Also, how to read the graph.
Reading the Graph:
Upper-left Quadrant = Teams with above average defense and pitching. This is the most desirable quadrant to be in.
Upper-right Quadrant = Teams with above average defense, but below average pitching.
Lower-left Quadrant = Teams with below average defense, but above average pitching.
Lower-right Quadrant = Teams with below average defense and pitching. This is the least desirable quadrant to be in.

Two surprises:
Giants have the best DEFENSE!! WUT!?
Braves have the best pithcing? On second thought they have a good staff

A large portion of our defensive rating is from our OF, which has been very good this year.

And re: Braves pitching
Check out their starters’ FIP
Vaszquez – 2.63
Jurrjens – 3.71
Lowe – 3.77
Hanson – 4.13
Kawakami – 4.58
There really isn’t a below average starter in the group.

I’m guilty of ERAing them (I only see them play on TV against the Phils) and ERA is the only stat they ever use.

I honestly think that the Braves are going to be the team to really worry about in the WC. They are a much better team than the one they rolled out in the first half. Their bullpen kinda sucks, though.
Randy Winn is in time out until his OBP gets back over .330.

It’s not really that suprising given that we’ve got some great defensive players (Ishikawa and the Outfielders) & don’t really have any bad defensive players.

2B has been pretty spotty this year, and now a constant dose of the Velezbian.

I think that he’s mainly going to be an outfielder now that Uribe is healthy.

And I've noticed...
That Velez isn’t that horrible in LF so far.
Velez at 2B is a different story however.

We've got a great combination
Of great OF defense (Winn/Schierhotlz/Rowand/Lewis/Torres/Velez cover as much ground as any OF out there), a large OF, and a flyball pitching staff. That’ll do wonders for your ERA (Mat Cain says hi).

Giants dot is far away from other dots. Giants dot is best.

Question: Is the team UZR in this graph weighted in some way to reflect the number of balls hit to each position, or is it just weighted by innings played among all the defenders?
I’m just finding it hard to believe that a team that uses Edgar Renteria as its everyday shortstop could have the best defense in baseball (even if the outfield is best by a good margin).
by taliesin on Aug 14, 2009 11:59 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
It’s total UZR based on total innings. Our OF has been great and our INF has been pretty good, too. Renteria was an average-ish defender by UZR the last I checked.

It’s total runs saved. I don’t think Renteria is that bad. Ishikawa is fantastic, Sandoval has been fine at 3B, and we’ve generally had pretty OK defense at 2B, so overall that’s a pretty solid IF.
Solid IF defense + great OF defense + large OF + flyball pitching staff = great defense. If not the best in the majors, then definitely in top-5 in my opinion.

The D Back location surprises me a bit. Good Grief did Webb’s injury wreck their season or what.
That’s it! Katie bar the door for this 79 win team is star crossed! And I am loving it.
