Russ Ortiz to the Giants? Eh??

Russ Ortiz, after going 2-1 with a 1.59 ERA in 3 starts for AAA Scranton (Yanks), has opted out of his contract and is currently looking at contenders, including San Francisco.

Star-divide

Ortiz clearly struggled in his last few major league appearances this year.  That 9 run, 2.1 IP game against the Cubs was brutal to watch.  His 8 R, 9 H, 5 BB appearance in San Francisco, while much appreciated, was dismal, even with his 7K tally. However, he had several impressive games scattered in this season (and a 20+ inning scoreless streak at one point), and if not for the 2 games leading to his release and subsequent AAA stint, he'd have decent (if not overly impressive) 5th starter numbers.

I'm not saying I'd be crazy to have him back (OK ok, I wouldn't like to have him back), but, for argument's sake, he would provide the Giants with some depth and more options to work with.

What say Ye, McCoven, to welcoming back Ortiz as a 5th starter or long reliever out of the pen?

Rumor link

EDIT: Any ideas on what a working title could be for a Russ & Ramon Ortiz sit-com/reality series?  I'm sure Natto could design some great teasers.

I don't think "No" is a strong enough word

My brain and every bit of common sense in me agrees

But my heart doesn’t want me to. I feel bad for the guy. That fluke of a season in Atlanta (and maybe “fluke” isn’t strong enough either) is the best thing that will ever happen to him. I always liked him, even if he was mediocre.

You need heart in business? Whaaa?

I’m OK there haha. Old, nice, former players are one of the few things to get me sentimental. Not enough to make me want Ortiz on the squad, but enough to feel a pinch of pity for the man.

That fluke of a season in Atlanta

There’s more to evaluating pitchers than wins, you know. He had better seasons with the Giants than he did with the Braves.

Brian Sabean wants to kick tires. I want to kick Brian Sabean.

Really?!

More than wins? No way! Please enlighten me.

Sarcasm aside, I think that pretty much goes without saying. I wasn’t referring to the wins alone (in fact, you were the first to mention wins)… I was referring to was the fact that he got all those wins without pitching brilliantly. Or even super-impressively. It was, dare I say, flukey?!

by gvp914 on Aug 18, 2009 2:07 PM PDT up reply actions

Fair enough

There are those who think Ortiz was super-ultra-great his first year in Atlanta just because he won 21 games, so.

He was a pretty good pitcher in his first stint with the Giants.

Yup. Plenty of those. Virginia has a big Atlanta fanbase, and whenever I run into one, they usually bring up that season. And act like they stole him from us.

It can expect that fate with Ortiz on the team too.

Like I said, I wouldn’t want Ortiz on the team. But part of me hopes he’ll do well somewhere.

1) are the yanks not contending?
2) if he can’t crack the yanks rotation (CC, AJ, Gaudin, Joba, and Mitre) he won’t crack ours

I R 5

Yanks gave him the right to opt out

If he wasn’t called up after 3 starts. So he opted out. It’s in the attached link, not sure exactly of the situation tho.

And I completely agree with point #2

by gvp914 on Aug 18, 2009 1:46 PM PDT up reply actions

I was thinking the same thing when I saw that Gaudin was starting against the A’s. WTF?

by m34josh on Aug 18, 2009 1:47 PM PDT up reply actions

He is sorta replacing Joba. Joba was supposed to get extra rest and pitch wednesday, but they let him go on his regular day to have an extra guy in the bullpen. Now he is off for 9 days so I assume Mitre gets one of the starts in Boston

by m34josh on Aug 18, 2009 2:35 PM PDT up reply actions

Cliff notes…Joba is already near the number of innings they want him to throw this year so they are going to give him longer breaks in between starts the rest of the way out. Were supposed to start doing that last week, but didn’t therefore rotation is messy

by m34josh on Aug 18, 2009 4:33 PM PDT up reply actions

Haha! If only #2 were true!

Tell me you can’t hear the logic running through Sabean’s head right now… “Russ Ortiz is available, and Joe Martinez is our fifth starter at the moment. Russ is a gritty vet who’s been in playoff chases before. We could have him for a song…”

And of course, I guarantee you that even if Sabean got him to be a mop up reliever, Bochy would make him a starter.

I'm thinking but nothing's happening.

by JRPhillips on Aug 18, 2009 3:58 PM PDT up reply actions

After which comes the obligatory Sabean 2-yr guaranteed multi-million $ contract. Ouch.

I really appreciate all that Russ Ortiz has done for the Giants over the years, but I don’t see how he can help us now. If he were pitching well enough to help us now, he’d still be wearing an Astros uniform. :(
