Brian Sabean will be the Giants' GM next year, and Bruce Bochy will be the manager. We've improved too much for it to make sense to fire them. And that's why Edgar Renteria will be the SS next season:
1) Rent's hurt.
He's been playing hurt, and he's going to have off-season surgery. Watch: next March, there'll be all these stories about how well the surgery went and how good he feels and amd how great he looks on the field. That'll be the story: tough old vet played hurt, is much better, looking forward to a great season.
2) The guy's in our system who might replace him aren't ready.
Brandon Crawford is a good young SS prospect. Look at his track record. His sophomore year in college, he looked like a top 10 pick. Then he went to the Cape Cod League, had a hard time adjusting to wooden bats, screwed up his swing, and played badly the first half of his junior year. That's good for us--he fell to the fourth round--but that's his pattern--he takes awhile to adjust to new levels. This season, he started out in San Jose, played great, was advanced to AA, really struggled at first. He's started hitting again lately, and he'll be a good player for us, but he's the kind of guy who needs some adjustment time at each new level. Ehire Adrienza is 19, very talented, is hitting an empty .275 in low A ball, and makes a ton of errors. Brian Bocock is . . . Brian Bocock. That leaves. . .
3) Kevin Frandsen, who apparently told Bruce Bochy's daughter she looked funny in her new braces
i don't actually know if Bochy has a daughter who wears braces. But there's clearly something going on. Just don't see Franny getting extended playing time under Bochy.
4) After signing Rent to a 2 year FA contract, they're not going to sign another FA SS one year later.
Not unless Rent completely flamed out, which he hasn't done. He hasn't hit well, and he doesn't have great range defensively. That's not enough for this FO to decide to cut bait.
5) And you really do need a shortstop
Otherwise you end up giving up a lot of ground singles to left center. And next year, Edgar Renteria will be our starting shortstop. Who knows? He might even be good.
