I just go back to the origins of the word and other uses for it. Like my beloved bassoon is fagoto in Italian, because it’s made of wood. Hee.

It helps when people are so abjectly stupid, to turn it around like that.

I remember O got a bit of a hand slap on MCC when I posted a despair like poster about retards. It was generally excepted as funny but sometimes that word goes to far.

by scout6 on Aug 10, 2009 8:15 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, I’m not over-sensitive about it, but I hate when people say you “can” say retard but you “can’t” say fag. Seems a little hypocrtical

by gvp914 on Aug 10, 2009 8:17 PM PDT up reply actions

Not at all

To say that something is retarded is implying that it is “slow.” That it is not exactly the smartest thing. This is, unfortunately, the case with those who are referred to as retarded. It’s not used to denegrate “retarded” people. It’s a lot like calling someone a sissy.

On the other hand, gay people are normal in every way, except their sexual orientation. To use that as an insult is in fact denegrating those people.

by thehavenot on Aug 10, 2009 8:22 PM PDT up reply actions

Not really, I disagree

That’s like saying “fag” means a pile of sticks, so it’s just a silly word that shouldn’t be taken seriously. People who use the word "retard’ virtually never mean it by its medical definition.

It has to do with connotation. Both "retard’ and “fag” are generally used to have the same kind of meaning: bad, stupid, etc.

Most people who know/care about somebody that is developmentally delayed or handicapped (whether it was genetic or caused by an accident, etc.) wouldn’t be crazy about the word “retard” applied to that person. Even if one were to insist it didn’t have “degenerative” implications. That has less to do with what is PC or what the word “really” means, but more to do with how people use the word.
