The worst thing that happens when you use a spitter is you get ejected. Gambling has been against the rules of the game for much longer and the penalties are much stricter. I think Rose should be in, but I clearly understand why Giamatti did what he did. He had every right to.

But when you’re talking about context, gambling is looked upon far worse than scuffing the ball or corking a bat in baseball. The association with gambling in baseball is that you are fixing games. Baseball already had to deal with 50 years of scandal with games being fixed and which ultimately lead to the WS being fixed in 1919, they don’t exactly need more of that going on.

Yes, but it was a different time and Landis was too a racist just like Ty Cobb. He also looked the other way with Cobb and Tris Speaker fixing games. But again different time. It’s because of that kinda shit that it makes it not ok for Rose to do 70 years later.

by Hobbes2d on Jul 31, 2009 8:24 PM PDT up reply actions

Exactly

As deplorable as Cobb was, any comparison between him and Rose is irrelevant.

Rose is trying to get into the contemporary Hall so he needs a somewhat contemporary person to compare him to. There really isn’t one though, Rose is kind of the low-point.

But, whatever, I say put him in.

I don’t like the ‘different times’ argument. It was less than 100 years ago. Either we white wash baseball history and all of the ‘undesirables’ are out (Cobb, Landis, etc.) or we acknowledge human nature and take everybody. None of this halfway stuff.

The #1 greatest threat to America: BEARS

by norcalnick on Jul 31, 2009 8:28 PM PDT up reply actions

You’re looking at it the wrong way in this regard. While I disagree with what Cobb and Landis stood for you can’t deny their impact on the game nor can you deny the social climate of the times when they were alive. A lot can happen (and did) in less than 100 year span.

Plus you also have to understand the way baseball was played and the atmosphere it entailed at the turn of the century. 99% of these players came from poverty and the turnover of franchises and economy in general was always in flux. It was harsh times. It was very easy to influence a player to fix a game when he was getting paid peanuts and literally was an indentured servant to his team.

That after the trade deadline and after our brilliant GM has traded for two “big bats”, nothing has really changed. If the Giants fall behind by 2 or 3 runs late, it’s game over. And I’d be saying the same thing even with Sanchez in the lineup.

But also because maybe Sadowski was done a disservice.
I dunno , you who saw him pitch tell me…

CBS 5 Sports says "Sadowski struggles" , but it was 1 – 0 when Affeldt came in…

…and 4 – 0 when Affeldt left.

So remind me…who struggled?
