So you’re saying we’re going to win the World Series on a walk-off?

STEVE HOLM! refuses to be the odd man out.

I had no recollection of Mr. C being so productive that year. I guess my concerns were more with the pitching back then, so I really didn’t notice him. If Garko could produce close to that line, I would be pleased.

I was talking to the mrs. last night before the game and told her if Garko doesn’t start hitting I was going to start calling him Shea Hillenbrand for the rest of the season. For his sake he got two mistake pitches that he didn’t miss last night. I’m still not convinced.

Part of me wishes we were not contending, so we could see what Ishi would do with regular playing time for a full season as well as Grate and Bowker. But then I realize how stupid that idea of wishing to not contend is and I want to try to do this.

Depends...

Who’s doing the rating, and what exactly is being rated.

As a Giant only, I’d say he’s a lot more underrated than overrated.

In 1998, the Giants were desperate for a right fielder and another productive bat in the lineup. So a lot of Giants fans went ballistic when Sabean dealt the immortal Darrin Blood for Carter. Given that Sabean dealt for Ellis Burks eight days later, I’m not sure if Sabean’s original plan was just to use Carter as his everyday right fielder, and then Burks fell into his lap. Or if dealing for Carter was just a precursor to getting Burks (putting him in less of a position of perceived weakness when going after Burks), and a fallback if the deal for Burks couldn’t get done. Either way, whether by design or just dumb luck, Sabean did himself proud and nearly got the Giants into the postseason in ’98 with those two trades.

Why couldn't McCovey have hit the ball just three feet higher??

by say hey nation on Aug 19, 2009 10:15 AM PDT up reply actions

I agree. I think some guys just don’t have the stomach to handle the pressure in “clutch” situations. BTW, Jason Bay has a good quote in there too. I have no idea to put it in a little grey box, so here is goes:

“It’s not so much a matter of raising your level in a clutch situation. It’s a matter of keeping your level the same,” Bay said. “Baseball is predicated on the idea that the people who are the most successful are the ones who do things the same way most consistently. It’s not an emotion game like football or hockey, where you can go bust some skulls.”

by m34josh on Aug 19, 2009 12:00 PM PDT up reply actions

“predicated” ??

There’s four whole syllables in that there word, I’m impressed.
I’m more used to thinking of athletes speaking abilities being expressed in Chulk-speak.

by Merope on Aug 19, 2009 1:10 PM PDT up reply actions

The strongest anti-clutch argument on the Pirates’ roster can be made by Freddy Sanchez.

He won the National League batting title with a .344 average last summer, and his .386 mark with runners in scoring position was the team’s highest. Only Pujols’ .397 mark was higher in the league.

Seems plenty clutch.

Not the case at all, he maintains.

“To me, it’s pretty simple,” Sanchez said. “If you’re hot going into that clutch situation, you have a good chance. You’re already feeling good. Obviously, there are times when a hitter can tense up, and there are some better mentally prepared than others. All I can say is that, for me, when I go up to the plate, it’s not about the men on base. It’s about how I’m feeling.”

He rolled his eyes, remembering those four consecutive strikeouts in a game last week in Milwaukee.

“Trust me: If I’m feeling lousy at the plate like that, I’m not just going to walk up there with bases loaded and get a hit because I’m some great clutch hitter.”

Freddy Sanchez: FJM’s new favorite non-Red Sox. (I can’t resist pointing out here that he used to be. Hometown pride.)

I like Freddy Sanchez
