Postgame fun: Lincecum, Wilson shut out the Phils

This game was an excellent pitcher's duel. Joe Blanton has been fantastic over the past month. However, unfortunately for the Phillies, Lincecum has been even more dominant.

Star-divide

Inexplicably, the Giants managed to score a couple runs thanks to the most exciting play in baseball - the sac fly. My pulse throbs just thinking about it. Anyway, this was a good win, but of course, they all are.

I’m not going to the game, but a friend who is a Phillies fan (and also good friends with Jimmy Rollins, apparently, as he gave them the tickets) is getting one for me :D

Whack job
Personal beliefs

Daulton holds a series of beliefs related to conspiracies, metaphysics, and numerology. He maintains that the universe is created and sustained by numerical synchronicities, and that all matter is charged with vibrational energy, which has escaped human perception because it is extradimensional in origin. He believes that those who are conscious of this energy can manipulate it to affect reality in different ways, such as altering the weather. He also believes that the pyramids and Mayan temples were created by a lost civilization, and that people with knowledge of the workings of the system will “ascend” at the conclusion of the Mayan calendar on Dec. 21, 2012, at 11:11 a.m. (Greenwich Mean Time), vanishing into a new plane of existence. 5 He recently claimed in a televised interview with ESPN that he has “skipped through time” and undergone “astral travel” and will “blast into space.”

Daulton has authored a book on metaphysics and numerology, titled “If They Only Knew,” published in 2007. In the book he discusses numerous aspects of metaphysics, referencing experts in the field, and his personal experiences.

My Giants luck seems to be cyclical. From 1999-2003, they were like 18-2 in games I went to. Then, from 2004-2007, they were something like 1-6. 6-2 the last two years.

Of course, that mostly corresponds with good and bad periods in recent Giants history – but more so.

a couple fun facts

-Giants have a league leading 15 shutouts(on pace for about 24), the next closest is 9

-Lincecum is on pace for 298 strikeouts giving him a realistic possibility of reaching 300 K. I believe the last time that was accomplished was in 2002 when both Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling both had over 300 K.

-Lincecum should pass Greinke in WAR after todays performance

after the call I told the tix office employee at tonights game that my friend needed a fork
She told me that if she needed a fork, then you have to eat it later

I went

The ceremony was A+. They had some old timers there, like Dave Stewart and Jesse Barfield. They had a red carpet for Rickey and a golden base at second for him to “steal” They presented him with a crystal figure of Rickey in his famous pose with the base victoriously held over his head, and a special framed jersey with a photo of him. Fireworks, a motorcade with classic cars, and his mom giving him a bouquet and a big hug completed the scene. Rickey’s speech was great. He deferred praise to the fans and said he was so very humbled. But he pulled the old “Rickey is…” third person stuff. We loved it. I love him. Thank you, Rickey, for being one of the greatest.

We thought he was going to run down the red carpet and slide into the golden base. But he was wearing a really nice suit.

The game was garbage, though. And I had some chicken there so spicy it brought tears to my eyes. I couldn’t finish it. it was delicious but omfg too hot.

On MLB network right after the game

They were breaking down the pitch that struck out Howard in the 8th inning. I found it very interesting.

That pitch was called a slider on TV by Kruk and Kuip, it is the familiar changeup we’ve seen from Timmy except it was registered at 86 MPH, which is slightly higher than his “normal” changeup.

Joe Magrane and Mitch Williams broke it down and this was interesting because Joe called that pitch a slider, not a changeup. He mentioned that most great pitchers (even though mechanically speaking it is a no-no) throws across their body as it is the only way to generate enough “break” on the slider or split finger. He goes on and say that Lincecum is able to release the ball from a over the top angle (a la his fastball), yet still generate enough spin on the slider (by throwing it straight down) so instead of breaking sideway, it breaks straight down.

This is interesting because what he’s saying is that Timmy has 3 pitches, all releasing from the same angle (over the top) and all look the same to the hitter. Fastball, Changeup, and Slider. They come at the hitter with 3 different speed and 3 different breaks, all of them top to bottom.

No wonder that change up is so devastating.

by jctGamer on Aug 2, 2009 12:21 AM PDT reply actions

sorry, the pitch was called a “changeup” by kruk and Kuip, not slider.

by jctGamer on Aug 2, 2009 12:21 AM PDT up reply actions

The movement took it away from Howard, so I would guess it was his change/split thing that he calls the changeup.

Winn’s the worst hitter against lefties in about 100 ABs this year. That defies his entire career track record to this point. While it’s possible that he’s fallen off a cliff from the right side and will never recover, Fred has never really shown himself to be all that great against lefties either. Couple that with Winn’s better defense, and I have no problem with Winn playing and batting 7th today.

by Mike Benjamin Hit King on Aug 2, 2009 12:07 PM PDT up reply actions

I am aware of the SSS implications. I don’t have a big problem with Randy playing, but he shouldn’t be batting any higher than seventh and I would like to see someone else get some ABs against lefties this year. Randy’s recent ABs from the right side have been horrific and do not inspire confidence that he will be turning it around soon.

Doesn't look like anyone has posted this yet

The Giants indeed optioned starter Ryan Sadowski and first baseman Jesus Guzman to Triple-A Fresno to clear room for right-handed reliever Waldis Joaquin, who was promoted from Double-A Connecticut, and Freddy Sanchez, who formally joined the team.

The Giants have been blowing through their bullpen during this stretch of 20 games without a day off, which ends Wednesday, and felt they needed another reliever. Joaquin impressed the brass in spring training and was throwing well for the Defenders. The Giants will use their seventh starter of the season in Houston on Wednesday. It will NOT be Madison Bumgarner, Bochy said. Joe Martinez and Kevin Pucetas are options.

The era of Sadowski appears to be over, alas.

Who seems most likely to come up? Has Pucetas been pitching well?
