Interesting. Can't say I wouldn't like a bat like his in the lineup, but as he proved today, he is a jackass sometimes

Was just gonna post this.

Interesting indeed. Dont know what to think. He’s a Dodger..

Id rather see Velez Rowand, Nate play against lefties then Velez Rowand and old man Sheffield.

That OPS is pretty damn nice though, would be second on the team to Panda. I really thought Shef was done before this season, but his bat speed looked good still

Yeah, but

Sheffield hates the Dodgers after the way he was treated; the Giants would have been interesting, but apparently, he’d rather play on the East Coast and not be the ‘focal point’ of press coverage. Too bad, because he must not know how laid back it is up here.

Unless he took AB’s away from Rowand and Winn, and Nate got to play everyday. But I know that wont happen, so pass.

They may have claimed him to block LA? or Colorado?

Sheffield is garbage, we don’t need selfish has beens in the locker room. We already have a massive log jam in OF anyway. I wouldn’t want him on the Giants.

Sabean had said that the team had been making claims off of waivers to block other teams. This could well have been one of them.

Well he does lead the Mets in home runs… (I know, sad for the Mets!) I’m glad what was probably a block move didn’t result in him on the Gigantes. Reports are that he asked the Mets for a contract extension, they said no and now he’s threatening to go home. Jackass.

I don’t think he’s being a jackass at all. For once in his career, he’s right. If you pull someone back from waivers it means you want to keep him. And if you show the player you want to keep him, you can’t now tell him you have no plans for him for next year when he asks for a new contract. Then they release Livan Hernandez and tell him they are doing so to give him a chance to hook on with a contender. Why does Livan get this opportunity and not Sheffield?

I’m sorry, if you ask for an extension, am told no and then say that you’re going to just take your marbles and go home… that’s a jackass. The Mets are under no obligation to trade, release or extend Sheffield, but he’s obligated under his contract to make himself available to play.

Mets look like jerks - but no surprise where Minaya is concerned

You’re right that the Mets are under no obligation to trade, release or extend him, but why would they want to keep him? The Mets are really screwing Sheff for no apparent reason.

The Mets aren’t even within sniffing distance of the playoffs, they have no plans on re-signing him after the season, and by all reports Sheff has been a good guy on the field and in the clubhouse this year for them. Why not give one of their AAA outfielders a chance to play in the majors for 2 months? They must have a Scotty McClain-type career minor leaguer in their system that they could call up as a feel-good story.

Sheff is 40 years old, why did the Mets keep him away from a contender and what may be his last chance ever to play for a title? Not to mention the fact that they would have saved almost $4M in salary if they had just dumped him on us. That would have been a nice chunk of change for them to drop on one of the guys that they couldn’t sign in the draft last week.

Some may say that they want to keep him for compensation when he walks as a FA in the offseason. However, there’s no way they were going to get any comp for him, because:
1. He’s not even a type B at this point, according to Elias.
2. Even if he was a type B, there’s no way they would offer him arb since they would be stuck owing him at least $11.2M if Sheff accepted the arb.

One more thing

Don’t claim that the Mets didn’t want to trade him to a rival. The Giants aren’t in their division, the Mets aren’t contending this year, and Sheff is not the long-term piece of the puzzle that would make the Giants contenders for the NL crown for years to come. There’s no way Sheff would even still be on the Giants next year.

Why do the Mets care about this? That’s his agents concern, not Omar’s. The Mets worry about the Mets, not whether Gary needs another ring. Sheff leads the Mets in HRs and w/ Wright out, is their most recognizable position player. What’s worth more to a team in the first year of a new stadium, playing a AAAA scrub or playing Sheffield, some one even a casual fan would recognize? Sounds like he’s worth more to them as their only offensive threat and draw than any minor money savings. (Isn’t Det. on the hook for that $4mil and the Mets the minimum salary?)

Correct. Mets only paid $400k or so if he stays the whole year. Tigers paying the other $13+ million

can he still play shortstop?

Attitude aside, he might have been an ok fit. His defense sucks, but to use him off the bench and against lefties, he might have had some value. I don’t feel bad about not getting him, though.

Merkin Valdez? Manuel Mateo? A rose by any other name...

I just realized, though. If the Mets end up releasing him, that makes it pretty likely that we would sign him. Meaning there is a pretty good chance that we will end up with him, like it or not.
