How bad is the Giants offense really?

After today's loss against the Mets, I decided to try to figure out how bad this Giant's offense really is. I stacked it up against offenses of the last 15 years in terms of runs scored (1995-2009) and put them and the Padres on their current run pace to end the year. The Giants are projected to score 641 runs this year, the Padres 623. Here's how they stack up against offenses of those 15 years, from worst to the today's Giants.

Least runs scored, (1995-2009)

1. 1995 Cardinals 563 runs

2. 2003 Dodgers 574 runs

3. 2002 Tigers 575 runs

4. 2003 Tigers 591 runs

5. Tied 2004 D-Backs and 1995 Phillies 615 runs

7. 1998 D-Rays 620 runs

8. 1995 Expos 621 runs

9. 2009 Padres 623 runs

10. 2002 Brewers 627 runs

11. Tied 1995 Royals and Pirates 629

13. Tied 2004 Brewers and 1995 Dodgers 634

15. 2008 Padres 637 runs

16. 2005 Nationals 639 runs

17. 2008 Giants 640 runs

18. Tied 2009 Giants and 2008 Nationals 641 runs

Of the last 15 years, there has been around 450 teams in the MLB. That means that in those years, 431 teams have had scored more runs in a season then the Giants are on pace to score. Among the teams on this list are team that have lost the 2nd most games in a season and the team the next year (Tigers), inept offenses repeating (Nationals, Padres, etc.), and teams coming off a strike (Royals, Pirates, and Cards). That's right, the Giants are just as bad as we thought they were.

Definitely

I think Dennis Green should coach this team. I never thought they were this bad though.

you mean we’re going to score one more run than last year? I owe Sabean an apology. He DID improve the offense this past off season!!

not many

could put together an all-time top 20 offense-TWO CONSECUTIVE YEARS.

Then again, he isn’t actually swinging at first pitches, getting picked off, etc. Historic efforts like this take TEAMWORK. And grit, veteran savvy, etc.

considering sandoval’s contributions, its kind of amazing how bad the rest of the lineup is. and its kind of amazing how good the pitching is considering we’re in contention

But

I bet our run differential is better

Maybe

but this offense is nearly historically inept. A top 20 worse offense for the last 15 years is terrible. Pitching is the only thing keeping this team from being the Padres

Pitching is a legit weapon

you have to throw that in the equation

If that is what makes this team good, then so be it

I'm fine with it

but I’m saying scoring 0 runs against Parnell, a bullpen guy is pretty bad. Most playoff teams have a ton more runs then us. I’m 99% sure that none of these teams never made the playoffs.

DH or not, they have scored 75 more runs than the Giants. Thats sad for both teams :-(

Better pitchers in the AL make up for the DH.

Data, Cooky?

I understand you to be asserting that pitching in AL is better than the NL, and that that superiority essentially balances out the DH. If I have that right, I don’t see that data that supports that AL pitching is better than NL pitching. It appears that it is incorrect that AL pitching is better than NL pitching.

According to Baseball Reference, NL’s average in ERA, H/9, HR/9 and K/9 are all better than the AL averages. It’s true that the AL average BB/9 and K/BB are better than the NL, but I’m sure you didn’t mean to suggest that those two trump the other four when reaching your conclusion.

oh but AL pitchers have to face lineups composed entirely of hitters… NL pitchers get to pitch to pitchers who we all know can’t hit…
blah blah blah blah blah…

Here's the thing

This:

but AL pitchers have to face lineups composed entirely of hitters… NL pitchers get to pitch to pitchers who we all know can’t hit…

Actually makes perfect sense, while this:

blah blah blah blah blah… I get sooooo sick of hearing this

Isn’t actually an argument.

Just because it sucks doesn’t mean that it isn’t true.

There’s the three part study to which Missing Barry linked (there are also other studies but that one covers it).

There’s also the fact that, over the past 5 years, NL batters’ OPS against AL pitchers has been constantly below what it has been against NL pitchers (usually by about 40 points), even though in half the Interleague games NL teams didn’t have to let their pitchers hit, which they always have to do in the NL). And at the same time period, AL batters have constantly had a higher OPS agaisnt the NL than against the AL (again usually by about 40 points), and, again this is despite the fact that AL teams had to let their pitchers hit, which they don’t have to do against other AL teams.

By my rough count, they've now wasted

at least a half-dozen quality starts this year, all losses, where the offense either got shut out or held to less than three runs by mediocre-at-best opposing pitchers. That six-game swing is huge right now.

Sure, we weren’t expecting the team to even be in competition for the WC slot or play above .500 this year, so this is all really gravy now. But opportunities for post-season play are more rare than people think, and teams have to maximize those opportunities when they arise because so much can affect future chances (injuries, etc).

The problem is that well before the deadline Sabean saw this team could compete, didn’t make any deals to get offensive help sooner in the year when they could really have benefitted from additional power, and then gave up two nice pieces of the future for guys who don’t address the original problem: a lack of run production. That was his only real chance because waiver-wire deals for the Giants are remote given their position in the standings.

So we’re left with this frustration of looking at what could have been this year, coming close the the post-season but missing it, and watching the good pitching keep getting wasted by a pathetic offense that should have been fixed much sooner in the season.

To answer your question, very. I think it’d be interesting to see this list park-adjusted, it seems like many of these teams play in at least fairly favorable pitcher’s parks.

Padres offense...

is much better than the Giants, especially when you adjust for park

by NeifiChicken on Aug 15, 2009 2:05 PM PDT reply actions

Also

our run total is INFLATED this year due to our awesome clutch hitting.
An adjusted number for RS this year is 429 runs instead of 455, which would give a prorated total of 604 runs. A solid 5th worst.

This is not counting today’s 5 run explosion. However, I also think you should adjust for era, 1995 I think had lower run scoring overall than 2009.

More runs per game than this season, though.
