2 Giants in top 10 BA Midseason Top 25 Prospects
Baseball America's Midseason Top 25 Prospects are out, and the Giants have two in the top ten, plus the first of the honorable mentions:
Top 25 Prospects
...
5. Madison Bumgarner, lhp, Giants
6. Buster Posey, c, Giants
The Next 25: Tim Alderson, rhp, Giants...
Me, I put Posey above Bumgarner, but since BA are the authorities here, not I, I should really defer to them. naturally, deferring to BA feels a smidge better when they agree with me on the consensus top prospect out there. Whom, I shall never tire of reminding folks here, I wanted to draft instead of Bumgarner back in 2007.
Having the #5 and #26 prospects in all of baseball is a very nice thing. But wouldn't it be nice to have the #1 overall and a legitimate major-league starter instead?
It would, I posit, have been very nice indeed.
I told you so.

that's what the GOP said about George W. Bush and 2000
How did “getting over” that end up working out? I seem to have forgotten.
Man, I didn’t think you could get more ridiculous than your last “WE SHOULD HAVE TAKEN HEYWARD AND PORCELLO” post but this takes the cake.

When it's all said and done, America will be remembered for three things: The Bill of Rights, jazz, and baseball.
he’s still in the bigs at a ridiculously young age in the AL.
Anyone who (all things being equal) would prefer Alderson to Porcello is clearly wearing their homer glasses. However, given the demands Porcello had out of HS and our high amount of picks that year, I don’t mind at all that we took Alderson and he’s a helluva GD prospect we’re all happy with. I understand you’re just trying to bring wcw off his high horse, but Porcello is still a stud, but that’s what almost everyone thought in 2007 as well
by NeifiChicken on Jul 9, 2009 10:45 AM PDT up reply actions
but I do agree, he shouldn’t be in the bigs, they were waaaay too aggressive

I think Porcello is a good prospect. I would love for the Giants to have him. I also think he’s only in the bigs at this age because the Tigers were desperate for starters last year.
Saying he’s a legitimate big league starter and ignoring the fact that his peripherals are continuing on the utterly uninspiring track they were on last year is not really being honest. He’s not major league ready.

the data indicate his FB is major-league quality
his curve not so much, but the fastball alone strikes me as making him ‘legitimate’
doesn’t that suggest he needs to refine his breaking ball in, I don’t know, the minors?
The guy will be a stud, perhaps even the next Roy Hallday (who is the best SP in baseball, although our guy can make a good case as well) but he’s not there yet
by NeifiChicken on Jul 9, 2009 10:53 AM PDT up reply actions
maybe
I can see the argument for keeping a guy in the minor leagues if he’s not pitching regularly in the majors, but Porcello is. I can see the argument that repeatedly getting shelled does nothing for your development, but Porcello isn’t.
I never said he was or would be Halladay. I said he was already a legitimate major-league pitcher, and I think that’s true. Not very good yet, but not embarrassing himself.
Be honest with yourself though – if it wasn’t someone who you were invested in proving the awesomeness of, would you really be that impressed with a guy who’s got a 5 FIP and a K-rate under 5? 20 or not, those just aren’t very good numbers. He’s a legit major league starter right now, sure, but I’d say he’s a legit 4/5 starter, not a legit 2 or 3.
Bumgarner is currently putting up pretty good numbers in AA – his MLE FIP is 4.50. Who’s to say he couldn’t come up and put up around the same performance that Porcello’s doing right now? What kind of numbers would Porcello be putting up if he was in AA? I know it’s a big jump from A+ to the majors, but you have to be a bit concerned by the fact that his career strikeout rate is 4.9 in the majors and 5.2 in the minors so far.
Matt Cain: He'll save children, but not the Dodger children.
PABLO SANDOVAL AM STEAL DEATH, DESTROYER OF WORLDS.
at the moment legitimate rotation filler only
that’s enough, I think, at his age. I’m more concerned that his GB% is ‘only’ in the 50s right now, since his calling card if he succeeds will be 60+% grounder rates.
and your choice is not Bumgarner or Porcello, it’s Alderson + one year of Renteria’s salary or Porcello. I take Porcello.
and if I'm being completely honest...
I know he’s a very well liked prospect and is ranked highly, but I’m still not particularly impressed with anything he’s done so far in his professional career. Like, I think he’ll probably have a good major league career, but I don’t see much to indicate future ace or once-in-a-lifetime prospect like people were saying he was before the draft.

I don’t understand your need to let everyone know:
“I told you so.”
Even under the assumption you’re right and people will recognize it, what validation do you get out of that? Because you were right on one decision means…we should respect your opinion more or something? For all we know you don’t know anything about scouting prospects and just happened to get lucky on this call? So…I just don’t see the point of all of this.

Who is to say we could’ve developed him into what he has become?
The Giants (although that could be changing) hadn’t developed any hitters at all at the time and yet we had been able to draft and develop pitchers well.
There’s a decent chance Heyward would not be doing as well had he been with SF

O’s fans gotta be really excited about their prospects right now. Tillman and Matusz at 8 & 9 with Arieta not far behind. If those guys can develop into solid pitchers with all the young hitters they’ve developed the last three years they could legitimately start to dream about being a competitive team in the AL East in a few years time.
I’m glad because it’s really a smart fanbase that’s been completely pounded into submission by 20 years of incompetent management.

Do people come on here actually looking for approval for their baseball 'knowledge'?
i thought that’s what fantasy baseball is for.
You're not right because you're not realistic
You can’t take Porcello with the 19th pick and pay him more than Heward with the 10th. Why would Heyward’s agent ever accept that idea? What would have happened is that they never would have gotten Porcello signed and we wouldn’t have Alderson. Has any team EVER paid a second first rounder more than the first?
Ad quibbling between Heyward and Bumgarner is just a poor way to be a fan. Basically seems like you’d rather Bumgarner fail and be right than succeed and be wrong.
I’m endlessly amused that wcw is so adamant about his shadow drafted players when he complained so loudly about the Giants passing up Chris Parmalee for Tim Lincecum:
