Organization Prospect Depth Chart: Shortstop
The shortstop position is thought as the most important defensive position in baseball. Currently the SF Giants have Edgar Renteria as their starting shortstop. Renteria is under contract through the 2010 season with a team option for the 2011 season. The Giants will have a new shortstop in 2011. Who? My favorite candidate would be Elvis Andrus. Ain't gonna happen. I know. But what prospects do the Giants have?
My top organization prospect shortstops:
1. Ehire Adrianza A
2. Brandon Crawford AA
3. Brian Bocock A+
Who are your top SF Giants shortstop prospects?

I wouldn’t do it, but it isn’t out of the question.
Adrianza’s glove is consistently considered fantastic, whereas Crawford is considered ‘good’.
Crawford’s bat is still high risk, high reward, and it is quite possible that his contact problems could preclude him from being a useful MLB player.
Adrianza, while further away obviously, has a tool set that should allow his current MiLB stats to carry over more than a MLE would suggest. He’s fairly consistent with contact, and has a little bit of pop. He doesn’t have anywhere near the offensive ceiling of Crawford (though his floor is likely higher), but he doesn’t have to, considering his defense.
I’d still have Crawford over Adrianza, simply because of proximity and offensive potential, but I probably like Adrianza better as a prospect.

his defense is supposed to be godly
if he learns hit even a little, he’d be ridiculously valuable

I think Burriss and Frandsen each have a better chance of being the starting shortstop in 2011 than Bocock does.

How? The organization seems to have completely dumped the idea of Burriss as a SS. He hasn’t seen an inning there this year, to my knowledge, minors and even ST included. And Frandsen, well they just don’t seem to be that into him, sad to say.

Agreed
But I still like either of their chances better than the guy who’s back in single-A at age 24 after being unable to hit AA pitching and currently hitting just .246/.287/.348 at the lower level.

Yeah, it’s far more likely that the Giants’ brain trust will be let go and replaced with fanatical Burrisstas than that Bocock will make his way back to the big leagues.

Schoop seems to have moved to the utilityman track this season. He’s split time fairly evenly between 2B, 3B, and SS.

Its not all that bad. Two legit prospects along with two possibly fringe starter/role players in Burriss and Frandsen, isn’t a bad place to be. It probably places us middle of the pack, SS depth wise.

Jhonny Peralta?
I saw on MLBTR that he was made available. His bat is plus for that position, but his defense looks pretty average.
SS Peralta and 2B Renteria sounds a whole lot better than SS Renteria and 2B Uribe.

We’ve certainly done our part over the last 25 years to reinforce that perception, haven’t we? I’m trying to think (off the top of my head) of the best SS or CF we’ve drafted and developed in that time. Chris Speier is too long ago. I guess Royce Clayton is about it. Wow.
Can anyone think of any others?

I was going to say Chili Davis for CF then I realized that was almost 30 years ago.
Maybe Aurilia at SS. Clayton had all kinds of talent but he didn’t seem to have the stay power of Aurilia on the MLB level. Either way that is …. ( Air guitar moment to Led Zep Whole Lot of Love) a whole lot of fail.

Royce Clayton had a 17 year career (that just ended two years ago). Richie’s currently in his 13th major league season (and I don’t even want think about him making it to 17).
Anyway, we definitely didn’t draft him and I’m not sure you could say we really developed him either as he was already 23 and had completed a full season in AA when we traded for him. He made his major league debut during his first season in our system.
As for CF, let’s not forget Dan Gladden!

Yes, I can’t complain if you want to choose Clayton over Richie. Clayton’s first couple years were really promising and he looked like he might have been on the verge of being something special. In hind sight though I think his up and down years would have driven me nuts (beyond of reasonable expectations) if he had remained aGiants for most of them. At least when Richie lost it at SS it was over for him at SS. For some reason that is easier for me to handle.

what about Julio Izturis?
I know he’s been playing mostly 2b this year, but when the Giants signed him, he was regarded as a SS.
by barry100 on Jul 7, 2009 11:06 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
It’s true, Minor Izturis played quite a bit of SS in the DSL the last few years. It’s pretty hard to get a read on him yet, though I like what I’ve seen in the AZL so far.
Still I think you pretty much have to go
Crawford,
Burriss,
Adrianza
Bocock
