His FIP is still pretty damn good (3.07).

That’s more than double his ERA, and it’s mostly the result of a fluky HR rate – his K and BB numbers are closer to his career averages than to his great 2008. I’m fine with keeping him, but I’m hoping some contending team starts having bullpen problem, overreacts, and overpays for him.

I’m aware. I’d still trade him for a good hitting prospect above A+.

excuse my language, but can I watch my fucking baseball team attempt to win baseball games without worrying about their best players being traded away? Wonder what we can get for Lincecum and Sandoval. We should really sell high, Lincecum might get hurt one day.

Best players? Affeldt barely cracks the top ten. He is nowhere nearly as good as you think he is, and relievers are overrated anyway. Seriously, you can’t run a team if you freak out over the idea of your third best reliever being traded away.

Look, though – you trade Affeldt THIS YEAR and all of a sudden, the strong back end of the bullpen is a bit weaker. Your top choices for lefty reliever in the pen are Sanchez and Hinshaw (nooooooo). Maybe if you could make a concurrent trade for a good LOOGY-type to replace him, it’d make sense but trading Affeldt right now seems like the kind of trade that makes sense in a vacuum but would be inadvisable to do in the middle of the season where the Giants are contending and a good (maybe overperforming but good) bullpen is a decent part of the reason.
Plus, I seriously doubt we could get a good hitting prospect above A+ for him anyway.

he’s doubled his GB rate. Maybe that will regress a little, but maybe his walk rate will decline too.
I think relievers pitch so few innings that putting a whole lot of stock in a half season of peripherals is a little silly. And really, if Affeldt reverts to being a 3 ERA reliever during a contention run, that’s still pretty valuable, considering how easy it is to end up with a sub replacement level performance from a free bullpen pickup.
Randy Winn is in time out until his OBP gets back over .330.

Wow, I hadn’t noticed that about his GB%. Not just this year, it’s been improving form the second he got to the majors, which is very rare. He’s become the best GB pitcher in the majors. That’s pretty weird. But, regarding this:
I think relievers pitch so few innings that putting a whole lot of stock in a half season of peripherals is a little silly
That’s exactly the thing with Affeldt. It’s not like he has a proven track record – he’d been mediocre for a long time before 2008, then had one great year, and now he’s back to looking like he did before, ERA aside. Except for the GB thing. If that’s for real than he hasn’t been as lucky as I thought. Man, that’s just weird.
Anyway, I’m not saying we should get rid of him, I just think that we have a good chance to get a team to overpay. He’s still only our 3rd best reliever, so he really shouldn’t be untouchable, even for a contending team.

I think you’re overestimating the ability to “sell high” on a reliever. While someone like Affelt has an incredibly high value to his team (especially one like the Giants), GM’s generally don’t make headlines selling off top prospects or position players for late inning relief specialists. Even when they sell off mid-level prospects they’re subject to some heavy criticism (see Mike Stanton).
The urge to trade team strength from a winning team in the hopes of getting a quick fix in an area of weakness seems like fools gold. It seems to me that the art assembling a good bullpen is projecting which free agents are at the peaks of their careers and locking them up for two years. Trading Affelt now may mean that we miss out on the second half of his career year.
Another thing to think about, Affelt just signed a two year contract and moved his family to San Francisco. Do you think other free agents would be hesitant to sign with Giants knowing they might be traded in six months, because they were performing too well?

My friend who’s a Yankees fan jokingly asked if they could borrow Affeldt. I said sure….for Cano and Nady. :D

Nady probably wouldn’t be a good pickup since he’s injured,

As far as I’m concerned, they can have Affeldt for free. They just have to take Zito with him.

Affeldt is the closest thing we have to a sure thing in the bullpen. Romo is not ready to assume the closer position should Wilson continue to implode. Affeldt has great composure on the mound. Dude throws strikes and to trade him would do the Giants none good.

He is awesome
I am really surprised he hasnt been mentioned in trade talks. Probably because we are in contention.
