That is not a good way for Freddy Sanchez to make a first impression. Stupid play on his part. You need to eat that ball if you aren’t going to be able to make a reasonable throw to first base. The Giants can never afford to give runs away.

You are correct. But no one ever calls the balk with the bases empty. I’ve never seen it in a ML game.

but i remember just perusing the rules quickly awhile back and seeing a section that essentially seemed ignored.
like the “bases empty balk=automatic ball” and the “quick pitch” rules as well.
The best I’ve ever seen was at a Stanford game where the Stanford first basemen kept lining up in foul ground. He balked a runner in from first on three straight pitches.

Only the catcher is allowed to line up in foul ground. I have no idea why the first baseman was doing so.

IIRC no players on defense can align outside of fair territory when the pitcher delivers. i think the catcher’s box was a consequence of this—hence why they have to be within (supposed to be) when the pitch is delivered.
I just fail to see why someone would do that, there’s no advantage to it and it’s tough to do by accident.

IIRC, every balk can be called in any situation, but the umps really don’t care if the bases are empty. I saw it called a lot in high school, though.

I was reading somewhere – I can’t remember where – that Sandoval probably would’ve made top prospects lists before last season, but didn’t mainly because Giants management was down on him.

Giants definitely do not suck...
the only reason I get upset is because I think we can be so much more. With our market size, cheap young pitching, we should just be a lot better, and there is no excuse.
We have 75 million dollars of payroll this year tied to Zito, Molina, Dave Roberts, Renteria, F Sanchez, Winn, Rowand, Johnson, Howry, and Aurilia.
Now, there are some decent players in that haul, but collectively, that’s probably what, 8-10 wins above replacement and one Red Sox broadcaster?
To me, that is just absolutely unacceptable. We thrive because of 3 players (Lincecum, Cain, and Pablo). Giants brass does deserve credit for those 3, but to me that credit does not go on Sabean, the guy allocating the money. It’s John Barr and his scouts. Yes, Sabes put them in place, so credit is deserved, but when you blow money like he has, it negates the gains your player dev staff has made.
I’d keep most of the structure in place, but the guy with his figner on the trigger has to go.
I definitely wish they would try something new at the top. Sabean has improved a bit since the really bad years but it’s still a really tired act.

If you compare the price for Garko to the price the Indians were asking for V. Martinez (who would play first for us), we kind of got a bargain.

I mean the market price for Garko is fair. Barnes for Garko is fair value, not knocking that.
My whole shpiel (sp?) about the Garko price is that the only value he really brought to us is as a platoon player.
If Lance Niekro was still at 1B, I think we made a great trade. What happened here is we got (IMO) the equivalent of trading for a platoon bat, only this guy can play everyday.
I just think Jeff Bailey/Ishikawa w/ barnes in tow is probably the same as Ryan Garko

For this Front Office, it’s a fine move, but I just think once you start “handicapping” your front office there is a serious problem. They should be far more creative than any of us.
I guess. I do think relying on a 30+ y/o career minor leaguer is a risky move, both PR-wise and baseball-wise.

perhaps, but I prefer a FO (maybe that’s just me personally) that can be creative in those elements. I do think it’s reasonable to expect him to be a productive platoon player and if it works, you not only save Barnes but millions that Garko will make over the next 3 years.
Either way, that’s a not a move that really irks me. Garko is a proven bat and we didn’t exactly pay and arm and a leg for him.
On the scale of bad Sabes moves, it’s not really on the radar.
