don't be worried
from mlbtraderumors:
ESPN’s Keith Law says he’s hearing "lots of reports of deals that are done, including “unsigned” first-rounders, whose contracts are being throttled by MLB to prevent other players/agents from using them as leverage." He expects there to be a flood of announcements from 11pm-12:30am ET tonight, so stay tuned.
With malice towards the Dodgers
I'm going to sound like an idiot
But I see these graphs and I never understand them?
Is it a % likelihood of victory graph? That’s my best guess.
I choose to watch the Giants try to score runs. Not because it is easy, but because it is hard.

It’s fun when a team wins after the graph say they have a 0% chance of winning the game
/knows that when the graph shows 0% before the final out it means win% is <0.5 but still >0.0
I wonder what the score has to be for a team to have .5% chance of winning

According to initial studies by the nation’s top scientists, there is a direct relationship between the number of baserunners and the number of runs scored. Of course, since they’re all Giants fans, at this point it’s more speculation than theory due to lack of data.

I remember someone a couple years ago not scoring on their game winning homerun because he was mobbed before he crossed the plate. Either his run or the homerun didn’t count.

Just got back from the game
After sitting through that 3-0 game Friday when the Giants didn’t get a runner into scoring position until the eighth inning, tonight’s game was extra great. This time it was the Giants’ fans going nuts while the Met fans quietly got up and left. Joe Martinez wasn’t great, but he got the big outs when he had to, particularly when he got Sullivan with second and third. As for the big inning, Bochy and me don’t usually see things eye to eye, but when he called back Martinez and sent up Nate there with the bases loaded, I felt like going down into the dugout and kissing his ugly face. I never thought he would do that, even though it was totally the right move. Even if Nate hadn’t hit a bomb there, that was Bochy playing to win like he should be doing the rest of this season.
embarrassed father of over the hill Edgardo Renteria
yeah, that’s why I said we don’t usually see eye to eye. Nate should be playing everyday, and Bochy even said he would be. Since then he hasn’t started.
embarrassed father of over the hill Edgardo Renteria
Bochy also said that Molina wouldn’t keep hitting cleanup, but since then he’s hit cleanup in five more games than the team’s even played.

Currently I’m building my perfect Victreebell. I forget how I came up with the moveset I want, but it looks like:
Leaf Storm
Synthesis
Sludge Bomb
Swords Dance
I don’t usually look at competitive movesets when I build, although I might do it a little more when the Silver remake comes out next year. Right now I still just really like using kickass moves to kick your ass. Even though Synthesis and Swords Dance both require a modicum of strategy.

Hmmm… I don’t really like subbing Victreebel without a seed, but it goes against my entire nature to only have the one strong offensive move…. which would preclude using Sunny Day, which brings me back to Leaf Storm…
Wait… Victreebel doesn’t even have leech seed! Would doing some kind of subsynth work comparably well?
Like…
Substitute
Synthesis
Leaf Storm
Sludge Bomb
I know you don’t like the sludge bomb, but I’m really stretching to please both strategy AND myself here.

Sludge Bomb? Really? Poison-typed attacks never impressed me. Not enough type coverage even if you do get STAB. I’d put Substitute/Sleep Powder and Leech Seed in for Sludge Bomb and Synthesis if I were you. Subseeding is a lot more reliable than simply using Synthesis and the sub will let you use Swords Dance without dying instantly.
I’ve used Sludge Bomb with my Gengar and had a lot of success with it. I like to use type-coverage moves, so that helps explain it.
I think Victreebel’s available moves are kind of limiting, too. If you want an attack with a little pop, you either have to stat boost your shit off, use Hyper Beam, or go with Sludge Bomb.
Context, people. More context is good. Less context is bad. If you're willing to be reductive, then you're willing to be wrong.
by howtheyscored on Aug 17, 2009 8:20 PM PDT up reply actions
HYPAH BEEM GO! Yeah, that’s not a good idea. Also, Gengar can afford to be less defensive given his typing, speed, and ability. I’d be far more careful with a Grass/Poison type, which is why I recommended the Subseeding. Although you’re right about Swords Dance, so you could go Leech Seed/Sludge Bomb/Leaf Strom/Substitute.
I really need to think about this… I’m still fairly partial to “pow, kabam!” style fighting and even without a super effective, Sludge Bomb is a nice little attack. Subseeding is probably a good idea, but I would really need to work hard to convince myself to do it.
Hmmm…

This should help: I’ve got a Subseeding Breloom with Focus Punch that kicks ass. Focus Punch/Substitute/Leech Seed/Spore. Between Spore and Sub it doesn’t get hit, it can heal with Toxic Orb+Poison Heal and Leech Seed, and it hits HARD.
Plus I’ve got a Ninjask to pass speed and attack

I thought about using him, but Ninjask completely outclasses Yanmega. Plus, DT is banned for being really overpowered and I try to stay generally within the rules.
Anyway, Subseeding is pretty sexy because you can either stall for a long time if they’re constantly hitting you, or you can get a few attacks off in complete safety if they aren’t, which is usually the case.

IMO Poison is the worst type. It’s weak to two extremely common types in Ground and Psychic, doesn’t hit Steel at all (again common due to its defensive qualities), and only hits Grass super-effectively. At least Normal has some interesting to good moves.

I’m never going to try to breed IVs. Too much work. My strategy is: get an Everstone, catch Dittos will every nature, and use the Everstone to breed 12 with the correct nature. Then do 2 IV battles and pick the one with the best stats. If I get a perfect IV it’s purely by chance.
Yeah. I need to put away a weekend and just breed dittos all day. I need to at least get Attk, Sp Attk, and Speed.

It’s easier to just chain them outside Canalave City (go to the patch of grass directly east, use pokeradar).
If you’ve got access to Fireread/Leafgreen, you can due what I did to make it easier. Go to Erika’s Gym City (I can’t fucking remember the name…) and buy a bunch of Abras for like 20 coins each. Find the ones that have the nature you want and Synchronize, then import to D/P and lead with them. When you encounter a Ditto, it’ll have a 50% chance of having the same nature as the Abra. Since buying a bunch of Abra is easier than catching them, and this gives better results, it’s probably faster.
Of course, if you don’t have FR/LG, it doesn’t really matter…
Yep. No FR/LG. But chaining sounds like the best option I have for me.

Not infallible, but we should probably wait until both pitchers have some professional innings under their belt to come to a reasonable conclusion.
No
I can make a reasonable conclusion on what I think currently. I think Matzek was the better pitcher, and many thought the best after Strasburg, and that the only reason to take Wheeler was to save some cash. Now that that turned out to be only 600K instead of “record setting”, it looks pretty bad to me.

Look, when he gives an interview after being selected where he talks about his college plans and doesn’t even really acknowledge the team that selected him, it doesn’t loo like a safe move to take him. So he would up signing. At the time, it didn’t look good, and that’s all that matters.
Bruce Bochy would like you to look at the career numbers and stop complaining.
That’s now how drafts work.
Bruce Bochy would like you to look at the career numbers and stop complaining.
The point is to look at your options at the time and make the best decision possible at that time. That’s why I don’t like jumping over a general manager when they pick a bust, as long as it seemed like the logical pick at the time. At the time, Wheeler was a lot more likely to sign than Matzek, and you can’t risk not signing your first round pick.
Bruce Bochy would like you to look at the career numbers and stop complaining.
But he was signed, and that’s “all that matters.” That’s all I’m sayin.
Not trying to be overly contentious.
That doesn’t change what the thought process should have been on draft day.
Bruce Bochy would like you to look at the career numbers and stop complaining.
No, you’re wrong. It’s all fine and dandy to say that Matzek was a better pick now, but if you knew what was going to happen two months beforehand, you’d be the best GM in baseball history.
Yes, Matzek signed. And yes, it was for far less than everyone thought. But if I told you right now, you have to make a choice: Player A, who is a great HS pitcher that has a good attitude and wants to go straight into professional baseball ASAP, or Player B, who is a slightly better HS pitcher who has a strong commitment to go to college and has repeatedly indicated that he has interest in signing only if he gets paid a ton of money, you’d take Player A every time.
Wheeler is a solid pick, and you don’t know what the draft class will be like next year, not to mention the year jump you get by not taking the comp pick. Picking Wheeler was the right call then, and it’s the right call know; honestly, given what I’ve seen from interviews, I’d rather have Zack anyway.
It was obviously a tactic to get more money, which was his entire focus starting about a week before the draft. It doesn’t change the fact that he WAS signable at the time if you were willing to pay him, and it’s quite obvious now that it was all posturing.
Proud father of Juan Carlos Perez. Think Albert Pujols at a position to be determined.

I like draft sites because they give me a feel for what type of guy they're drafting
but I don’t think it’s a good idea to treat them like they’re the absolute word on scouting.
I think I recall some people saying that Wheeler has the higher upside, with Matzek having more of a #2 ceiling… who knows? Matzek was more polished and a lefty. Wheeler seems to have more behind the fastball. I’m not unhappy at all.
Psycho killer, qu'est-ce que c'est?
I’m not unhappy with Wheeler, I just question the process the Giants took to get here.

@#$% Juan Uribe. Dios es grande.
fair enough… the rumors of them following Wheeler from very early on seem to indicate that they were into him before Matzek started floating numbers like $7 million
Psycho killer, qu'est-ce que c'est?
It’s very possible that is the case, and if it is, I retract my comments (and since I can’t know, I probably should anyways). If they truly thought Wheeler was the better prospect, then they obviously did the right thing. I personally thought Matzek was better, but they know a shitton more than I do.
Proud father of Juan Carlos Perez. Think Albert Pujols at a position to be determined.
@#$% Juan Uribe. Dios es grande.
That's true
I still wished Matzek didn’t sign and we scooped him up later, but then again, nothing’s really certain (or even highly-probable) with HS arms.
Aaron King is still my homeboy... iffy mechanics and all
If Dustin Pedroia played in Seattle, not many people would be talking about him.
GET THAT VORP SH!T OUTTA HERE!!!
Let me suggest an alternate theory...
…that being that Matzek’s price got driven down significantly by being drafted so much further. The slot at the #6 spot was $2.34M. At the 11th pick in the draft, the slot was $1.8M. So he got a bit more than double slot. If he had gotten the same percentage at #6, you’re looking at $5M.
However, because he was taken so much lower, it was easier for the Rockies to hold onto a better demand.
That said, I’m not upset with the Wheeler pick. Based on what I saw, I do agree: I liked Matzek a little bit better, but not so much. Either pick seemed to have similar potentials in both ceilings and risks. All in all, we got a pitcher of about the same quality (very good) for a lesser price; I’m not upset at all.
That being said, I think we’ve found the guy that will play Jason Heyward to Wheeler’s Madison Bumgarner in future draft comparisons.

That certainly could be the case. And anyways, I am happy and excited with Wheeler, he’s definitely not some consolation prize. The Giants future looks much better today than it did yesterday.
And I promise not to start any “I told you so” threads if Matzek turns out better. I’m saving that for Scott Barnes.

4 year mlb deal? does that mean he’s a free agent in 4 years?
by sliderinthedirt on Aug 17, 2009 9:13 PM PDT up reply actions
Nope
It’s essentially a 4-year contract that’ll put him on the 40-Man roster right away.
Whenever that happens (if it’s immediate or not until 2010), he’ll use up the first four years of his major league career clock (including starting using options right away). Assuming nothing major happens, when this contract is up, he’ll have two more years of arbitration eligibility left, and be a free agent after that (so, he’d be a free agent for either the 2015 or 2016 seasons, barring new contracts/extensions/releases)

Hrmm… I don’t know. This whole thing has me fairly vexed. I understand the usefulness of a substitute moveset, and it actually seems to make a ton of sense with Victreebel, but… iono anymore…
Maybe we could talk about about my Wigglytuff.

I LIKE SUBSTITUTE! But you need a healing move/item, otherwise it won’t work. Sleep/paralyze moves are also good to have, although that only leaves 1-2 attack moves. But if you can sleep, sub, and attack, you’re very well defended from counter-attacks.
I really hope you’re intentionally building a Never Used team, because both Wigglytuff and Victrebell are pretty terrible pokes. Anyway, it looks like Wigglytuff’s best role is a tank or an annoyer, so either load him up with status attacks (Sing, Thunder Wave) or healing moves.
A couple movesets off the top of my head:
Wigglytuff@Leftovers
252 HP/128 Def/124 Sp. Def
Seismic Toss
Wish
Toxic
Perish Song
(This is a tank set; toxic and wish, then toss until you can wish again. perish encourages switch, which can then also be toxic’d, and of course can kill something big if they’re stupid enough to stay in)
Wigglytuff@Leftovers
124 Def/128 Sp. Def/252 Spd
Thunder Wave
Sing
Wish
Seismic Toss
(This is the annoyer set; paralyze/sleep, then heal up and toss until they switch, at which point you continue paralyzing/sleeping)
Yeah, when I was like 7 I played Pokemon Blue and I had a team with Charizard, Wigglytuff, Victreebel, Butterfree, Raichu, and Vaporeon.
I’m rebuilding that team for nostalgia’s sake, except I’m giving them more awesome moves than the ones my 7 year old self could conceive, like FIRE BLAST + HYPER BEAM OMG THUNDER IS STRONG!

Kyle Orton is not good, and I’m not just saying that because he threw 3 INTs in a preseason game. If you trade Jay Cutler and all you get is Kyle Orton and a RB who holds out and is already injured, then that’s a CATASTROPHE. I be they don’t even win 6 games. All they had was their offense, and without Cutler they REALLY don’t have that anymore.
I bet you the Bears make the superbowl this year.

Brewskies are my second team behind the Giants. I dated a fellow from Milwaukee who was a huge Brewers fan, became a fan because he talked about the team so much, managed to attract other Brewers fans, held onto the fandom after I broke up with the guy, got a ball signed by Prince Fielder, etc.

He’s resting for a while. When I got the word, it was a brief team-mandated trip to the reserve roster and it was not said when he’d return. He’s traveling with the team, though. With the word that he might play for Team USA in the World Cup this September, maybe that’s why he’s resting. I ventured a guess it was to get him ready for coming up to SF in September.

I hope no one is a Syracuse football fan. They named a former basketball player from Duke as their starting QB (he last played QB in high school).
Haha, that really sucks for Duke, kinda had a feeling that’d happen, he was pretty damn good as a QB in high school
He couldn’t play at Duke anymore.

Well, todays drive was great… long story short, you’re so right, beautiful mountains and Denver is AWESOME with the mountains in back
Most of the time what people try to make you feel for using as an excuse is really, in fact, something called a “reason.” Of course, if you’re just lying for your own benefit, then that’s an excuse.

i was listening to Damon Bruce on my way home earlier. I don’t think he knows much, but he was kind of entertaining in his disdain for the Giants’ hitting. He said there are two approaches at the plate; patient and aggressive. But that the Giants have neither. They have no idea what they are doing in the batter’s box. And that the only way to describe the Giants approach at the plate was somewhere between nightmarish and horrific.
No one here gets out alive.

There is an article on Bryce Harper (he went 0 for 5 with 3 Ks in the AFLAC All-American game. Some person commented that he could be the Giants cleanup hitter now.
It depends. Did he strike out on a slider low and in? Did he make first pitch outs? The people need to know.

from Rotoworld
Charlie Haeger held the Giants to three runs over seven innings on Monday night.
It was a losing effort, as he was outdueled by Chris Carpenter, but Haeger still impressed in his debut for the Dodgers. The knuckleballer impressively found the strike zone with 61 of his 80 pitches while avoiding a single walk and surrendering only five hits, but he was hurt by a pair of home runs that accounted for all the damage. The solid effort should earn Haeger another turn at least.
The Giants are getting shut down by unknowns even in games we don’t play.

I was there. And it was awesome.
Down 6-1, during the closest the Mets would come to a rally, and the crowd starts up the wave. They didn’t stop (shockingly, despite my loud, condescending mockery) until the scoreboard flashed one of those noise-ometers (which claimed a half-empty dejected crowd was up to 175 decibels). Un-fucking-real.
I started up the Let’s Go Giants (clap clap clapclapclap) in the sixth, and they couldn’t even get a retaliatory chant going. It was sad. Guy behind me muttered something about how I waited til SF was up 6-1 before I started; “big talk,” I replied, “from a guy doing the wave during his team’s rally.” Another woman yelled from above me “somethingsomething you’ll lose like you always lose,” to which I replied that I couldn’t hear her over the ten-game deficit.

Uhhh, what the hell?
The Yankees signed 44th-rounder Evan DeLuca, a Immaculata High (Somerville, N.J.) lefthander for $500,000.
Half a million for a 44th rounder?
Brian Wilson was a high-bonus nth-rounder
..so was Ishikawa.

So why is there both a baseball World Cup and the World Baseball Classic?
amateur and pro versions of the same thing? or what?
WBC was created by Bud Selig and is sanctioned by MLB. Baseball World Cup is sanctioned by IBAF, the worldwide governing body for baseball. Otherwise I don’t get the difference between the two in terms of who can compete, as professionals played in the 2007 WC tournament. Travis Blackley pitched for Australia, for example, and several players from Netherlands WBC and pro teams played in the tournament as well.
The World Cup has existed since 1938. Baseball didn’t make it to the Olympics as a medal sport until 1992. So I guess the World Cup was the only game in town in terms of an international tournament for a long time.

This year’s tourney is in Europe, with the finals in Rome. I gotta say, that would be a nice way to spend a month, in Europe with baseball.

Didn’t realize Tony batista is that big of a dude.
In the seventh or so, Tatis hit a hooking line drive foul right at me. I’ve been playing company softball all summer, so my eyes are at game speed. I’m out past third, about 25 rows up and the whole thing is happening in slow motion as the ball zeroes in on me and I rise up and ohmygodIdon’thavemyglove! and I’m cupping my hands to receive it softly and the two of the three guys two rows down jump up…
And the middle of the three guys reaches one hand up and snatches it out of the air like Miyagi and the fly. Totally nonchalant; never even stands up. I was bummed about losing out, but it was such a money move.

That was sweet.
Losing out on the ball was ok. I’d been talking a bunch of shit by that point, and gloveless there’s a decent chance I LOLFAIL the catch.
Plus I’ve had some luck with balls coming my way:
Yes, that one. I can’t find a video, unfortunately.

Haha, oh man, but that’s awesome that you’ve been lucky with some balls coming your way, unfortunately none have really ever come my way, i’m not a ball magnet i guess. :(
My head is a ball magnet. In 1991, I got hit by a line drive on the side of my head behind the Giants dugout. Mets were in town.
I’m having trouble resisting the urge to make balls on the chin jokes here people…

I missed this on draft day, somehow: Boston drafted RHP Blaze Tart out of Pendelton HS in Bradenton, FL.
I could not make that name up if I tried. Unfortunately, it looks like he has not signed.
