Draft Signing Deadline Open Panic Thread
The deadline to sign draft picks is at 9 PM Pacific time tonight - 11 hours, 35 minutes from when I'm typing these words. Zack Wheeler is not yet signed. OMG WHAT R U DOIN SABES GIT R DONE!!!!!
Tiresome, overused, year-old McCoven in-jokes aside, the deadline's coming up. Aside from Wheeler, the Giants have several interesting late-round picks still unsigned, there's drama over whether or not Steven Strasburg will sign with the NationLOLs, and most of the other top 15 picks haven't yet signed either. Here's a place to discuss developments, report wild (no doubt Twitter-based) rumors, and run around screaming in panic as the deadline approaches. Well, maybe not the last one if Wheeler signs early in the day. Although in that case, we can always panic about signing Jamaine Cotton instead.

I would be too. But I thought it would be handy to have a place to post updates – and there are some other top picks whose signing is more in doubt.

no doubt an open thread is a good idea. I wasn’t commenting on that, just my opinion about the likelihood of Wheeler not signing.

I doubt there will be enough updates for a Wheeler panic thread. I don’t think the media really cares that much about draft picks they’ve never heard about. The Nationals should have a panic thread for sure. I’m panicking myself. I want Strasberg in the NL East pitching against the Mets, Braves and Marlins for the next six years, not with the Padres next season.

He’d end up with Pittsburgh, KC, or Baltimore before the Padres. Obviously that could change between now and the end of the season.

Could change between the end of the season and next year’s draft, for that matter, depending on how well he pitches in whatever indy league he goes to, and what other prospects come along.
That's true
But it would be entirely on him failing, not some other prospect tearing it up. Harper might be the only guy who could be higher rated, but he’d be taken by the Nationals at 1.
Proud father of Juan Carlos Perez. Think Albert Pujols at a position to be determined.
@#$% Juan Uribe. Dios es grande.
But even in a best case scenario he falls lower than 1-1 which is what he is now, which is why I’ve always believed that Boras will agree to a deal at the deadline as long as it’s not an egregious low ball. The only way to increase his worth above 1-1 (and most hyped 1-1 of all time probably) is to get him declared a FA and there’s just no way for that to happen (at least there’s no way Selig is going to do it). So in the end, he has no leverage beyond getting the Nats to bid against themselves in order to increase his value. Boras knows that, and he’ll sign at $16-18 mil with a major league contract and perhaps some he has to be in the majors by… clause.

And I can’t think of many things more hilarious than if the Nationals failed to sign Strasburg this year and Harper next year. I guess that would probably be the breaking point in the current system.

If both of those guys failed to sign you would see the owners push hard for a hard-slotting system, and I think it would be very possible to get the player to agree to it. That is the main reason I think Strasburg will end up signing, because Boras knows a high profile prospect like him failing to sign could give a lot of weight to the people pushing a hard-slotting system, and if that were to happen it would cost him a ton of money.

Man, who is this PEDRO Sandoval guy?
He keeps popping up on sports sites everywhere. From CBSSports’ weekly preview thing
Rockies at Giants, Friday. Who would have ever dreamed back in late May, when the Dodgers had a nine-game lead in the NL West, the Rockies were firing Clint Hurdle and the Giants’ Pedro Sandoval had yet to be dubbed “Kung Fu Panda” that this series could play so big? But the Dodgers are slumping and the Rockies and Giants inch closer while tangling with each other in the NL wild-card chase. Pretty good matchup as Rockies ace Aaron Cook is slated to face Jonathan “No-Hit” Sanchez.

Jason Walls Signs
Don’t know if its big news or not but 19th rounder Jason Walls out of Troy University has signed. A while ago Andy Seiler in the well done draft recap he put together stated:
If the Giants can get their early picks signed, and if they can add someone in the Walsh-Walls-Mormann run, this has to be an unqualified win for this draft team.
His Assessment of Walls:
19. Jason Walls, RHP, Troy, #567 overall, 6’5’’/205: I was pretty high on Walls coming into the draft, as I placed him on my sleeper list and shadow drafted him in the 15th round. He’s got a good fastball that was described to me as full of life and a slider that was described to me as late-inning material. Put those two together and we have a late-inning reliever on our hands. However, Walls also has command problems and a windup that might lead to injuries, so teams naturally shied away from his pro body and natural stuff. Long-term relievers with command problems aren’t incredibly desirable. There’s a good chance Walls heads back to school for his senior year, as he’s yet to sign. DOB: 2/22/88.
Hopefully, in addition to Wheeler of course, we can get Walsh, Mormann and Seastrunk signed before the day is out.
Control problems
49K, 40BB, 12 (!) WP, 6 HBP in 64.1 innings. That, my friends, is poor control. Especially for a 21-year-old college junior.
He’s definitely a project, but if they can straighten out his mechanics the wildness should decrease markedly. I think the Giants are basically taking a flyer because of his velocity, the potential of a ++ slider, and his size. But flyers like that are typical for college juniors taken in rounds after the 15th.
"There ain’t much to being a ballplayer, if you’re a ballplayer." - Honus Wagner
Yeah, I recognize that you don’t get elite prospects with a 19th round pick. I just read the above blurb that referenced “command problems” and thought I’d look up his stats to see just how bad those problems are. Then I was pretty amused at the thought of a guy who averages a wild pitch per start.
They might not be considered elite prospects, but really good players can come out of late picks. I actually wonder what Brian Wilson’s draft report was? Does anybody have that handy (which would be pretty random but cool)?
Hard thrower with a great breaking ball. His coaches were shocked he signed with the Giants because he was recovering from Tommy John surgery.
by Dan from NM on Aug 17, 2009 11:08 PM PDT up reply actions
Wilson was looking to be a late 1st round or supplemental round pick before blowing out his elbow about two months before the draft. The Giants were generally commended for taking a great flyer on a guy who, if he bounced back from TJ as expected would be a steal for a low round pick (the Angels did much the same thing with Nick Adenhart, although Adenhart was a HS pitcher which I believe changes recovery rate stats).

Not only is it great that we got Walls in the fold, but this signing tells me that the Wheeler deal is done and just waiting for approval by MLB League Office to be announced. If we were still haggling with Wheeler at this late hour, then there’s almost no way we’d be wasting time trying to sign some mid-round pick like Walls.

The players should have dreams of rapid rise to the majors; long dramatic careers; championships, awards, riches, and fame. But the agents of these top draft picks should, I would think, always have the worst case scenario in mind — what if they flame out, never make it, and this bonus contract I’m negotiating right now is the core of their financial well being for life. $5 mil sounds like an obscene lot when we’re talking about these kids, but when my wife and I go to financial planners and their telling us what we should have saved and untouched in the bank in order to able to retire securely in our 60s, I understand perfectly well that if this $5mil is the only payday this kid ever gets (which is quite possible) it’s really not that much. Not bad, certainly, a payday I’d like to have, but still these guys are right to try to maximize it.
My Bucardo is better than yours.

If you don’t mind (if this is too personal, my apologies and you can just ignore this), what type of numbers are the financial planners throwing around for retirement and what area of the country are you in? I’ve never really thought about final numbers, I’ve just been saving as much as I can so far.
Proud father of Juan Carlos Perez. Think Albert Pujols at a position to be determined.
@#$% Juan Uribe. Dios es grande.
Well, without going into numbers, what we’ve been told is you need to be prepared to finance your lifestyle for about 30 years, so one quick way to calculate is, if you’re making enough currently to subsidize your life, how much do you need to essentially pay yourself your current income for 30 years. Hopefully, house payments are done with when you enter retirement, but obviously you have to be able to handle maintenance and emergency maintenance on your home, pay all bills, figure that you’ll need to buy one or two more cars in your lifetime. Then of course, there’s healthcare. We’re told you should figure paying 90% of your lifetime health costs in your retirement years (and for any of you who’ve gone through the experience of having children, 90% of your lifetime health expenses is a truly horrifying number).
And then, when you got all that covered, you can start to think about disposable income and the things you’d actually LIKE to do with your retirement (trips, toys, baseball games, etc).
In summary, between colon-cancer screening and financial planning meetings, it’s a real toss up as to which was the more painful part of turning 50.

In principle, I agree...
…but I also think the kids would be smart to look at the players who did not sign who never got a really good shot again, either losing money in bonus offers or never making it at all. It really is a risk proposition for both sides.
That said, this is a problem that needs to be addressed on the administrative side.

It sounds like the contract that the Rockies offered Harrington was terrible, 5 million but over 8 years and 3 arbitration years, can you imagine any player signing that? Maybe there are, but imagine if we had got Tim Lincecum to sign that. Or Posey. We’d be dancing in the streets. It’s too bad that his agent sounds inept and the Rockies sounded overly stubborn; I am sure they could have used a really good starting pitcher a few years back
Yeah I should say making the best deal possible is in no way the same thing as not making a deal. While HS kids certainly can and do improve their status at the college level (re: one Mr. Strasburg), you have to look at the value of where you were picked. Top 10 picks who don’t sign have a very very poor track record of recouping that loss. Luke Hochevar made it work, although I think looking back he really was very very lucky in the circumstances of his re-entry draft year from nearly every standpoint.

Here’s a surprise. A local Tampa reporter is reporting that the Rays won’t sign either of their top 2 picks. Imagine the panic if that were us! I’d heard that #2 (Diekroeger) was in love with his Stanford committment and unlikely to sign, but the loss of their #1 pick (Washington) surprised me. Even worse for the Rays is that they likely will have to trade Carl Crawford and/or Scott Kazmir in the off-season because they won’t be able to afford their payroll going into next year.
Yeah, the Rays really got shafted by the timing of the economic collapse. They made it to the WS last year and have a young and exciting team, but didn’t at all reap the benefits of a big jump in attendance that normally follows from that. The Tampa Bay area has been really hard-hit because it depended so much on tourism and construction.

Washington Nationals
The Nats are getting a bad rap. Last season they offered Aaron Crow more money than other pitcher in the draft and Crow rejected the offer. This season it is rumored the Nats have offered Stephen Strasburg $17M and Strasburg has yet to accept.
With Strasburg, they drafted perhaps the most hyped amateur prospect ever – and he’s represented by Boras. They had to know he would break the bank, and if they weren’t prepared to pay absurd amounts they should’ve drafted Dustin Ackley or something.
With Crow, wasn’t the difference between their offer and Crow’s demand pretty small?

But not unexpected. All I’m saying is that they didn’t exactly go into the draft not knowing what a nightmare signing Strasburg would be, and if they weren’t prepared for that they should’ve drafted someone else.

Strasburg needs to come down off the mountain and just accept that he’ll break the bank by oh, $6-7 million and be glad to be a franchise savior. I don’t know why he can’t be happy to have all this talent, praise, worship…unless he thinks he deserves to be paid like a Las Vegas hotel act.

True, but my point was that Miller fell in the draft, like Buster did, because of those rumors, so the Cards’s gamble paid off without having to spend extravagantly. Especially when you consider what some HS pitchers that were rated below Miller as prospects, and drafted in much later rounds, have been getting. Props to their front office for getting a steal at #19. This guy should immediately be their #1 rated prospect.

Well this deadline isn’t relevent for Scheppers as he’s got until next years draft to sign. It does make you wonder how much of their (both him and Crow) baseball careers they’re willing to give up to gain a bit more money though. They could conceivably miss 2 years playing time which is pretty inexcusable and has a good chance of costing them far more money in the long run.
Proud parent of Waldis Joaquin!
Good point
Although, you need to reduce the Scheppers remark down to 1 year, since with his injury he was never going to pitch last year at all.

The latest from Peter Gammons:
There are rumblings that the commissioner’s office wants to hold off the announcement of some of the bigger deals so they do not impact others. GMs say the Padres have had a $6.7 million deal with OF Donavan Tate done for five days. The Tigers reportedly have had RHP Jacob Turner done at $6.7 million, and second pick LHP Andrew Oliver done at $1 million. The Giants are very close at $3.4 million with RHP Zach Wheeler. The Yankees have signed OF Slade Heathcott. Oakland (USC SS Grant Green, 13th pick) and St. Louis (RHP Shelby Miller, the 19th pick) are considered locks to get done. There are conflicting reports on Colorado signing LHP Tyler Matzek, and Texas signing LHP Matt Purke (rumors had $4 million despite Tom Hicks’ bankruptcy). Cleveland and North Carolina RHP Alex White seemed deadlocked, but there was still time and the Indians could go to near $2 million. Tampa Bay and OF Levon Washington seemed far apart, as well.
So far, he’s been right on Heathcott (signed), Miller (signed), and Washington (not signing).
"There ain’t much to being a ballplayer, if you’re a ballplayer." - Honus Wagner
If this all holds true, then we’ll have gotten a steal with Wheeler at #6. $3.4M would be basically 50% less than Jacob Turner and Tate (and only $500K more than Shelby Miller) went for.
"There ain’t much to being a ballplayer, if you’re a ballplayer." - Honus Wagner
I hate this duplicity. This is a faked dog and pony show in some regards to make this deadline significant for press purposes. If Selig knew what he was doing, he wouldn’t pretend the sky would fall if these numbers got out.
Selig acts like Newt Gingrich, as if the Internet and fact checking do not exist.
It's always Noonan somewhere.
I was really bitter with the drafting of Wheeler over Matzek, although it wasn’t anything against Wheeler. However, if he signs for much less than Matzek (or if Matzek doesn’t sign at all), I will happily retract all complaints.

Wheeler should be next
If Gammons’s numbers are correct, then Wheeler’s signing should be the next big one from the 1st round that gets announced. It seems that MLB is staggering them to be incrementally higher in $$$, and since Miller was just announced at $2.9M then Wheeler’s $3.4M would be next in line.

The Rays and Jays were the big losers
The Rays didn’t sign either of their first 2 picks (Washington and Dierkroeger).
The Jays swung and missed on 2 highly-regarded pitchers that they drafted in the 1st round supplemental (James Paxton of Un. of Kentucky) and in the 2nd round (Jake Eliopoulos out of high school in Canada).

I was just thinking…it seems out of whack that Wagner Mateo, the consensus 2nd best hitter in the Latin American amateur market this year, signed with the Cardinals a month and a half ago for $3.1 million, while Tony Sanchez gets $2.5 million, Matt Hobgood gets $2.4 million, Wheeler gets $3.3 million, Tyler Matzek gets $3.9 million, and the Cardinals own first rounder Shelby Miller gets $2.9 million. When you compare what various amateur players are getting to sign, $3.1 million seems like a ton of money to be giving to a 16 year old kid with very limited experience playing organized baseball.
by FluLikeSymptoms on Aug 17, 2009 11:37 PM PDT reply actions
Yeah, that’s what happens when you have a free market and all of the teams can sign a player as opposed to just the team that drafted him. Would be interesting to see how they’d do if the international players were included in the draft process as they are in the NBA.
Proud parent of Waldis Joaquin!
But the Latin American market only really exploded in terms of big signing bonuses in the last 3 years. Before then the brightest stars were lucky to get much more than $500K. I think what we’ve been witnessing is the classic case of “chasing the market” of “gold rush fever”. Some teams had good success mining the under-appreciated Latin American market (mainly the DR) starting back about 10 years ago, then some more teams noticed and jumped in about 6 years ago, then the past 3 years every team noticed and just piled on indiscriminately. That’s why the Giants and a few other smart teams took a step back this year. Too many teams chasing too few actual big-time prospects.

Quick Question:
Is Starsburg’s College stats that much better than Lincecums?
Last year of college:
Strasburg: 109 IP 65H 16 BB 11 WP 16.1 K/9 1.6 BB/9 25 Total Runs
Tim: 125.1 IP 75 H 199K 63 BB 13 WP 14.3 K/9 4.5BB/9 39 Total Runs
So ok his stast are better. Is the Pac-10 harder than Mountain West?
I R 5
Well, definitely the Pac-10 is a much tougher league than the Mountain West. But I would say the reasons Strasburg is considered a better prospect than Timmy was at the time would be:
1) Much lower walk rate (even accounting for the weaker competition)
2) Throws harder (hits triple digits on occasion)
3) Not considered as much of an injury risk. He’s much bigger and has a relatively orthodox delivery. The fact that Tim has proved to be durable doesn’t change the fact that his perceived fragility was probably the biggest knock on him as a prospect.
comparing college stats is not a very good way to evaluate pitching prospects
