Organization Prospect Depth Chart: Catcher

Winning teams are consistently strong up the middle defensively.  While the SF Giants have few if any top SS and CF prospects the position of catcher can soon be manned by a perennial All-Star in Gerald (Buster) Posey. Be patient Giants brass and do not rush him.

AA Connecticut Defenders

2.  Jackson Williams   AA

Hector Sanchez??

I know he’s been playing 1B, but I think his primary position is catcher.

Hector Sanchez

I’m not sure about his defense, but he’s a switch hitter with some pop in his bat. He’s 19 in the AZL. Not sure what to make of his DSL numbers last year, but they were good. He’s definitely one to watch.

Thomas Joseph

obviously, he’s not signed yet, and there’s a question about whether he can stick at catcher, but hopefully the Giants will leave him there as long as possible to see if he could….assuming he signs.

Where are your lists?

Comments are welcome but where are your lists?

by wilriv21 on Jul 7, 2009 1:32 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

It’s Posey then everyone else, though Jacks appears to have big league ready defense, and a bat that screams late inning defensive replacement, but he’s probably 2nd. After that, Sanchez, Monell, LaTorre, Klimas and Adam Witter (if he’s even a catcher any more) can be in any order you like.

That cannot be true. Some have name Sanchez, Joseph and Witter – catchers I have omitted. A lot of posters follow the farm.

Yeah, I can’t say any of Wil’s names were very mysterious. Mysterious might be, for example, his inclusion of Matt Klimas (who’s been in the organization for parts of 4 seasons and has yet to see San Jose) at #3. Mysterious or sad, whichever.

Their website blows, it’s almost like disinformation. I’ll look around when they’re back in town next week.

David is doing good, his arm feels good and he seems to be pitching well. 2 innings last night he faced 7 batters with 3 k’s and a walk. The other 3 were fly ball outs. Fastball is running 88-90 and he also throws a slider and a circle change. Made the hitters look a bit silly last night. I’m kinda wondering if he’ll be here the whole season.

Sadly, the pitchers aren’t in charge of personnel, and I think we can all tell who the men in charge like best.

la Torre

I heard that “insider” comment last yr too, that the San Jose pitchers really liked having LaTorre catch them.
Offensively, he has quietly trumped JaxWms:
AB RBI Ave OBP SLG OPS
LaT 110 17 282 392 364 756
JxW 162 13 222 314 309 622

Interesting. I wonder if LaTorre is as good defensively as Jackson is? Or maybe his defense is why he is preferred!

by Squire_Boone on Jul 7, 2009 4:19 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions   0 recs

My observation is LaTorre has less passed balls than Jacks. Jacks has a better arm and a quicker release on a steal. Seems to me that when LaTorre makes contact when hitting he hits more line drives but that’s totally anecdotal on my part. I’m sure someone more in tune with stats can prove or disprove my opinion.

The Giants have pretty good depth at this position, each team seems to have at least one pretty solid prospect/near prospect behind the dish, other than Fresno, but they have Steve Holm who seems to be a serviceable journeyman backup type guy, though he didn’t have the best defense.

Bonds stands alone.

I saw Grizzlies at River Cats the other nite, and Holm was totally lost batting, both against RHP and LHP. He has always had that vicious swing and a low contact rate. At AAA and at the bigs it is getting exploited.

So I doubt Steve gets more than a handful of ABs with the big team ever again. Somebody said the staff liked him last year for paying attention to the games so he was competent if he caught an inning or 2.

My list of those who are going to catch significant innings next 5 years, say…
Pablo and Posey as starters,
La Torre as main backup, and also Jax Wms plus Whiteside again in 2010.
Hector Sanchez is my longshot tho I know little about him.
Still I will not abandon my adoptee

I think Holm is now on the GROD career track: he only gets back to the majors if someone gets seriously hurt.

I didn’t mean to imply that Holm was a prospect of any sorts, just mentioning him as someone in the org who has seen major league time behind the dish. You’re right that he’s basically an organizational player at this point.

In a sense, though, your interpretation is much more in line with an “organizational depth chart.” I think most of us have answered these posts as if Wil was asking for an “organizational prospect chart” but that’s not really what a depth chart is. If somehow Molina, Whiteside, and Sandoval all became unavailable after some tragic pepper game, would Posey really be the catcher the team brought up to start at Catcher, or would Holm? Probably Holm, which would suggest that he’s truly higher on the depth chart, though, naturally not the prospect list.

Seems mostly to be a rehab assignment waiting to happen.

I don’t think he played C at all in SJ this year, and Buster’s DH’d and off days enough for him to sneak in a game or too. He either played DH or 1B, so I assume his various injuries have pretty much curtailed his Catching career, for this year at least.

I thought Witter’s catching career was over as well, but then I noticed he caught a game the other day. I think that was the first time this year.

I like Monell as a hitter, but my understanding is that he’s had enough arm/shoulder problems that he’ll never be a ML catcher.

Obviously Posey is the top guy, but I wouldn’t be surprised if in a couple years he gets moved to 2B similar to Biggio. I think Posey’s bat will just be too valuable to miss a game a week like most catchers do and not be worn down by the end of each season.

Joseph will start as a catcher and hopefully stay there and be the catcher to help move Posey to another position at least. Joseph has actually been a catcher while in HS, while Posey didn’t start do it until after his freshmen year in college, so there’s hope for Joseph to be a catcher.

Jackson Williams just can’t hit. Sure, it’s possible he could stick as a backup, but that’s about all I see with him.

Much more is needed to be seen with Sanchez. Looks like he has a good bat, but whether he stays at catcher defensively, remains to be seen.

The rest of the catching prospects are backup types at best at this point in time and even that is being optimistic.
