 2010, but add payroll down the line in future years.
Again, those big Rowand and Zito contracts really limit the payroll flexibility of this team.
*I’m relying on Cots for a lot of this, but he uses 2 different sets of numbers for Rowand’s contract. I’m going with the even $12m/year set rather than the spreadsheet that escalates in 2010 to $13.6M thru the end of the deal.

We have no shot at Holliday or Bay
The Yanks, BoSox (Bay will test the market), and Angels are all looking for a big name corner OF in the offseason. The Yanks will almost certainly go all out for Bay since it will have the added benefit of stealing him away from their hated rival (like they did with Damon afew years back). That leaves Boston, LAA, and the Cards fighting over Holliday – we can’t, and shouldn’t, compete with that group.

Why would the Yanks try to sign either of them? Given that Andy Pettite probably wont return, Chein-Ming Wang has been hurt and bad, and that Joba Chamberlain is kind of injury prone, I’d think they’d spend big on one of John Lackey or Erik Bedard before they’d spend big on an OF. But given the amount of money coming off the books for us, we definitely could compete with them.

aren’t you aware of this rule among baseball fans that the Yankees are assumed to sign every single player in the league?
by FluLikeSymptoms on Aug 24, 2009 9:41 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yanks want a stud corner OF
The Yanks have been planning to go after a stud corner OF in the FA market ever since this season began. Right now they have Eric Hinske and Jerry Hairston playing significant time in the OF. Here’s why they will go after Bay:
1. It hurts their #1 rival, the BoSox, by stealing one of the biggest hitters.
2. It allows them to let Matsui go in FA, offer Johnny Damon a much-reduced salary, and give much-needed rest from catching to Jorge Posada. Matsui is so old and slow on D that he hasn’t played an inning in the OF this year, and handcuffs the Yanks by eating up all the innings at DH. With Matsui gone, Johnny Damon (at about a 60% pay cut if he wants to stay badly enough) and Posada share the DH, when they’re not starting in the field. This also allows them to give guys like Tex, ARod, Jeter, and Swisher days off in the season while still keeping their bats in the lineup.
3. They have $38M coming off the books between Matsui, Damon, Nady, Molina, Hinske, and Hairston. They will have to pony up $13M more in salary bumps to C.C., Jeter, and Cano, and about $8M if they re-sign Damon. They should also get back about $1M from Wang in arb (he made $5M last year and 80% of that is $4M). That leaves them with $18M to play with if they don’t raise their payroll at all, but I’m sure they’ll raise it for a chance at Bay or Holliday.
4. As for pitching, I think they’ll go after mid-level FA like Randy Wolf, Doug Davis, Jason Marquis, and Rich Harden – who shouldn’t cost more than $9M per year. Although I do see them taking a chance of big money to Brandon Webb if the Dbacks don’t pick up his option and he becomes a FA in Nov.

Really?
Did they check with you to make sure it was a good idea? Seriously, though, you don’t just chuck 70-80 million at Jason Bay because it hurts your division rival. That’s a long term commitment for a position player they really don’t need. There are plenty of better uses for their money. And even if they did use that strategy, the Red Sox could simply sign Holliday for close to the same amount. That would actually be a bit of an upgrade for the Sox.
And I know they have a lot of money coming off the books, but given that their payroll is already astronomically high even with the money they’ll free up, I’m doubting they’re going to try to be big spenders this year, too. Especially when their offense is already the best in the league. And signing a Doug Davis or Randy Wolf would solidify, but not dramatically improve their rotation. They’ll need to do better than that to keep up with the Rays and Red Sox. I’d bet they at least make a push for Lackey.
The very bad man traded my son...So now I'd like you all to meet my new son, Ryan "Aaron" Garko...Dammit it's just not the same!
by boonitez on Aug 25, 2009 5:40 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
We’ll see. Just remember that they can dick around until the last minute and then swoop in and steal Bay away from the Sox, like they did with Tex last year. If Holliday is already signed then the Sox will be out of luck. And if you don’t think that the Yanks and Sox play these exact games in their front offices, I’ll remind you of a few years back when Damon was the quintessential BoSox. All the fans loved him and he was one of the big WS heroes. Everybody thought he would be an easy re-sign for them, but the Yanks came in and snatched him up. You know that the agents for Bay and Holliday are going to play the Yanks and Sox off against each other for all they’re worth.
As for your prediction about Petite, you got that wrong. He’s already beeen quoted in 2 different articles as saying he wants to come back next year, and the money is not his main consideration. They also have the very tempting option of picking up a good setup man for Rivera in the FA market for much less than a starter, and moving Phil Hughes back into the rotation. That would give them a rotation of CC, Burnett, Petite, Chamberlin, and Hughes/Wang. I think they’d take that in a second, since it would allow them to concentrate on bolstering their pen for much less money than a top-tier starter.
The numbers $70-80M wouldn’t be what the Yanks would focus on. It would be the amount per year that counts. Let’s guess 5 year at $15M per, for a total of $75M. As I showed above, they’ll have about $18M to play with in the offseason – and that’s if they don’t want to raise the budget at all. Then, after the 2010 season they have more than $40M coming off the books, and young cheap prospects ready to come up from the minors, so they can easily afford to backload the contract to free up even more money for 2010.
"There ain’t much to being a ballplayer, if you’re a ballplayer." - Honus Wagner
by Fla-Giant on Aug 25, 2009 6:11 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
That rotation isn’t a very good bet to hold up. Pettite, if he does come back, is getting old. Chamberlain has never pitched a full season and has already proven not to be very durable. Wang is coming off an injury. Phil Hughes isn’t a guarantee either. I wasn’t denying that the Yankees sometimes try and steal players from the Sox, but when they do it it usually makes sense for the team. In this situation it just doesn’t. They need another established starter, and it also wouldn’t hurt for them to add some relief help. Their offense even with the departure of Damon and Matsui (one of whom will probably return) would still feature Arod, Tex, Cano, Jeter, Swisher, and Posada. Their offense doesn’t need work. Their pitching kinda does.

Yeah. But his last two seasons have been such a parade of injuries that even Sabean may be leery.

Didn’t the Pirates try to do something akin to that with his contract before they traded him? He didn’t seem open to it with them…
Though maybe he just wanted out of Pitt.

Shouldn't The Higher Yearly Average Salary Be In Shorter Contract?
I would guess more like 2 years $13M or 3 years $17M.

I wonder if the Giants will go after a big time hitter like Holliday or Bay, if its a lower rung power hitter like Dye I would be very upset!
Congrats to my soul mate and birth brother Zach Wheeler on being drafted into greatness. Should I just buy my Wheeler jersey now, or wait till my next birthday?

by giantsrainman on Aug 24, 2009 8:01 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I'd take that bet
I believe that Bay will test the market, and when he does the Yanks will come after him with all they’ve got and steal him away from Boston (just like with Teixera). Holliday will also test the market – his agent is Scott Boras after all. That will leave Boston, the Cards, and the Angels fighting over Holliday. I predict that he ends up in Boston – they won’t allow another offseason playing 2nd fiddle to the Yanks.

Sox fans love Bay. They’d shit if they let him get away
by microwave donut on Aug 25, 2009 11:17 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
If Bay chooses FA, like I’m sure he will at this late date, the decision won’t be in the the Sox’s hands. Besides, if it leads to the Sox landing Holliday instead, then I don’t think the fans will be that upset. I do agree that if the Sox don’t get one or the other, and miss the playoffs this year, then “The Nation” will be chewing on Epstein until the beginning of next season.

Brian Wilson
here are contracts that a couple of relatively comparable closers got in their first arbitration year.
Huston Street: $3.3 million in 2008
Brian Fuentes: $2 million in 2006
Jonathan Papelbon: $6.25 million in 2009 which was the largest contract ever for a first time arbitration eligible closer
Jose Valverde: $2 million in 2007
Jonathan Broxton: $1.8 million plus incentives in 2009
Bobby Jenks: $5.6 million in 2009, which was a record for a first time arb eligible closer until Papelbon signed
none of these are perfect comparisons obviously, but it seems to me like he should fall in somewhere between Valverde and Huston Street

Unless the Giants sign Holliday or Bay. they’ll once again be without a legit #4 hitter right?

My Bucardo is better than yours.

Not Bengie Molina. Someone who can protect and support Pablo in that lineup. I don’t care who it is, just as long as they can drive runs in and get on base! =D

The good news is they should be able to package young pitchers like Alderson or Scott Barnes to acquire a young power hitter.
Oh.

Jason Bay scares me. His bat is good, not great, for a corner outfielder. Any slippage with the bat and he becomes a total albatross because he’s one of the worst outfielders in baseball.
3/30? Sure.
5/70? No.

Agreed. I’d rather spend the money on a solution for 1B. Or SS. Or even another starting pitcher.

Don't worry
We have absolutely no chance of getting him with Boston, NY, and Anaheim (LAA) in the market.

Ironically enough, Zito’s contract, and to a lesser extent Rowand’s and Renteria’s, are the reasons we have no chance of competing with the Yanks and Boston at getting Bay. There’s no way that Bay will accept lesser $$ to play what would in all liklihood amount to his last real stop in the MLB.
I think that Neukom adds a measure of sanity in Sabes flights of fancy, as last offseason illustrated – we never made a bid for C.C., Tex, or ManRam even though I’m sure Sabes was chomping at the bit to get in on at least one of those deals.

I don’t think money is really an obstacle if they want to compete for the top free agents. If they want a player badly enough, as with Zito, they can backload the hell out of the contract and deal with the problems later.
