Highlights from the Giants' farm: (a) Buster Posey homered while getting hits in both of his plate appearances; (b) Josh Mazzola also homered while having two hits; and (c) Rafael Rodriguez had four hits, including two doubles.
AAA: Fresno defeated Oklahoma City 6-3
Fresno: LF John Bowker: 1 for 4, HR
Fresno: C Buster Posey: 2 for 2, HR
Oklahoma City: 3B Chris Davis: 2 for 4, HR, SO
Fresno: RHP Ryan Sadowski: 4.0 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 3 K--1 HR, 1 WP
Fresno: RHP Steven Edlefsen: 2.0 IP, 2 H, 3 BB
Fresno: RHP Waldis Joaquin: 2.0 IP, 2 H, 4 K
Posey and Bowker both homered for the Grizzlies. For Posey, it was his 4th HR in his last six games, after going homerless in his his first seventeen PCL games. Posey came out of the game after four innings. Homering for the Rangers' affiliate was Davis. After struggling to a .671 OPS through 258 AB with the Rangers to begin this year, he has an OPS over .900 in 126 AB back in the minors.
In his first start since being sent back to the minors, Sadowski allowed 3 ER in 4.0 IP. He threw just 37 of 69 pitches for strikes. Edlefsen retired just four of nine batters but did not allow a run, improving his ERA to 1.08. Joaquin struck out four of the eight batters he faced.
AA: Connecticut had a scheduled off-day
(Their only remaining off-day is next Monday, August 17.)
A+: San Jose had a scheduled off-day.
(Their two remaining scheduled off-days are August 17 and August 31.)
A-: Augusta lost to Lake County 8-2
Augusta: CF Francisco Peguero: 2 for 4, 2B
Augusta: 1B Josh Mazzola: 2 for 4, HR, SO
Augusta: SS Ehire Adrianza: 1 for 2, 2 BB, E
Augusta: RF James Simmons: 2 for 3, BB
Augusta: RHP Orlando Yntema: 4.0 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 3 BB, 3 K--1 HR
Mazzola had his 14th HR as he continues to be the GreenJackets' offensive leader. Adrianza and Simmons both reached base three times. Adrianza has a .364 AVG over his last ten games. After just one hit in his last two games, Peguero once again had a multi-hit line.
Yntema allowed 5 ER in 4.0 IP in his second Sally League start. Tonight he had an 8/1 GO/FO line.
ssA: Salem-Keizer defeated Vancouver 8-6
(rallying for six runs in the 8th inning)
Salem-Keizer: CF Evan Crawford: 2 for 4, SO, E
Salem-Keizer: 1B Luke Anders: 2 for 4, SO
Salem-Keizer: RHP Javier Hernandez: 4.0 IP, 8 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 3 K
Crawford and Anders each had two of the Volcanoes' nine hits, raising their respective AVGs to .311 and .287.
In his eighth start, Hernandez matched a season high with 8 H while also matching a season low with 4.0 IP (excluding his two relief appearances).
R: Giants defeated Cubs 10-3
Scottsdale: SS Ydwin Villegas: 3 for 4, 2B, SB
Scottsdale: LF Rafael Rodriguez: 4 for 5, 2 2B
Scottsdale: RF Ryan Scoma: 3 for 4, 2B, BB
Scottsdale: RHP Edward Concepcion: 5.2 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 7 K--1 HB
Scottsdale: RHP Jason Stoffel: 1.0 IP, 1 K
Raf-Rod had four hits, including his 6th and 7th doubles. Through his first 100 pro AB, he is hitting .280/.389/.350. Villegas and Scoma each had three hits, raising their AVGs to .321 and .238.
Concepcion continues to have very good peripheral stats despite an ERA close to 5.00. In large part, this has been because he has a .194 BAA with the bases empty but a .329 BAA with runners on base. Tonight he had an 8/1 GO/FO ratio, and his GO/AO ratio for the season is 2.17. Stoffel pitched a perfect 9th inning in his ninth pro appearance.
DSL: Giantes defeated Pirates 9-3
Dominican: LF Jose Lopez: 3 for 5, 3B, 2B
Dominican: LHP Diego De La Cruz: 7.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 2 K--1 WP
Lopez (17.11 y.o.) had three hits, including his 7th double and 1st triple, which got his SLG above .250, but his AVG remains below the Mendoza line. De La Cruz had a career-high 7.0 IP. After scuffling through six relief appearances, he has beed dominant through six starts with 17 H, 10 BB, 2 ER, and 26 K in 32.1 IP.

Oh my God, is a promotion coming ?!?!?!?!

I hadn’t thought of that! After considering the possibility I briefly passed out and upon waking painted the word “Gerald” across my forehead. Then I remembered that we have Bengie Molina and Bruce Bochy is our manager and that there is 0.0% chance that Posey will start at catcher while Molina is here.
Bruce is sensitive to Molina’s feelings.
it'd be kinda cool if he split time at SS/C
but then again renteria is the seasoned veteran SO IDK, DONT HATE ITS JUST AN IDEA

I was thinking this too…but it’ll never happen because it makes too much sense.
Heck, at this point I’d much rather see Frandsen get the bulk of AB’s at SS.
We just traded who for who?!
it doesn’t actually make any sense. They are trying to develop him as a catcher, which takes longer than developing guys at other positions. Having him play SS in MLB is not generally seen as a good way to develop a catcher

He was heralded in college for his ‘versatility’ of sorts, and I see your point, but OH GAWD SS is a damn huge black hole.

While there’s not a single fan here who wouldn’t mind Buster immediately taking over as Giants’ catcher, this is one of the first times in months that Bengie Molina is actually doing something, so don’t expect it to happen.

that whole Zito is about to get called up thing was purely a joke. Clearly he’s not, nor would I actually want him to.

Yeah, just because he gives you his number doesn’t mean you have to call him up.

Well, I’m a Giants fan who doesn’t want Buster starting as Giants’ catcher immediately. But I digress… My highlights:
1. Good to see Evan Crawford get his BA over .300. Could he be the CF we’ve been searching for for years, or do we seek another?
2. RaRod stinging the ball is always welcome news.
3. Steve Edlefsen with 2 walks and no strikeouts? Hmm.
4. Francisco Peguero still looks good.
5. Will SS Ydwin Villegas be the next Ehire Adrianza?
6. Is Buster injured?
Sergio Romo: striking out professional hitters since 2005. And winner of the 2012 NL Fireman of the Year Award!
Crawford is an awful center fielder. He was only credited with one error but he should have had a second but because he took 3 steps back prior to running full tilt forward just in time to have the ball drop in front of him (he actually ran past it) on a shallow pop up that he never touched.
He showed no arm at all on a throw to home and has had horrible routes and terrible positioning out there. The positioning could be coaching related but at this point I seriously miss Peguero and would rather have Curry out there on defense.
He is very fast and a nice guy so he has that going for him.

I hereby cease and will desist my interest in one Evan Crawford.

He’s a good athlete, and with coaching could improve defensively. But he’s a 21 year old in rookie ball, who had no power in college. Peguero’s probably a better prospect, but they’re both years away.
What can you tell us about Benusa? His HS stats were insane, suggesting that perhaps the level of competition in Class A HS ball in Western Pennsylvania may not have been of the highest quality.

Casilla predominantly works off of his nasty eephus pitch, but he has tremendous movement on all of his his pitches due to his webbed fingers. He’s been pitching since 1917 so his spit ball has a legal exemption. As an added bonus he throws behind his back for added deception.

Nice to see Joaquin getting strikeouts in AAA. It is nice to see a pitching prospect or two at AAA – for years the Fresno club had mostly AAAA players in the field and an occasional pitching prospect – now there are several prospects in the field – well at least Gerald, Ryan, John, Jesus – and mostly AAAA on the mound. With the additions of Edfelson and Joaquin are we seeing some of the future of the Big Leage pen?
I was just looking at BA’s Top 100 prospects listing from last year. The top 10:
1) Matt Wieters
2) David Price
3) Colby Rasmus
4) Tommy Hamson
5) Jason Heyward
6) Travis Snider
7) Brett Anderson
8) Cameron Maybin
9) Madison Bumgarner
10) Neftali Feliz
Wieters, Price, Rasmus, Hanson, and Anderson won’t be eligible anymore. Maybin and Snider have lost ground due to unsuccessful stints in the majors.
Strasburg is definitely #1 if he signs, but I’m thinking Bumgarner and Posey have to be top 5 guys at this point. Am I being a homer?

I think the top 5 will be something like
[Strasburg]
Heyward
Smoak
Posey
Bumgarner
Matt Cain: He'll save children, but not the Dodger children.
PABLO SANDOVAL AM STEAL DEATH, DESTROYER OF WORLDS.
The other guy who comes to mind as potentially belonging in the top 5 is Brian Matusz. He was really dominant in high-A and AA this year before his call-up.
Brian Sabean wants to kick tires. I want to kick Brian Sabean.

Including Strasburg but not Chapman, I’d guess BA’s Top 5 goes something like:
1. Strasburg
2. Heyward
3. Stanton
4. Posey
5. Bumgarner
I wouldn’t be surprised to see Tilman, Montero and/or Smoak in the top 5.

I haven’t been following him, but it also looks like he’s stalled a bit in the Southern League. .235 / .317 / .460 in about 250 at bats.

His K% has always been ridiculous though http://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=pa207005&position=OF
Baseball America kind of sort of answered that question with their midseason top 25 list:
1. Jason Heyward, of, Braves
2. Mike Stanton, of, Marlins
3. Jesus Montero, c, Yankees
4. Justin Smoak, 1b, Rangers
5. Madison Bumgarner, lhp, Giants
6. Buster Posey, c, Giants
by FluLikeSymptoms on Aug 11, 2009 2:11 PM PDT up reply actions
Looks like that list is from early July – Smoak might have fallen a bit since then, since he’s been hurt.
Also, looking at Minor League Splits, he has a BABIP of almost .400. In June, his best month, it was over .450. Wow.
Montero vs. Posey is a judgement call – I’d rather have Posey, but again, maybe I’m a homer.
Brian Sabean wants to kick tires. I want to kick Brian Sabean.
Adopted Giant: Fred "OBP and UZR, Dammit!" Lewis
It sounds like a move to 1B is inevitable for Montero. That would be fine but I don’t think anybody but Tiexeira is going to play 1B for the yankees for the next 8 years. If he has to be a DH, that would really hurt his value.
I agree, I would take Posey over Montero. Montero is a great hitter but there is nobody (other than a few delusional Yankee fans) who thinks he can be a MLB catcher.
I would put Posey over Smoak too. Posey was universally considered the better prospect of the two coming into the draft and since then they have both been great in pro ball but I don’t see any reason to change the original ranking
