Around SBN: Ellenberger vs. Sanchez Heats Up, Hughes Talks Retirement

Guzman is batting .317, but he is owed 8 mil for this eyar and next. He is only 31 and is a big step up from Rent.

God, I hate Renteria.

Guzman

is an improvement, but he hits an empty .317. He’s an improvement, but 30 million between those 2 is not happening.

Praying that Tim Alderson doesn't come back to bite us

Wow

Renteria is hitting .197/.254/.242 since the All Star break.

At this point, I’m hoping there are 500 bone fragments in that injured elbow.

The way he's hitting

that’s his only logical excuse.

I’m surprised he’s hit anything at all.

Arroyo and Harang both seem like guys who would do a whole lot better here than in Cincy. I doubt this kind of move is likely with Martinez, Pucetas, and Ortiz fighting for that 5th spot already though.

Not going after Harang or Guzman is leaving wins on the table. I guess we’ll find out whether the Giants really want to win this thing.

I like Harang, but how much are we going to invest in 2009?

Even if they are “going for it,” it seems like a massive waste of resources to procure another expensive pitcher. Unless we can figure a way to get rid of Zito, I don’t see where Harang would fit beyond this season. Maybe if we could trade Sanchez for him and get something else back, but that would have to wait until the offseason (Sanchez won’t clear waivers) and that defeats the purpose of acquiring him.

Harang is only signed for one more season, so it’s not like we’d be stuck with him long term. We’re probably going to need a 5th starter next year anyway, so he would serve a purpose for both this year and next year.

Bumgarner is free

Just saying. I’m sure that the Giants could find a better use for ~18M (Harang’s 2010 salary + 2011 buyout + guesstimate of remaining 2009 salary), whether or not Bumgarner is ready to start next April.

Also, the option becomes mutual and jumps to 14M if he’s trade. I’m not sure if it means that either party can exercise it or either party can reject it.

I don’t think he’s going to be ready at the beginning of the year, and I don’t think they can find better use for that money. I think they spend it on somebody sucky.

by superk1ng on Aug 10, 2009 5:06 PM PDT up reply actions

You think Harang is good because he beat us yesterday? That was his first win in three months. I know he’s had tough luck but I would rather take all that money out on the FA market and not have it tied down with Harang.

I think he’s good because he’s put up 4 or 5 WAR in 3 of the last 4 seasons.

by superk1ng on Aug 10, 2009 7:06 PM PDT up reply actions

yeah, but you don’t want to take on a contract like that coming off of a bad year though. Ask Sabean about Edgar Renteria.

Well i can see Harrang fitting it fine as we need another SP this year and next. But he’s due a lot of money so i can understand why we’d want to steer clear of him. Perhaps we’ll explore a trade if the Reds are willing to kick in some money.

It’s hard to believe that the Giants went into the season with Renteria as the only option at short.

I felt coming out of spring training that they needed to keep Frandsen and Burriss up to platoon at 2nd, but also to give each some MLB at bats and PT at Short to back up Edgar in case of him sucking or getting injured.

by Fresburg on Aug 10, 2009 4:31 PM PDT reply actions

They had Uribe, I suppose

But, as we have seen, it would have been exceedingly difficult bordering on impossible for Renteria to play himself out of the lineup. As the venerable case of Edgardo Alfonzo vs. Pedro Feliz suggests, the Giants tend to manage with their pocketbook.

I don't disagree completely

but Uribe has had a hamstring injury and when he’s healthy he’s going to get a lot of playing time. I hope.

Aubrey Huff also cleared waivers

why’d we trade for garko… we could probably have gotten Huff for less.

What? Aubrey is a great name for a boy… if you want him to grow up to be a Colonel in the Confederate army.

Because Huff is awful? He’s been sub-replacement level this year so i don’t see why we’d have wanted him.
