Post-Game Recap: Giants Shock the World

Middle finger list:

Francisco Rodriguez
Luis Castillo
Francisco Rodriguez again, just to be sure
Johan Santana
Jeremy Affeldt's new walk-the-only-hitter-he-faces fetish
That old Matt Cain juju, poking us all in the eye

Thumbs up list:

Pablo Sandoval
Bengie Molina
Brian Wilson
David Wright's health, I hope
Pablo Sandoval again, just to be sure
Hell, all of them again, just to be sure

After the Mets tied the game, I gave the Giants about  2% chance of winning. Basically the same odds as putting a chip on "00" when playing roulette. Whooop!

Those two should not do a game together. I don’t mind (can handle) them singularly. But they really seem to excel at highlighting the weak points in each other’s style of calling a game. To their credit they were not as bad as their D Back days ( Man were those terrible) and I thought they keep Homer-ism out of things unlike certain other announcers that do national games.

Good point.

Also, he’s struggled with walks all year. Some of his biggest DP’s have come after he walked a guy to make a bad situation worse. that doesn’t mean the walks don’t bother me, but he’s earned the chance to overcome them.

Whatever it is, I wish the dude would get it ironed out. He’s got such nasty stuff and Giants need to get him back on a roll. Teams are just waiting him out right now….

Some guy on the radio said Cain tipped his cap to a group of Giants fans giving him a standing O near the dugout. Didn’t see that on TV, but I’m biased. If true, then suck it…if not, it was a douche move.

by HowAboutNow on Aug 15, 2009 6:01 PM PDT up reply actions

There were three or four Giants fans behind the Giants’ dugout, standing and applauding as Cain left. It’s possible that’s who Cain was tipping his hat to, but it wasn’t clear.

And Bengie doesn’t madly pump his fist toward the crowd after his big HR’s, but he did today. It may have been they were especially vocal, and in their sight-line.

That being said, I thought he was taunting the fans at the time. And if that’s the case, it was probably a bad idea.

Well, think about it this way – if you’re at least a half decent guy, and I think Cain probably is, it has to be an absolutely terrible feeling to make a simple mistake and see it fuck someone up that bad. Cain was clearly upset about it, and he never shows any emotions. And then he had to take booes for the rest of the game, and see the opposing pitcher throw directly at his teammates, in what looked like clear retaliation. So coming out of he game, after a rough inning that looked liked it might cost the Giants the win, it had to feel great to see a group of loyal fans, surrounded by booing Mets fans, standing and applauding. Maybe even better than having all of AT&T give you a standing ovation.

Or something like that.

Not that anyone wants to watch the replay, but Cain looks up immediately after the ball struck Wright’s helmet—as in “Oh shit, what have I done?” Very clearly not intentional.

by speckops on Aug 15, 2009 7:00 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, he dropped to a squat about halfway between the mound and plate and didn’t take his eyes off Wright. He looked like he was praying. He also looked like he wanted to be in the group of people at the plate making sure Wright would live, if it weren’t for those pesky Unwritten Rules™.

by Merope on Aug 15, 2009 7:18 PM PDT up reply actions

I can confirm

The Giants had quite a contingent there. The biggest group (where I was) was up the third base line, but there were maybe a couple of dozen Giants fans directly behind the dugout. We gave a standing O in retaliation for all the boos coming down on him.

I can’t say who Cain was tipping his hat to, but there were definitely a lot of Giant fans there in that section. I’m not sure any Mets fans in the area I was at even saw a hat tip; they didn’t react to it.

No, everyone BUT the ATU (train operators/station agents) voted to accept the new contract in large numbers. ATU turned it down by a slim majority.

Now, the ATU folks are probably the least popular people in the BART system, due to a reputation for being unfriendly and unhelpful to their patrons. Add this to the horrible local economy and the vast pain a BART strike will inflict on everyone else, and the result is very nearly zero support for the ATU. If BART management stands its ground to any agree, ATU is going to get spanked.

We contemplated a strike last year. But ultimately didn’t.

Striking now is a really ballsy thing to do…

I moved to New York yeas after 9-11, a date that did not affect me on a very personal level – the tragedy was too distant for me to really get a hold of. ON the other hand, just talking with some people that lived here at the time and wow. They can think back to 9-12 and the rest of 2001 and 2002 and you can see the emotions race trhough them as they relive that time in their mind. So flying those planes down the Hudson at such a low altitude and with such big planes? That was a stupid move. I was pretty pissed. But Obama had nothing to do with it. Just some over zealous low level staffers and photographers looking for a good shot.

HA! nice dude, i went to a Reds Giants game last year and i had a couple of Reds fans like 14 or 15 behind me and say “Go back to San Francisco!” that went on for a good 3 innings, so i turned around and said “I can’t wait, cuz this city blows”

by PiKAgiant on Aug 15, 2009 6:13 PM PDT up reply actions

I heard that!

I was the one down and to your left, with the wild dark hair and black pinstriped jersey w the 80s curved writing “Giants” on the back. The “HO-MOS” guy seemed to take particular exception to me. Maybe because I wasn’t quite sitting with that mob of Giants fans.

This bring up a good point.

What the hell happened to the Mets’ fans? The passion just isn’t there, let alone butts in the seats. Is it all the injuries? The sense that the season is lost?

I personally suspect the true, loud NY-to-the-bone fans (the ones who go HOO! between every “Let’s Go Mets!”) were priced out by the new shrine to the Dodgers that the Mets’ owners call Citi Field. I know a LOT of Mets fans that are unhappy, or at least confused, by all the Dodgers hagiography going on in Flushing.

When the MIami Heat retired Alonzo Mourning’s #33, it was the third number they retired. It also happened to be the first for any player who actually played for them.

The other two retired numbers? Michael Jordan (#23, not #45)…and, a guy who doesn’t even play the same damned sport, Dan Marino.

I’ve lived in Alabama all my life. As you can imagine, I’ve heard more than a few unflattering and wholly unfounded stereotypes.

I’ve always found it somewhat disheartening that the closed-mindedness the other 49 states accuse of us is less a reflection on us and more on their outdated notions of life and culture in the South. It gets very frustrating at times.

Fun and Tough Game as a Giants fan at Citi...

I gotta say, Mets fans heckling out here are pretty weak…really really weak.

One guy, as we walked to the subway after last night’s game, started saying the Giants’ sucked right down to their uniforms. I yelled back that the Mets were wearing old NY Giants uniforms, and he got all confused, crosseyed and everything.

Then there was the guy I noted above chanting “Homos” and I yelled back “This coming from a guy from Queens!”

And, of course, “Don’t Hit Pandas; Pandas Hit Back!”

And that’s ignoring the fans who’d walk by us yelling about Wright getting hit in the head and it not being fair Molina only got hit in the elbow. They didn’t deserve responses.

I haven’t even had to break out the ‘Replace-Mets’ line yet.

I started loudly laughing, and an already drunk fat dude in a overworked orange wifebeater says, “Hey, toothpick! Quit wit’ da laughin’ before I take dis bottle ta ya face!”
And he brandishes an empty bottle-shaped aluminum can at me.

I was not intimidated.

But my girlfriend, not the biggest sports fan or most aggro person by any stretch, turns to him and says, “You better shut your mouth before you get beat up by a girl in a hot pink miniskirt!” His buddies quoted that at him the rest of the game, and probably still do. Lulz.

  • The countries need to be close to each other. They don’t share a border? Fine, I guess. But this? You’d have to go through 3 different countries in order to walk from Egypt to Iraq. And for the love of God, please make sure next time that they’re on the same freaking continent!
  • It would really helpful if the countries sounded alike. Iraq/Iran could work. Two countries that end with “stan” is borderline. Egypt and Iraq? They don’t even have one letter in common.
  • And if you can’t do the first two – this trick should help: just choose two countries no one in the US cares about. Confuse Jordan and Syria, no one will notice. Put Yemen next to Turky, who cares? But don’t forget the country you’ve been at war with for the past 6 years.

I know this was being discussed when Cain left the game, but in case anyone missed it, here’s Baggs take on the situation:

Cain tipped his cap as he came off the mound, which I’m sure the Mets fans didn’t appreciate. What they couldn’t have known is that the small contingent above the Giants dugout that stood and cheered him weren’t just any group of out-of-town Giants fans. They were the minority owners of the club, along with their families. Bill Neukom, Larry Baer and many of the investors accompanied the team to New York for the series. After Friday night’s loss, they were glad to have something to cheer — finally.

I’d tip my cap to the people who sign my checks, too.

The reason this is funny

Is that the Nationals could have taken Crow or Matzek with their second pick, but went cheap and took Storen in order to save money for Strasburg. So now they have no Strasburg, and a closer for a #10 pick.

Well, they couldn’t have taken Crow because he didn’t give his permission to be drafted again. And they were planning on being able to sign Strasburg at the time, so taking him and then Matzek (who is asking for a gigantic bonus himself) would have been even more risky – at least they’ve ended up with somebody with Storen.

Well, no. If they had the money to offer Strasburg record breaking money, plus sign Storen, then surly they had enough money to just sign Matzek. I’m not saying it’s what they should have done at the time, I just think it’s funny – the only reason they didn’t take Matzek is that they had already taken Strasburg, and now they’re stuck with neither.

Kasten wouldn’t reveal the exact amount of Washington’s offer nor would he say what, if any, counteroffer Boras had made. But Kasten characterized Boras’ approach as “advocating a new methodology for evaluating draft picks” — changing the way a draft pick’s worth is determined.

“This kid is so impressive. We have nothing but the highest regard for him. If he wants to come and begin his career right now — and do so with the largest contract ever given to any drafted player in the history of Major League Baseball — we can help him accomplish that,” Kasten told the AP. “But if this is more about changing the whole way an industry does business, then we won’t be able to reach a deal.”

As was said before, screw Boras. It’s time for baseball and the player’s union to put some real control on this situation.

nate davis didn’t throw a pass and doesn’t know the offense. Smith looked tentative and couldn’t make a quick throw. Shaun Hill is better @ this point, and Smith has work to do to prove otherwise.

I’m still giving him time, and i know everyone else is too, but at the end of the day, yea, Hill will win the job, and having Smith as a back up is great! Plus i guess this means we’re drafting another quarterback? UGH!!!!! Nate Davis is still tight

His numbers look alright but he was still too tentative in the pocket. He needs to learn to sit in the pocket and step in to the pocket instead of bouncing out when theres pressure. He also screwed up a screen pass during the 2 minute drill that could have gone for at least 20-30 yards.

I think the problem is less Vick getting screwed. It’s more that the other guys didn’t get adequately punished. Vick may, in some small way, be getting a raw deal. But he brought everything on himself with his behavior. I’m going to save my outrage for people who didn’t commit felonies.

Would Vick being in San Francisco fly with anyone here???? probably not, he’d get sooooooo much hate here, i own a dog, and honestly i don’t care about the whole situation, it’s just another bad thing, but i’m not flippin a shit over it, for all we know that kinda thing that he did is well known down there where he grew up

by PiKAgiant on Aug 15, 2009 11:47 PM PDT up reply actions

You’re right, it is messed up. I think a potential explanation is that with DUI, you aren’t trying to hurt someone – you end up doing it because you made a horrible, unforgivable decision.

With Vick, he made many direct choices to do what he did with a clear head. The thought of somebody abusing animals (or, for that matter, humans) intentionally in cold blood is very disturbing.

Right, but at the same time, where he grew up, we don’t know if it was accepted down there, and i did hear about it through ESPN and yea KNBR that people think that it is a little bit more accepted down there, because it happens there, rather here in the Bay Area

I can buy that excuse to a certain extent for the actual fighting of the dogs. Not so much the abuse of them in preparation for the fighting. That’s the part that really disturbed me.

Like I said, I’m not going to start re: Vick, but I’m hung up on Stallworth. I know laws vary per states, but DUIs seem like the one thing that’s not open to negotiation. Unless you’re Stalloworth, it seems.

He only got 24 days in jail, but he’s under house arrest for two years, during which he’s allowed to leave home to work out (basically means he’s allowed to go to work). So he didn’t really “just” get the 24 days.

That said, I thought his sentence was ridiculously light. If nothing else you have to throw the book at people for DUI manslaughter just for the deterrent effect.

Long-time listener, first-time caller

Following the Giants since the Polo Grounds and enjoying Lincecum as much as I enjoyed Marichal. Much love to the Panda as well. But for a team with very little to no margin for error, here’s what I’d like to see these last weeks of the season – I don’t care that he hit a game-winner tonight, bench Molina. He is the worst #4 hitter I think I’ve ever seen in MLB and he provides none of the intangibles to cover up for his weaknesses. And please don’t tell me that he makes this staff go – bring Posey up now and give him the job. How many more times must we see Molina reach for the same sweeping pitch out of the strike zone, only to ground weakly to 3rd or short or hit a lame pop-up and kill another inning? Bench Garko as well and start finding out which outfielder can play first. With rare exceptions, Keith Hernandez/Vic Power/Wes Parker, all first basemen are pretty much the same. Ishi can still be a late-inning defensive replacement but let’s try something radical. I’d bat Nate 4th and see if he doesn’t rise to the occasion. If Bochy doesn’t have the guts to dare to be unorthodox, and feels he must play Molina, bat the guy 7th or 8th. Take the shot, try something different. Considering we’ve come back once this season from 3+ runs down to win, and we’ve got 5 teams with a reasonable shot at the wildcard, doing nothing is not acceptable. Garko is clearly no Victor Martinez who was the only right fit at the trade deadline. Would love to know if we offered and what we offered for V-Mart? Martinez behind the plate the rest of this year and moves to first next when we all know the catching job is Posey’s. I simply cannot watch Molina and his negative OBP any longer. Do something.

Watching since the Polo grounds?

Wow, I’m guessing you’re still in NY. IMO, bringing Posey up now is not really the best idea. Maybe this is coming from my hockey fandom (where it as definitely bitten the Sharks), but sticking prospects in the major leagues early can really screw with their development. And while Posey would likely be no worse than Molina at this point, it is very possible that bringing Posey up now would stunt his development.

Great game

Was at the park, and the Mets fans seemed to thin out from the 8th or so on, so that by the time Molina hit the homer, it was fan mix in my section (upper-upper reserve in RF) was 50-50. Wonderful. Right before Wright was hit by the pitch, the dude/dad behind me was telling his family that today’s game needed more brush-back pitches. At first I thought Cain had just dusted Wright off the plate, and it was a funny coincidence. Not so funny when Wright didn’t get up, and Cain went into that depressed looking squat half-way to home.

Angry Panda was great, and shut-up the Mets “faith”-ful. The view on those homers to right where is one of the nice things about sitting out there in the nose bleeds.

Travis Ishikawa, defensive replacement. 3-6-3 double play. Great stuff.

Cain 2Ks and 3 SO. At the beginning of the game, I mentioned to my wife that with a hit Cain would be batting better than Brian Schneider. I’m not sure if the math works on that but…. Only two K in the game? Felt like more.

So what do you all think? Brian Wilson closer/long-relief? He can do the dual role it seems.

Oh, and I grabbed the last batting practice ball when Jonathan Sanchez tossed it into the seats as he headed into the club house. Bruised my leg leaning over a chair, and broke the heart of some kid that had just hurtled three rows to get there. Sorry kid, it was my first official MLB ball – even if it was just BP.

Wow, Mets fans are angry at Matt Cain right now.

Do they really think it was intentional?

Yea, i mean their whole team is decimated by injuries, so no wonder their team would be pissed

They are allowed to be pissed

But it was clearly unintentional

Right, and that’s from our point of view… and haha, like why the heck would Cain want to put 2 guys on in that situation??? Ask any Mets fans that. At best it just wasn’t good at all for Cain’s sake, luckily he got out of it, but yea, you don’t put someone on with 0 out a man on

by PiKAgiant on Aug 15, 2009 11:18 PM PDT up reply actions

He didn’t get out of it. The Mets scored that inning. Castillo tagged up and scored on two fly balls. The HBP (in, I believe, an 0-2 count) definitely led to a run scoring.

by taliesin on Aug 16, 2009 12:03 AM PDT up reply actions

Oh, my bad, good call on that one, needless to say, you see my point

by PiKAgiant on Aug 16, 2009 12:04 AM PDT up reply actions

This is not necessarily with no outs but I was checking the leaders in HBPs and the top 6 are all good teams: 1-6, Yankees, Red Sox, Rangers, Phillies, Angels, Dodgers.

by SFGuy on Aug 16, 2009 12:15 AM PDT up reply actions

I guess that has something to do with baserunners, you know? Getting people on = more chances at RBI’s

by PiKAgiant on Aug 16, 2009 12:17 AM PDT up reply actions

Those are the teams that hit the most batters.

to be fair

If someone hit any of our players in the head I’d be pissed, intentional or no, but I like to at least imagine that I’d cool down and pay some attention to what was going on. We seem just a hint more intellectual sometimes in the way we deal with and respect other teams’ players but I like to imagine that if the situation were reversed and say Parnell had hit Garko that we’d at least try to acknowledge it was accidental once we were done calling for Parnell’s head.

Anybody’d be pissed right after it happened. It’s how you deal with it later that distinguishes you, IMO.

by offthedeepend on Aug 15, 2009 11:15 PM PDT up reply actions

Exactly, i agree, like later after the hit, such as now, it’s how you deal with it now where it defines you. Right now, i’d be VERY pissed, but at least be able to deal with it and say it’s almost part of the game

by PiKAgiant on Aug 15, 2009 11:17 PM PDT up reply actions

Right. I’d like to think we’d react with a bit more perspective and maturity.

One nice thing to emerge from the morass that are ESPN comment boards is that sentiment seems to be generally pro-Cain / anti-douchey Mets fans & players. Francouer said something about how they ‘had’ to throw at a Giant no matter the intent of Wright’s beaning.

He’s right. That’s the way it is. There are consequences to hitting a guy in the head, regardless of intent.
Now the douchey Mets fans on the other hand…

by SFGuy on Aug 16, 2009 12:33 AM PDT up reply actions

Maybe the Giants could trade him to NY

From Baggs blog:

According to Brooklyn native Rich Aurilia, Citi Field passes muster. But a part of him still yearns for old, decrepit, Shea Stadium in all its municipal glory.

"I miss it more because that’s where I went as a kid," Aurilia said. "You come here and it’s not standing, and instead you see this big, monstrous stadium – I’ve got mixed feelings about it."

Aurilia is on the disabled list with what the team lists as an ankle injury. He’s expected to be activated when rosters expand Sept. 1, but he won’t get the chance to play in Citi Field.

"Being here is enough," he said. "Shoot, if I’m active, I probably wouldn’t play, anyway."
