Why is Garko starting vs. Righties?

Has Ishikawa been demoted to just the defensive back-up dude?

Star-divide

We all know the numbers.  Garko is very good vs. lefties but is quite pedestrian vs Righties, with numbers that are similar to Ishikawa's.  Ishi is clearly a better fielder at first base, even though Garko can do a split while stretching to make a play, ala Harmon Killebrew or a prima ballerina   Travis has been improving, and considering his better defense and similar numbers vs. Righties, he should probably be starting vs most righties.  Of course Garko could start some games at another position, but he is primarily a first baseman.  But as of now, it looks like Bochy,  with his hydrocephalic head totally blocking the moon, causing a  "Giant" eclipse, should not obscure the fact that he seems to like to play the higher salaried Garko.  Which reminds me that the insurance commercials which play during the giants games are not really about Garko and Affeltd. My Farmer's almanac does take into account what town Bochy's head is in when predicting the tides.    Ok  enough of ragging on our esteemed manager: How would you play Garko and Ishi?

How would you play Garko vs Ishikawa this year?
Garko starts the majority of games, Ishikawa is a late inning defensive replacement and selective pinch hitter vs certain righties.

A pure platoon is best, Ishikawa starts vs Righties, Garco starts vs lefties

Garko can sometimes start at another position and Travis should get the bulk of playing time at first as his defense is too valuable

Our pitchers strike out so many guys, we can afford a crappy defensive guy at first, even Jesus Guzman if he could hit.

Pablo is still our long term solution at first.

Garko wasn’t acquired to platoon, he should see the majority of the playing time.

I was thinking split time vs righties, with TI being a defensive replacement the rest of the time.

by DesertFox on Jul 31, 2009 12:24 AM PDT reply actions

I agree with this. I voted for a platoon, but I really think they should both play about half the time.

by taliesin on Jul 31, 2009 9:11 AM PDT up reply actions

My thoughts exactly. Travis gets some starts versus righties, and of course comes in for defense too.

Yup. Garko is going to get the majority of starts at first, which means he will often start against righties.

It’s like TI is any better vs righties than Garko

by superk1ng on Jul 31, 2009 12:26 AM PDT reply actions

But he is much better defensively, so overall I think he’s a slightly better player (at least equal) versus righties. Obviously they didn’t trade for Garko to sit him 3/4 of the time, so Garko should get some of the starts versus righties, if nothing else to keep him fresh.

by taliesin on Jul 31, 2009 12:36 PM PDT up reply actions

Well Garko is the better hitter against RH as he’s got a higher OPS this year and better than that over the last 3 years. It’s not a huge difference though as it’s possible that Ishikawa’s defence makes him more valuable. It’s also worth noting that Garko is the hot bat with an OPS of 907 post all star break compared to Ishikawa’s 545, although it depends how much you read into that.

Generally i don’t have a problem with Garko starting against RH & probably have a little more faith in him going forward than i do TI, although i’d like to see TI get some starts as well.

that's sort of my issue with it....

Garko is only a clear upgrade vs LHP, which is still an upgrade, but it’s marginalized. Still, Garko for Barnes is like a train robbery compared to the Sanchez deal

by NeifiChicken on Jul 31, 2009 10:54 AM PDT up reply actions

But as of now, it looks like Bochy, with his hydrocephalic head totally blocking the moon, causing a “Giant” eclipse, should not obscure the fact that he seems to like to play the higher salaried Garko.

I think Garko is going to get a clear shot to prove he should be playing everyday, and if he struggles, you’ll start to see Travis getting occasional starts against tougher righties.

Just wanted to add that as long we keep winning, why worry about this? Keep sending out the same guys, even the suddenly hot Eugenio. It’s convenient that Uribe is cooling off though, because it makes it easy to shake up the lineup to get Freddy Sanchez in.

Focusing on wrong split

Everybody is looking at the wrong platoon. Ishi’s lefty/righty splits are:
Left: .304/.333/.637
Right: .264/.321/.742
Hardly making it worth sitting Garko vs. righties when his split is:
Right: .265/.349/.773

However, Ishi does have another split that is jaw-dropping. His home/road split:
Home: .350/.389/.937
Road: .175/.248/.500
Besides that, Ishi has hit 5 of his 7 HRs, and 21 of his 30 RBIs, at home, in about the same # of AB’s.

It’s obvious to me that Ishi should be starting just about every home game vs. RHP, and some vs. LHP, besides being a late-inning D replacement everywhere. He should almost never start on the road, and should instead be sent to a psychologist to figure out what’s going on in his head to make him turn into a little-leaguer in road parks.

The burning question in my mind is why hasn’t somebody on the Giants noticed this and addressed it sooner? With those numbers and his stellar D, Ishi is a freakin’ all-star at home, so obviously he has the ability to be a good everyday hitter. He just has some mental block about hitting away from home that should be correctable.

by Fla-Giant on Jul 31, 2009 7:09 AM PDT reply actions

I disagree

Sure, the .937 OPS at home is not sustainable and due for regression, but anybody can see with their naked eye that Ishi is much more comfortable hitting at AT&T than on the road. And the splits back it up. It’s not as if this is unheard of in baseball. There are plenty of cases where hitters do much better statistically at home than on the road for years at a time, although in Ishi’s case the splits are amazingly bipolar.

Right now I say let’s ride the trend until it fails. It’s not like Garko’s lighting it up. Of course, I know there’s no way they platoon Garko at this time due to Sabean’s ego. Any Ishi/Garko platoon would be an admission that he screwed up in the Barnes/Garko trade.

I think you’re reading too much into a little over 100 at-bats at home.

by xanthan on Jul 31, 2009 7:57 AM PDT up reply actions

Also, .434 BABIP at home. Is that also due to psychological issues?

by xanthan on Jul 31, 2009 7:58 AM PDT up reply actions

He is not the only giant with ridiculous home/road splits

Most of the team has these type of splits. Suggesting that there most be a soup kitchen or something in SF that these guys eat at, that puts some Balco lab stuff in the repast.

They got Garko to be the everyday 1B. If they ultimately have to carry two 1Bs in order to platoon, it limits roster flexibility elsewhere. Ishikawa would do well to take a lot of balls in the OF to make himself a more key player to the team.

Ishi will be gone anyway once Aurillia gets done rehabbing. Does make me ill to see a player like Ishikawa get replaced while Renteria and Molina get their heads permanently chisled on to on to the Mt. Rushmore of the Giants infield.

Do not meddle in the affairs of GM's, for they are subtle and quick to anger.

I really find it hard to believe that they would DFA Ishikawa so they could put Rich Aurilia’s corpse on the roster. That would just be too stupid, even for the Giants.

offensively, I didn't see much difference between the 2

This to me didn’t seem like any more necessary a trade than Sanchez-Alderson.

The only thing I can think of is that Garko has proven that he can do a 20-HR/20-2b season, while Ishikawa has not.

by hokysmksbw on Jul 31, 2009 12:59 PM PDT reply actions

exactly

Travis attributed his baseball epiphany to his religious revelation last year. When he became a born again Christian last year, and put his faith in the lord, his baseball game started coming together. Talk about the psychology of religion. Garco on the other hand is supposedly more of a renaissance man.
