Sandoval gets the shaft.
Pablo deserves to be an all-star this year and he was not named to the team. I hope somebody gets injured so Sandoval could make it on the team. MLB really needs to stop with the fans selecting the starting line ups because I'm so sick of seeing undeserving players go to the game. I know the game is "meaningless" but it's still nice to see your own guys out there. He definitely deserves it even if he is in his first full season. He is carrying our team offensively and this is a huge disappointment for Giants fans.

by i did my job on Jul 5, 2009 4:36 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Their numbers this year are pretty close to identical. Hill has a higher AVG, but Kinsler walks more, so they have almost the same OBP, as well as almost the same SLG and home runs. They’ve both struck out about 50 times in about 370 PAs. They both appear to be solid defensively.
Hill probably got the edge because he’s the one having an unexpectedly good year – his OPS is up almost 150 from last year. Whereas Kinsler’s has fallen about 60 points from last year (and, for the unwashed masses, his AVG has fallen especially far compare to last year).
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that pie > cake, that Bochy is endowed by his creator with certain undeniable traits, that among these are veteran man-love, a gigantic skull, and the pursuit of the double switch.

Blaming the fans for electing a superstar like David Wright is a little misguided. The guy is is a 3-time All-Star and 2-time gold glove winner. With his body of work and the stellar season he’s having, there’s no reason to think Pablo was “robbed” because the fans had a vote.
I would have liked Pablo as a reserve, but Zimmerman’s a good player and the rules are what they are about every team being represented.
I hope Pablo is voted in for the “final spot”:
PLAYER TEAM POS AVG AB HR RBI SB
Cristian Guzman WSH SS .316 285 3 21 1
Matt Kemp LAD OF .303 297 10 44 19
Mark Reynolds ARI 3B .269 297 23 58 13

I’m completely aware that this is a Giants fan post, but contending that the fans “shafted” Pablo because they voted for a true superstar instead of an a player most fans had never heard of before this year is absurd.
I REALLY hope Pablo makes it. He’s my favorite Giant, but that’s not the point. The fans chose Wright, a bonfire star, an excellent decorated player who’s having a great year. (His and Pablo’s numbers are pretty similar; Pablo is slugging more, but Wright has a better OBP.)

no arguments on Wright’s talents, but definitely on his Gold Gloves. He gets those because of his hitting. The year he beat out Feliz for the GG was a joke. Even Mets’ fans will tell you that he’s an overrated defender. As for the voting, let’s face it, like the GG, you win that on name. I disagree
Show me where that’s MLB’s written policy and I’ll believe you. I don’t think that’s ever been baseball’s intention, but rather to showcase the “stars” and therefore, the game.
If it were just the best players for that season, why would they let players, fans and managers pick the players? Shouldn’t they let a computer pick them?
By your logic, Cal Ripken wouldn’t have been on the 2005 AL team, which would have robbed baseball of a great moment.

So what’s the harm in letting the fans be a part of the game? Is it really that bad that they pick real stars instead of three-month stars?

and
i feel like if sandoval was higher in the fan voting it would have helped get him some attention from being a player or coach selection. guzman should have been selected over zimmerman for the nats because short is thin this season and guzman should be on the team backing up tejada.

I said it’s a showcase of the star players and great marketing for MLB. That doesn’t mean I don’t care abut it. (I watch it every year and actively root for the NL.)

When do the injured guys get replaced?
Doesn’t look like Ibanez or Beltran will play. So the NL will likely add Kemp and Victorino because otherwise they have zero center fielders. Do they wait until after this vote to add guys?

The Giants broadcasters were upset Bengie didn’t make it. Bias I guess. Bengie doesn’t deserve it with a .698 OPS (good for 69th in the NL).

Does it really matter if Pablo makes it or not?? It’s a meaningless All Star Game. I wish Cain and Lincecum weren’t going. The Giants are actually in the race right now when the past 4 seasons they were out by now. Let’s give the guys 4 days off to prepare for the 2nd half. Let them hunting and fishing.

I have no issue with it
Look, he had a strong win total, that’s why he got in. To a lesser degree, that’s why marquis got in. Both have gaudy win totals not matching up with their performance so far. Marquis has an ERA just south of 4, so no one is going to complain. Wakefield has an ERA in the 4’s so people may gripe. I just treat it as the way the system works, W’s are still overvalued, and Maddon knows this, and put in Wake.

Orlando Hudson's the stinker
And it’s the player’s fault – they voted him in instead of Pablito. I guess the NL players just don’t want to have home field advantage in the series ever again.
Not even close!!!
Orlando Hudson: .288/.355/.416/.770 >> 5 HR & 41 RBI
Panda: .333/.388/.566/.954 >> 12 HR & 44 RBI
The way it works is that the fans pick the starters and the players pick the backups for each position. The players elected these position reserves: Brian McCann; Adrian Gonzalez; Orlando Hudson; Ryan Zimmerman; Miguel Tejada; Brad Hawpe; Justin Upton; and Hunter Pence.
Charlie Manuel picked the following: Ryan Howard, Prince Fielder, and Freddy Sanchez.
Because the players picked Hudson over Freddy Sanchez (his line is also quite a bit better than Hudson’s: .316/.355/.477/.832), and because of the “at least 1 player from each team” rule, Manuel was forced to choose Sanchez over Pablito (with McLouth gone he had no other real choice for the Pirates rep).
From the above list you can also see that the players shafted Pablito a 2nd time by picking Ryan Zimmerman as the backup 3B after David Wright. Pablito has better numbers even though he plays half his games in a much worse hitters park in comparison to Zman.
BTW, since there’s no DH in the game, and the NL has only 2 3Bs (unless we vote Panda in), I believe that Manuel’s plan to justify having 4 1Bs will be to start Pujols at 1B and then move him to 3B in the middle innings. That way the Card fans will love him for letting Pujols play 6 or 7 innings.

One more thing
I forgot to add that Hudson has been horrible the last 5-6 weeks. Near the end of May his batting average was in the .330s, so he must have hit barely over .200 for the month of June.
