The Giants Bullpen, from July to Today

Early on this season the Giants bullpen was unstoppable. Brian Wilson may have been going to 3-2 every count, the setup crew was doing its job. Jeremy Affeldt was unhittable, Brandon Medders and Justin Miller were doing their job, and there was no Jack Taschner or Tyler Walker to screw things up. But lately the pen has cost the Giants a few games. The last month or so appears to have been terrible for almost every pen member on the surface. The stats say another thing though…

Bullpen review

Best relievers: Brian Wilson, Justin Miller, and Jeremy Affeldt

Worst relievers: Sergio Romo, Merkin Valdez, Bob Howry, and Brandon Medders

Best relievers ERA: 1.73

Worst relievers ERA: 5.17

It's obvious that Romo, Valdez, Howry, and Medders are either tired of the long season or just not pitching well. I think Affeldt's problems are more Bochy giving him too much of a quick hook. Miller has been lights out these 2 months.

Notable stat: Team is 2-13 in his appearances

I believe this is due to the fact that he’s used in mopup situations where the Giants are already down a few runs.

That's why it's there

to show Bochy doesn’t trust Valdez with any sort of a lead

To be fair to The Cranium

I wouldn’t trust Merkin with a slim lead either.

by Lars The Wanderer on Aug 17, 2009 2:19 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think it’s notable because it shows Merkin doesn’t know how to win yet. if he did, he could have turned those games around

Maybe Matt Cain could give him some lessons.

Sergio Romo: striking out professional hitters since 2005. And winner of the 2012 NL Fireman of the Year Award!

MOP-UP MERKIN

61-50 - Giants Series Record: 20-11-4, 15-3 at home

Adopted Giant: Daryl "Dealio" Maday - 3.58 ERA, .273 BAA, 50 K and 30 BB in a tad over 100 innings. Meh.

Everytime Valdez comes in i wanna turn off the tv cuz i know bochy is mailing that game in…used to feel that way about howry too but now he’s gettin into more games and more high pressure situations.

justin miller is doing really well still

just let him be the main set up guy and we will be fine until Jeremy gets his groove back. Also, I hate how Bochy would never let Affeldt close games with 2 inning saves because he was a former starter and he has the stamina. Also….
Jeremy>>>>>Brian Wilson.

I agree somewhat

I do think he needs to be used in higher leverage situations, but I’d probably still keep him behind Affeldt and Romo

Romo

needs to turn it around. He been terrible since July.

11 innings. Not really a great predictor, that.

Nah, he really just had the two bad outings where he gave up 6 runs without recording an out… since then he has a 2.57 ERA and a .457 OPS against.

Affeldt isn’t that much better than Wilson than you think he is…

by Natto on Aug 17, 2009 9:01 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

yet he is better

i d say affeldt is a much better pitcher than Wilson. Affeldt’s stuff is simply nasty. Amazing Curve, 94-95 mph fastball, great changeup.
Wilson is only fastaball, granted it is a great one.

Believe it or not, the only area where Affeldt has the edge over Wilson at the moment is ERA. And ground plays induced, I guess, if you count that. I’m not saying that Affeldt is bad. Far from it. Affeldt has been excellent this season. He’s not leagues better than Wilson though.

Brian Wilson

Is having an excellent season, both his ERA and FIP agree, and they are both over a full run lower than last year.

His K’s are constant, Walks are down, and HR’s are WAY down (And a lot closer to his career levels).

Brian Wilson is a very good reliever, and I believe at this point the best reliever on this team.

Yeah

I think I’ve been the most vocal Wilson complainer on here and I can’t complain even for a minute about how he’s pitched this season (except for in that game against the Reds). He’s done everything I wanted him to do in order to become a better pitcher and I’m impressed with the season he’s had.

I agree.

I’d still trade him for a bat, though.

What does Romo’s ERA look like after taking out those 2 bad outing against the Pirates and Braves? I thought he looked pretty good after those rough patches.

Affeldt is going through the same stretch he did to start the season. In April, I think he had a 1:1 K/BB ratio. Typically he comes in at tight points of the game, walks can really hurt.
