Richie was a decent Giant, but this move is way overdue....Now if we can just move Molina out of the 4 hole, I just might think we can do it!!

HE WUZ A GOOD GIANT

I’ll believe it when I see it.

Brian Sabean wants to kick tires. I want to kick Brian Sabean.

Is this official?

If so I agree, it is overdue. However I wouldn’t say “good riddance”. He was a good Giant and deserves a bit more respect.

I’d say Richie has gotten more respect than anyone else on the current team. He’s been useless for the entire season, yet, somehow has made it to August.

I SO agree with this.

I'm thinking but nothing's happening.

+1

I’ll miss his presence when he’s gone. I’ve missed his old performance for quite some time now….

Technically if he is Designated for assignment

He has the option of reporting to AAA, thus giving the Giants a chance to bring him back in September when the roster expands, right?

Don’t hit me.

I don’t think he’d be put back on the 40-man though.

GROUGTHINK ALERT

That would be quite risky knowing that there are about 25 other teams that would jump at the chance to claim him….NOT

Yes, he can give his consent to be outrighted to AAA or AA or A. To do so he’d need to make up his mind fairly quickly since during the 10 days of limbo you need 3 days to be put on and clear waivers.

Honestly, I wouldn’t mind seeing him try to play every day in Fresno (or if he was ballsy and wanted to really help the team, Connecticut) see if he could do better than 2 for 17, get any sort of stroke back, and help the playoff push for the minor league affiliates. After that, sure, the 40 man is such a disaster that adding him back wouldn’t be the worst thing for a month.

He didn’t sound too happy about the playing conditions in the minors before, though.

And despite the black hole of performance this year, he deserves an awful lot more respect than is given him in the title. He was basically the Robby Thompson of the Giants of the early part of this decade – good performer, couple great years, and when the rest of the team was on steroids and surly, he’d be the one guy willing to interact with fans without any ego. Didn’t even try to cut in front of me in line at the team hotel once.

and when the rest of the team was on steroids…

I kinda get the feeling that he may have dipped in the magic sauce for a year or two also…

from the comments of the Schulman story

“The concern about Aurilia’s presence on the roster is nonsensical. You’d think the guy hasn’t produced all year…but, he’s actually 3-for-4 in his last few pinch-hitting appearances. The guy’s never been in a position where he was blocking a young player. He’s a pinch-hitter who plays the corner infield spots and, in an emergency, can play some second base and in a 9-1-1 situation, could go back to shortstop. If Schierholtz is healthy and Uribe can play — Aurilia goes and nobody in the organization thinks twice. If Uribe’s still got the gimpy hamstring…maybe they feel like they need to keep Aurilia awhile. You’d think reading these posts that Aurilia was personally blocking Buster Posey’s path to the big leagues. It wouldn’t kill the club if they sent Whiteside down for another week…kept Aurilia…and waited for Uribe to totally heal so he can play shortstop down the stretch.”

Look, I love Richie, and I hate to see it end this way, but… wow.

LOL! 3-4, with the first of those three coming on July 20th!

And yeah, before that he was… 2-10 in July, 7-30 in June, 9-41 in May, and an astounding 4-24 in April!

Guyz, we NEED his veteran leadership!!! This team can’t make do with the ONLY veterans being Winn, Rowand, Renteria, Molina, Uribe, Johnson, Howry, Affeldt…

I'm thinking but nothing's happening.

3 for 4, + gamertude = 5 for 4 … maybe even 6 for 4 in pinch hitting.

they don’t have to make a 40-man roster move to bring Nate back up, but I guess there’s no other way to send Richie down than to take him off the 40-man roster.

Good Riddance is a little harsh!

But it is time to move – if the last week is truelly the last time in a Giants uniform then I was glad to see him play for so many years.

Good luck and thanks for all the memories!

by OTTOMATIC on Aug 11, 2009 12:56 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Obviously the good riddance referance was in regard to this year play (not to mantion last years too!!)

I blame Richie for not walking away from the game graciously when he knew he was at the end of the road…He tarnished the great image we Giant fans had of him and he cost the team some wins IMHO by blocking better players that could have played in his stead….Of course pumpkinhead Bochy is largely to blame but had Richie just retired we all would have been better off

Aurilia was decent last year. He shouldn’t have been a starting first baseman, but he did okay as a bench player. 2007 and 2009, though, he’s been awful.

Tarnished? Ah, I can’t agree with that. We won’t think much about this year when we’re remembering Richie a few years down the road. When he shows up on the field for some pre-game celebration, we’ll all cheer him just as hard as we would’ve if he’d never returned to the Giants.

I don’t get this jive, either, where fans think they can tell athletes when it’s time to retire. I don’t care what profession, if you are doing a job you enjoy, and you believe you can still do it, and you’re well paid, why the heck would you leave even a minute early? Ask Richie, he’ll tell you he still has another hot streak in him. And he might be right. Who knows?

At any rate, his job is to play, and to do that as best he can. It’s not his job to worry about the makeup of the roster, the lineup, or any of those things that the field and general managers are paid to do. If a GM keeps a guy well past his ability to contribute to the roster, that’s on him, not the player.

Here's an idea...

Fire Shawon Dunston and let Aurilia step in as infield coach.

It’s like pretending to take half a swing.

Okay! Fake bunt practice over! Now, practice making faces at the ump.
