Rule 8.02(d)-- The pitcher shall not intentionally pitch at the batter (emphasis on intentionally)

“If, in the umpire’s judgment, such a violation occurs, the umpire may elect either to:

(1) Expel the pitcher, or the manager and the pitcher, from the game, or

(2) warn the pitcher and the manager of both teams that another such pitch will result in the immediate expulsion of that pitcher (or a replacement) and the manager."
_______________________________________________________

So the rule ONLY deals with INTENTIONAL pitches, in the judgment of the umpire. The famous “warning” doesn’t mean that the next HBP is “automatic ejection,” but that another intentional pitch would result in ejection. The phrase “another such pitch” in subsection (2) refers to another intentional pitch.

Thanks for the actual rule

This seems like one of those cases where the actual rule isn’t what announcers usually say it is. Rules about checked swings being another example: I’ve heard like three different explanations of how that’s supposed to work.

Adopted Giant: Fred "OBP and UZR, Dammit!" Lewis

by jcb9 on Aug 15, 2009 3:38 PM PDT up reply actions

Whether it counts as a swing or not.

I’ve heard it claimed that it’s whether or not the bat crosses the plate, whether or not the wrists break, etc.

Jon Miller read the actual rule on air once – as I recall, it was pretty vague and unhelpful.

Brian Sabean wants to kick tires. I want to kick Brian Sabean.
Adopted Giant: Fred "OBP and UZR, Dammit!" Lewis

by jcb9 on Aug 15, 2009 3:42 PM PDT up reply actions

I think Miller said the actual rule was, “If the batter attempts to strike the ball with the bat,” or words to that effect.

Brian Sabean wants to kick tires. I want to kick Brian Sabean.
Adopted Giant: Fred "OBP and UZR, Dammit!" Lewis

by jcb9 on Aug 15, 2009 3:45 PM PDT up reply actions

Rule 2.00, definition of "Strike"

There is absolutely nothing about “crossing the plate” or “wrists breaking” or anything like that. There are no bright line rules about strikes.

Rule 2.00 lays out all the definitions in the game, including the definition for STRIKE. There are 8 ways that a strike can be made. The one relevant to check swings is subsection (a), which is a legal pitch that is “struck at by the batter and is missed.” So there, the judgment call would be what constitutes “striking at” the pitch.

Rule

You can chug that shit like soda. It’s one of the few cheapo beers that is just smooth enough in its watered-down flavor for you to just keep on going.

I still have this dream

Of us being one win away from making the postseason, and we are facing (insert team here), we’re in the 17th inning, Sanchez and Sandoval due up, and just need to get three outs to put us in a position where we can get the Wild Card…

Enter Noah Lowry, to thunderous applause.

Of course, he’d throw one pitch and his arm would then finally, literally, fall off.
