OT: What's In Your Beer Fridge?
I love beer. I also love to talk about beer. I know that McC has some beer drinkers and I thought it would be fun to start a thread on beers that people are into right now, or have been into in the past. What are you drinking? What kind of beer do you like? Do you like your beer so hoppy that it feels like you're chewing hops? Or do you like the darker, and sweeter, stuff? Belgians, IPAs, Stouts, I love 'em all.
So, I ask the ale swilling denizens of McC, -- what're you drinking?
A peek into my current rotation:
From L/R:
Bell's Two Hearted Ale - One of my favorite IPA styled beers. Really great hop finish to this one. Good balance and for a 7% beer, it's really drinkable. Bell's is probably one of my favorite brewery's right now.
North Coast Brewing's Old Rasputin (Russian Imperial Stout) - I really like dark beers and this one is no exception. It pours a deep black and is full of my favorite tasting notes for imperial stouts -- coffee, chocolate it's all here. Not so much a summer beer, but then again I really like Imperial Stouts. At around 10% per 12 oz this beer packs a punch.
Piraat's Belgian Ale - Some people love Belgians. I'm still learning to appreciate them. I've drank a good bit of Chimay in my life, and I've enjoyed it, but I'm still warming up to Belgian Ales. I may have found a new favorite. I really enjoyed this ale.
Sierra Nevada's Southern Hemisphere 2009 Harvest Ale - I'm a big fan of SN but I haven't tried this one yet. I've had their 2008 Wet Hop Ale and it was fantastic, if this one is half as good I'm in for a treat.
Sam Smith's Imperial Stout - You can't go wrong with SS. They make damn good beer, this Imperial Stout is no different.
Sam Smith's Organic Cider - I haven't tried this one yet. I'm not huge on cider but SS will probably do a good job with it.
Sam Smith's Oatmeal Stout - One of my favorite beers from SS.
I'm always up for suggestions on new beers. I tend to like most any style. I'm partial to dark beers and anything with a good bit of hops in it. I'm not big on lagers but Sam Smith's organic lager stuff is really solid for the style.
OK, share.

All I have right now is one bottle of Guinness and some Sierra Nevada Summerfest Lager in the garage. Owch.

Guinness is awesome but I’m not that pleased with how it tastes out of a bottle (compared to on tap.)
btw, if you asked me what wine I’ve got access to at the moment, I could go on a lot longer. ;)

I have some as well in my fridge—-I’m not a huge fan, my girlfriend is the one who bought it/drinks it.

I thought it was fine, but I’m not as much of a discerning beer drinker as I am with wine.

It isn’t bad, it just isn’t much better than your standard bland lager, but with the Sierra Nevada cost.
Merkin Valdez? Manuel Mateo? A rose by any other name...
I got a big thing of it at Costco so the price wasn’t too bad. I do agree that it wasn’t really good enough that I’d go out and choose to buy it again though.
I’m hoping to get some recs from this thread, anyway!

Anything Samuel Smith is definitely good.
I am also generally not into lagers, but lately I have been drinking a lot of Brooklyn Lager, which manages to be pretty hoppy and flavorful. I haven’t done much craft beer tasting other than that lately—-I hope to do more once the minor league season gives me my nights and weekends back.
Merkin Valdez? Manuel Mateo? A rose by any other name...
Brooklyn makes good stuff. They do make a good lager, though. I always drink their Black Chocolate Stout in the winter time.
I just find most lagers, I don’t know, boring? Maybe I’m not drinking the right ones.
I wanted to buy that Black Chocolate Stout once but it was ridiculously expensive.

I think it runs around $10-11 for a 6-pack here. I find that beer is priced more expensively here than other places. It’s worth it!
Well, we were in a grocery store in lower Manhattan, so… lol. My friend was not into the idea.

Have you tried the Bell’s Expedition Stout? It’s a must have if you like kick-your-ass Imperials, though it is quite pricey when I’ve seen it available.

I haven’t. I’ll be on the look for it. I find that they make great beer. The Cherry Stout they make is kinda weird.
Funny story: I tried that stuff back in January, thought it was weird and meh, and later that night I got really bad food poisoning.
It’s unlikely that the beer caused it, but I wince and shudder whenever I think of that taste, by association.
Merkin Valdez? Manuel Mateo? A rose by any other name...
haha. I give them credit, it does taste like a cherry stout. I’m just not so sure that’s a good combination to begin with. I had a Blueberry Stout a few months ago that worked well.
Also, when you come by, you must not leave Ohio without Great Lakes.

I LOVE their Edmund Fitzgerald Porter. It’s funny but I can find Great Lakes beer back in WV when I see my parents. I can’t find it here in VA, though. I also like their Burning River. I haven’t had any of the other beers they make besides those two. The porter is awesome.
Heh. Edmund Fitzgerald is my single favorite beer of all time. There might be slightly better, more expensive beers, but EF’s ratio of cost-to-amazingness blows away everything else in my eyes.

It’s 50/50 for beer. We did get a nice little beer shop in the past year, so it’s been better. But, when I go up to Maryland to visit my buddy, his beer stores rock the ones we get here.
To add: I mostly find that things here are $1-3 more expensive as compared to other places I’ve found beer.
Xanthan, if you make it to Charlottesville, look for Beer Run off the Downtown Mall. It’s a GREAT little shop run by some college friends of mine. They have an extremely impressive selection of beer from all across the US and world. It’s a great place to discover new brews. The staff is really knowledgeable too.
I was in Charlottesville this past weekend, actually. How are their prices? I’ll give them a look-see the next time I’m in the area.
Typical of the area
Can be a little pricey, but not outrageously so.
They also have a TON of events going on all the time. The tastings are well worth the trip.
They have a restaurant as well that serves great food, and a constantly changing draft scene (from Starr Hill to Lagunitas right now).
sam's wines and liquid solutions (google them)

Love the Bell’s Two Hearted Ale. That’s a fave of mine. Just bought a stash for hosting my fantasy football league and it was all various Sam Adams and Dog Fish (which is what I almost always buy for myself these days — or better yet, head over to the Dog Fish Bar and Grill where they sell the stuff that they can’t legally bottle.

Can I come to your fantasy football league? That’s a damn nice selection of beer for a party.
Also, on a side note, you’ll be glad to know that if you’re ever in Hagerstown, MD to watch the Giants minor league teams, Hagerstown just got a Hard Times. I was up there last weekend but didn’t stop by because I ran out of time.
Was that your first opportunity to get to one? Did you go see the Augusta series last week?

Yueng Ling
Visited Pittsburgh last week (blech) for a college friend’s wedding (yeah!). Had a few Yueng Ling at the rehearsal dinner, at the wedding, and again at Monday’s game at PNC Park. Bought a six pack, and it resides in the fridge with a few leftover Sam Adams Summer Ale.

Yeungling is probably the best cheap beer you can ever buy. I grew up on that beer in college and still drink it.
I agree, it’s much better than anything I’ve had for that price. I’ve got a six pack of Yuengling in my fridge now. I think I’ve also got some Pilsner Urquell left too, that I bought on sale. Normally I like more flavorful ales, but I’ve had trouble finding reasonably priced ones here in DC.

I have Sam Adam’s Oktoberfest in my fridge now, but usually I am also stocked with some Newcastle and every now and then Guiness. Newcastle is my absolute favorite beer and I also really enjoy the dark, frothy stouts. I’ve had the Chocolate Stout from tap before too (at Yard House) and mixing that with some vanilla ice cream is quite tasty. There are some other obscure stouts you can get at liquor stores, and I find those just as interesting.
I am currently buying up all the Trader Joe’s brand Dunkelweizen I can find. I am a big fan of the Gordon Biersch Dunkelweizen, but they only sell it in bottles for 1-2 months a year and its not carried in most grocery stores. Was in Trader Joe’s one day and sure enough, they had their own brand which just so happened to be bottled in San Jose, CA. Got online and found its actually GB in disguise (so is the Trader Joes Hef if you like it.) So thats my dumb luck finding a beer I really like for $3 less per 6-pack than I have been paying for years. Give it a shot if you like dark wheats
Good to know! I might have to go buy some.

Beers I drink a lot:

-
- New Castle. Solid all-round beer. Fat Tire or Sam Adams. Often on sale here in New Mexico.

- Anchor Steam, when I find it on sale. Easy to drink, tasty. Various local beers.

I love the New Belgium Ales – especially Mothership Wit and Trippel. In fact, I daren’t buy more than a six-pack of either at a time because I know I will just keep drinking the stuff ‘til it’s gone if it’s there!
We are really lucky round here to be able to get such a wide selection of really good bottled beers – I picked up a 12 pack of Lagunitas IPA for $10.99 on Friday. I wasn’t surprised to learn that the Trader Joe’s brand beers were made by Gordon Biersch – they are consistently of very good quality at an extremely good price! I’ll have to pick up some of the Dunkelweissen next time I go shopping – not tried that one yet.
I picked up a six pack of 21st Amendment’s “Brew Free or Die” from BevMo a few weeks ago, and was impressed with it! Will have to visit them next time I get to the city!
Regarding Sam Smith’s – the bottled stuff is fine, but it’s really not a patch on the draught stuff! If you are ever in London, print this out, or import it to your GPS or whatever – http://www.jamesgretton.co.uk/samuelsmiths
I’ve been to about 10 of these and they are all really great pubs with great beer, particularly the Lyceum on the Strand and Ye Olde Swiss Cottage in Swiss Cottage.
A very good friend of mine started a Brewery in Surrey about 7 or 8 years ago, shortly after I emigrated, and has had amazing success – this year his Ranmore Ale won Gold at the Great British Beer Festival! It’s still not easy to get hold of (and he currently has no plans to bottle the stuff, sadly), but he helpfully lists all the pubs that are serving it on his website:
http://www.surreyhills.co.uk/
So, if you ever find yourself in the South East of England, give it a go!
I used to be disgusted, but now I try to be amused

Dos Equis bought by girlfriend.
Beers I´ve really liked recently:
Ruination Ale by Stone Brewery in SD
Racer 5
Pliny the Elder
Agree with the Bell’s Brewery Two Hearted Ale, I went to a wedding in Kalamazoo, visited the brewery, loved the beer, and then found out couldn’t buy it in CA. But was an awesome beer
Of the more “mainstream” bears, I am a huge fan of Magic Hat. Particularly #9 and their Hefeweizen, Circus Boy. They also have really solid seasonals, hIPA being my favorite. Other than that, I will always go for Guinness if it’s on draft (NEVER from the bottle, bleh) or Lagunitas, which can be hard to find on the East Coast. On rare occasions, I’ll go for a Corona, but that’s usually for BBQs when flavor isn’t as important.
After years of getting whatever I could at college (often Natty, PBR, and the like), I turned to craft/local breweries as soon as I left. The one where I live, Starr Hill, is amazing. They put out a great selection of small batch brews that keep me coming back for more. I’ll try anything if I am touring a local brewery (one of my favorite things to do) but I definitely have preferences. I have noticed that as I have tried more beers, my tastes have changed, and now I prefer to have stronger tasting ones. I like a bitter beer, but I don’t mind a refreshing ale, especially when the weather is warm.
Star Hill is pretty decent. I like their Jomo, Dark Star, and Hef. They make a decent IPA and Amer Ale, too.
Yeah, Jomo is pretty good, def the Star Hill preference of townies around here. Dark Star is my favorite of their offerings, but I like the IPA as well. It was pretty hoppy this year, and I approved. Are there any good local breweries you would recommend in the Valley?
We have Cally’s here in town.

It’s my new favorite beer. $10 for a four-pack though. It tastes like Boddingtons had a baby with Newcastle.
Please hit better, Randy Winn.
will be trying it
I have heard nothing but good things about it.
Good call on the Boddingtons/Newcastle blend
I had it for the first time at Bloodhound a couple weeks ago because it was the only thing on tap that I had never tried before. It was a little thicker than I was expecting, but very good.
Adopted brother of Jason Jarvis.
There’s a few Dos Equis in the back, and a couple Tecates fro the “Mexican Beers” box we bought at Costco. There’s also a few Modelo cans mixed in, at least one Smirnoff Ice that’s been in there since my mother last visited, and probably some left over Miller’s from a trip to the beach about a week ago. I don’t drink much beer, so it tends to linger.
On top of the fridge in the liquor cabinet is usually where I head first.
The wine cooler is almost empty, but I have a few nice bottles saved.
Negra Modelo is good beer. I wish they didn’t use that dumb foil though. It’s a pain to get away from the opening, and I always worry that it’s made of lead…
This Summer
I tried a few different things. My favorite would probably be Belhaven’s Wee Heavy, from Scotland. I don’t know exactly what it was about that beer, but I LOVED it. I also sprang for a bottle of Deschutes Black Butte XXI, which was quite an experience. Also really enjoyed Celebrator Doppelbock, Trumer Pils, Dogfish Head Midas Touch (delicious), and Pliny the Elder. Lagunitas IPA is my go-to IPA.
Alright, fine, I admit it! "Hydration Technician" really DOES just mean "water boy!"
I just relocated from the west coast to New England and am trying to scope out what’s good up here. So far I’ve tried Geary’s, Long Trail, Chamberlain’s, Allagash and Shipyard. I’m a little partial to the Geary’s Summer Ale. Anyone have any NE favorites? Also, I miss being able to buy Dead Guy Ale.

Classic & More Recent Faves
I started drinking beer when I was in Germany during my Army days, and it pretty much ruined me for the old American standards like Budweiser, Miller, etc (although if no other options are around, I can handle MGD). Stuff I loved over there:
Parkbrau Pirminator
Bitburger Pils
Any Berliner Weisse (wheat beer with raspberry syrup added)
Flensburger Pils
Franziskaner Hefeweizen
Hacker Pschorr
Current Faves:
Unibroue L’Fin Du Monde
Moylan’s Kilt Lifter (and their Stout)
Rock Bottom’s Cask Vanilla Cream Stout (the Campbell location)
Blue Moon’s Winter Brew (waiting impatiently for its return)
Gulden Draak (Belgium)
Hacker Pschorr Weizen
I highly recommend taking a drive up to Novato to visit the Moylan’s brewery; it’s like BJ’s but you know, really good (BJ’s is fine, but Moylan’s kicks their ass). If you can handle more than one of their Barleywine Ale, I salute you! http://www.moylans.com/site/pages/brewery/beer.php

i love real german hefeweizens. i really don’t like when hefe’s have that banana taste to them. i’ll take franziskaner or paulaner drank through an oil filter over widmer or pyramid on tap any day.
had the golden draak a few weeks ago, enjoyed it immensely.
and i rememember blue moon’s winter ale being really good last year. also, annheiser-busch (who knew) makes a cask bourbon ale that i really enjoyed last winter. i’m not really a dark beer guy but i remember that beer really blowing my socks off.

i’m low on beer right now. and my girlfriend made the last beer run, so i’m pretending i really like stella and white lightning (by speakeasy… actually an alright white ale, i guess, just something about it doesn’t drive me crazy.). those and two GB marzen lagers. i’m not a lager guy but when they’ve got some flavor two them (GB, sam adams) they’ll do quite well, thank you very much.
i’m a big fan of belgian beers… i try to stay diverse, but really dark beers kind of turn me off after about half a bottle. i love a good, spicy white ale (i tried hoegaarden in spain a couple years ago, and it got me interested in
i’ll rattle off a couple beers that i didn’t see mentioned yet:
alaskan summer ale (it’s a german kolsch-style, very light and refreshing, for a non-SF summer day)
Annheiser Busch’s winter bourbon cask ale (the one with the snow man on it… i thought it was a really flavorful semi-dark winter beer… i was surprised.. if you don’t like whiskey and hate vanilla this one might not be your thing)
Hoegaarden Grand Cru I had one of these in Belgium, and I haven’t seen it since. My favorite beer, ever. Kinda like a spicier, double white.
anyone know a good pumpkin-spice beer i can find in the bay area? i’ve never had one, but my GF hasn’t shut up about one she had last halloween, and it’d make her season.
