Pinch hitting for Grate Schierholtz

Bottom of the 9th vs the Fodgers on Wednesday, runners on first and second and one out. Grate Schierholtz coming to bat. The Fodgers bring in a lefty. Grate is hitting .452/.455/.742 against lefties this year (granted, only 31 ABs).

Star-divide

The Gyros "counter" with Rowand, hitting .223/.275/.407 vs. lefties this year and is stirring memories of Mario Mendoza since the break. Was this Bochy sending text messages from the dugout? Was this Flannery? I need to know, because:

Rowand promptly grounded into a 6-4-3. Personally, I didn't even watch it. I just sat down when the move was announced and since everyone in my section was standing, I only had to hear the collective groan of the crowd to know exactly what had happened.

I've taken the obligatory 48 hours to cool off on this issue, but I'm still furious. I think the move had to be Bochy because no manager hits for "developing" players in clutch situations more often than this guy. Did this peeve anyone else the way it peeved me? Makes no sense.

Which begs the question, how depressing will it be when he signs a 3-year extension after we just miss the playoffs this year?

Follow up question: Are the Giants winning "despite" Sabean and Bochy this year or because of them?

It’s been discussed and Bochy didn’t seem happy about the decision in the post-game press conference.

Interesting that the ejection actually did matter, leading to the wrong decision by the interim manager (in this case the interim to the interim)

I missed that discussion. Was Bochy upset that he hit into the DP, or that Nate was pulled for Rowand? Pinch hitting a righty seems right out the same playbook he has been using all year so you can’t really blame the coaching staff. I would think Bochy would go for Garko though because he is less likely to hit into a DP

during the post game press confrence, Bochy said it was Flannery’s decision to PH for Nate, and he seemed quite annoyed by it.

Blame Flannery! He’s pretty well screwed up this whole year. Or not.

It was a dumb move, but Rowand IS a better hitter than Schierholtz against lefties. Platoon differences are real.

And really now: “Grate”? Really?

by Evan on Aug 14, 2009 10:38 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I dunno, Schierholtz hit LHP pretty well in the minors – well enough that I don’t think you’d pinch hit for him against them – and has hit them well so far in the majors as well.

Yeah, that’s why it was a dumb move. You’re burning one of your few bench players to hit for one of your better hitters.

But Nate’s minor-league numbers show that he was consistently worse against lefties than against righties, while Rowand for his career is hitting a cool .288/.348/.501 against lefties.

by Evan on Aug 14, 2009 10:47 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

He was worse against lefties than righties – but he still had a .800+ OPS vs lefties.

Yes, but the small-sample brigade around here seems to believe he’s one of those rare lefties who his better against lefties, which he clearly isn’t. I think it’s important to make that point. Nor is Rowand horrid against lefties, as his 2009 numbers would suggest — just the opposite, in fact.

Dismay

I happened to make my way over to the GameDay site just as the Giants pinch-hit for Nate with Aaron. I distinctly remember thinking WTF. Well, more like WT… in my case, but you get the idea. It’s time to take the training wheels off.

Rowand is also slower, farther away from first base for the DP, nursing a hamstring injury and in the midst of a 2 for 20 streak…

Yeah … I do think it was a bad move, just saying that you have to look beyond recent splits.

Plus, you have the world’s slowest man on first base, making a ground ball a sure DP. And Rowand hits into a shitload of GIDPs. It was a completely boneheaded move.

exactly

just ignore the splits, and schierholtz was still the better option

by sfoakbay on Aug 14, 2009 12:42 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yes.

I was initially annoyed at the choice to pinch-hit for Schierholtz, but became even more angry when Garko was pulled back in favor of Scott.

by ryanmiles on Aug 14, 2009 10:46 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

yeah, that was the worst part of it. I didn’t think you needed to pinch hit for Schierholtz there, but if you did want to pinch hit Garko for him I think that would have been a reasonable move. When they sent Garko out and then pulled him back that’s the part that was so absurd.

by FluLikeSymptoms on Aug 14, 2009 10:49 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

This, exactly.

by fwoty oz on Aug 14, 2009 12:06 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I am not defending the move

I think that Garko was not pulled back but was getting ready to PH for Ishi in the event that Rowand either didn’t get the game winning hit or make 2 outs.

by VizquelQuest on Aug 14, 2009 12:09 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Not a good idea

If we didn’t win the game that inning we’d be stuck with Garko in RF the next inning. You’d have to take him out for Rowand. Then the next inning the pitcher’s spot is up and you have no one to pinch hit with.

The problem with your analysis is you’re only looking at Schierholtz versus Rowand and forgetting there is a second side to that equation. George Sherrill eats LHB alive. Seriously, check his career splits. .164/.227/.268 against LHB, .260/.369./387 against RHB.

The dumb move wasn’t pinch hitting for Schierholtz, it was using Rowand instead of Garko.

Why do people think Garko would have been better than Rowand?

Garko would have popped out rather than grounding into a double play!

My Gravestone

My anger was loud enough after he grounded into the double play that my wife said for the first time to me “Honey, I’m worried about your blood pressure.” I swear my dying words after my stroke would have been “Put…on … my… gravestone…‘Murdered by Rowand and Giants Management.’”

I was at the game

as soon as I saw both Garko and Rowand out there taking swings, I thought that Garko was going to hit. But then I realized that this team still is (despite his ejection) Bochy’s team and Rowand would hit. I was pissed. I know that Garko would at least not grounded into a double play.

I can't blame Flan-Bo for going by the book, but I would have kept Nate.

If he’s going to play everyday and be a star, he’s going to have to hit lefties. Plus, I would have taken into consideration that it was only a 1 out situation and Nate’s less likely to GDP. Also, the home team has 6 outs to get a win after they shut down the opposition in the top of the 9th, meaning Nate could have batted again in the 11th after LA got stuffed in the 10th.
