Pro Quality. Fan Perspective.
Around SBN: New media and the Loss of Sportsmanship

I was hoping to get the opinion of PS3 owners. My wife just got me a Blu-Ray player for my birthday for about $250. With the news of the new PS3 price cut, along with the Mini-me PS3, do you think it would be worth it to return the BR player and trade it in for a PS3 for the extra $50, even if I'm not certain how much I'll be playing it?

It seems like a good idea to me, but I get nervous when I hear stories about lack of sales, the system losing exclusives, and developers complaining about the difficulty of developing for the ps3. Should I be concerned about the quality/amount of games in the long-run? I also wonder if I should be concerned about the durability of the slim PS3.

I got my PS3 for 99% movies/1% gaming and couldn’t be happier. Great picture and sound and it boots up quick. Its also nice because its basically a pc inside so it is easily updateable as blu ray features continue to evolve. If you connect it to the web, it will prompt you every so often for updates.

The only downside is that you have to buy a real remote seperately. Using the controller for movies gets old real fast. I got a bluetooth remote for less than $20 though so its not a huge deal. (and its bluetooth so you don’t really have to point it anywhere near the ps3. Very handy)

The system is and will be fine

Do it. You might want to avoid the slim, 1st gen and all that.

YES, do it!

I got my PS3 almost exclusively for Blu-Ray playing, though mine did come with Lego Indiana Jones (sweeeet). PS3 is known for having one of the best Blu-Ray players on the market. Plus it’s sleek and sexy. Also, it runs EXTREMELY quietly, which is great for the movies. IMO, it’s definitely worth a $50 upgrade to get a great package (with a ton of options).

I love my PS3. I don’t have the slim version, so I can’t speak to it’s durability, but unless there’s something on the XBOX platform that you absolutely have to have or you’re a really, really, really hardcore gamer looking to spend lots of time playing games, there’s plenty of options to keep you entertained. But really, I’ve become a big fan of the system as a media center on the whole— it’s so convenient to rent/download movies (though the selection isn’t huge… yet) and it’s great as a DVD player. And personally, I’ve never had a problem using the controller for a remote, but I guess that’s a matter of personal preference.

I borrowed my brother’s PS3 over the summer. It was kept in a TV unit, and when I played a movie, it would get really, really hot and make a bunch of noise. This would continue even if I opened the door to the TV unit, so I eventually had to physically take it out of the unit and set it on the ground to play movies. Does this sound normal? It’s kind of a pain in the butt to have to do that every time.

i had mine in some of the ikea shelves (you know, the square ones?) and it was fine… never had a problem with overheating, personally.

I just got mine, but my brother has had one for over 2 years now and he says he’s never had a problem (and he is a pretty avid gamer). I am sure the PS3 is just like any other well-made product out there and has a few bad units, but it has a pretty stellar mechanical reputation. My XBox 360, on the other hand, has gone all red 2 times in the 2 years I’ve had it.

Did you try the towel trick on your Xbox? I had the same problem, toweled it and it worked for about 30 more HRs. Then it RROD’d again, I toweled it again, and I haven’t had any problems with it in over 100 hours.

I want one but will probably use it primarily as a Blu-Ray player.

I’d definitely do it, as I’ve been more than pleased with my PS3. It has lost plenty of exclusives but I still think it has by far the best game library, and also, it doesn’t break or overheat every three seconds (My roommate had to set up 2 fans by his 360 console while we played, or the thing would overheat after 15 minutes).

The PS3 is a great Blu-ray player, a fine DVD player with upscaling, and a great game console. If it’s affordable I highly recommend it. I actually have one here in the US that I got “open box” for $270++ via one of those Amazon third-party offers.

My girlfriend has one and it’s shiny.

She’s pretty pissed about this slim announcement, though. Sexier and cheaper. Mang.

Context, people. More context is good. Less context is bad. If you're willing to be reductive, then you're willing to be wrong.

Thanks for the input

The wife OK’ed the exchange. Now the decision is whether to go slim or original. Brand new technology scares me a bit.

I actually like the cosmetics of the fatty one better. I also assume you will see prices crash on them. My buddy got one for under $250 shipped from NewEgg recently and I bet they will drop even lower

by m34josh on Aug 19, 2009 12:23 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Maybe. The Sony rep says they have no plans in the near future to drop it below $299, though.

It would hurt Sony’s business if people thought otherwise.

Yes, but once the slim comes out the older bulkier PS3 will drop in price once they don’t sale. It may take a few months, but it will happen

I may go for this at $200.

Technically, the old PS3 is shinier since the Slim has a matte finish rather than a glossy one.

by Natto on Aug 19, 2009 10:11 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I like shiny, especially the piano black shiny because it matches my TV. And the chrome shiny where you insert the disk is very shiny as well. And besides the plethora of shiny, I like how the eject and power buttons are flush on the fatty one, rather than the cheapo looking regular old circular buttons on the new one. Oh ya, and the abundance of shine rules

I really want one for The Show and FFXIII but I don’t know if that’s enough.

The Show is awesome, awesome, awesome. I play it so much that… well, it’s actually sort of sad how much I play it. But [for me,] it was totally worth buying a PS3 for.

by peetah on Aug 19, 2009 11:56 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

FFXIII will be on the 360 too. So that’s good, assuming you have a 360.
