Hey Kevin, you know what will make this better? whining about it

I don’t disagree with anything he said. I was hoping they would trade him so he could get a shot at actual playing time somewhere. It’s pretty disingenuous to reference how many games he was with the Giants, because the number of at-bats don’t add up to anything of note.

No, he didn’t whine. He threw a great big baby tantrum instead. Much better.

Think of it like being passed over for a promotion which you’re qualified for a few times by your company, when you’re ultimately next in line for that job.

Personally, I’d be pissed too. Can’t say I wouldn’t throw a big baby tantrum, too.

I'm thinking but nothing's happening.

it’s more like being passed over for a promotion because your company decides to hire somebody much much much more qualified than you

by FluLikeSymptoms on Jul 31, 2009 10:47 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

After having been passed over for the same promotion a few time previously by lazy employees who suck worse than you do.

by JRPhillips on Jul 31, 2009 10:48 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I disagree.

Its like when your company fires the only person possibly better than you at a particular job, then gives it to you for a week, decides your not good at it, and then gives it to someone who has never really shown an aptitude for the work. Then, when the company doesn’t like that guy, they hire your again, decide your not good, and once again give the job to the guy with no aptitude.

Finally, after flip flopping you and this other employee for a month and a half, they decide to do an outside hire and bring in someone who, in the past, has been good at the job. That is what has happened to Frandsen this year.

I have no problem with Freddy Sanchez being the second baseman, but I think the organization should have stuck with either Downs or Frandsen for a full month after Burris was demoted. Instead, the FO kept shuffling Downs and Frandsen between the majors and AAA.

If you threw a big baby tantrum at the office after not getting a promotion, odds are you would never see another chance at a promotion, and may not keep your job. Man up.

Come on, dude, how many tantrums do you see thrown on a daily basis in baseball? You make it sound like Frandsen’s the first guy who’s ever done something like this.

I don’t blame the manager for pulling him, but if he’s not a repeat offender, then how bad is it really that he threw his bat?

I'm thinking but nothing's happening.

by JRPhillips on Jul 31, 2009 11:10 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree.

He has never thrown a tantrum like this before (to my knowledge). Some people are making it sound like Frandsen has always been a snotty prick or something. I don’t see that at all. The guy hasn’t shown any ill toward the organization until this year.

by Squire_Boone on Jul 31, 2009 11:19 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

It comes down to this – he’s not as good as he thinks he is. Either he should figure out how to play in the bigs, or quit bitching like a whiny little girl to whoever will listen. At this point, Frandsen has made such a poor impression on me with his undeserved attitude of entitlement that I don’t want to see him up in SF. The bat-throwing incident is just icing on the cake.

I’m guessing at this point he’s trying to get himself traded, which seems like a much smarter career move than hoping things work out with his hometown team.

I think plenty of clubs can differentiate between a player who’s unhappy with the way his current club has jerked him around and a player who creates problems in the clubhouse regardless of where he bats in the lineup or how his team does. Kevin Frandsen isn’t Billy Wagner or Milton Bradley.

I’m not suggesting Frandsen’s going to turn into a major league All-Star somewhere else. But if he doesn’t, it won’t be because of a few quotes to a newspaper in Fresno.

"He is Tim Lincecum...the Most Interesting Pitcher in the World."

by Kitspool on Jul 30, 2009 4:17 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

It’s not just these quotes in this one article. He’s been butt-hurt all season, and whining about it openly to the press. He’s a player whose current role is as a utility guy when needed at the big league level. Instead of trying to contribute, he complains when he’s back in the minors. He throws a temper tantrum during a game when the club acquires an all-star to play his position up in SF. This isn’t just a guy “unhappy” with his role. He’s behaving like a spoiled, entitled child. Not cool.

Some argue that he hasn’t had a chance to show what he can do at the big league level, but he has been called up a few times. And he’s sucked each time. Instead of crying, maybe he should work on improving his game.

I’ve been of the opinion that he should be given a chance somewhere (even if it’s not SF) to prove himself, but I don’t blame anybody at this point for leaving him right where he is.

Frandsen could definitely have handled it better...

…but I thought Bochy calling Frandsen a “stopgap guy”, and that now that they wanted someone to get regular starts at second they were calling up Downs, were at least as bad as anything Frandsen has been quoted as saying.

I’m with joe t right below here. Frandsen can play at LEAST as well as Aurilia at this point, so why is Aurilia and his .210/.259/.286 allowed to stay on the ML roster AND get starts occasionally? Seems like if you feel that Frandsen is destined for a utility role, maybe you should let him have that role instead of end-of-career Aurilia. At the very fucking least, you give Frandsen a chance to prove his value there, so you don’t have to overpay another utility man next season too.

I just don’t blame him for being pissed, they’re screwing with Frandsen’s liveliehood here. If the Giants don’t want him, they need to give him some chance to prove himself somewhere else.

I'm thinking but nothing's happening.

by JRPhillips on Jul 31, 2009 10:25 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

he's absolutely right, IMO

Auriellia gets to go out and suck all the time and yet Frandsen has a bad stretch and gets sent out? Frandsen should have been the opening day second baseman and Burris either should have been the shortstop or starting in Fresno. Everyone points to the Renteria signing as a “necessity” given the lack of depth, but I would much rather have either Frandsen or Burriss playing that spot with someone that can actually hit at a power position (Dunn or one of the other guys that was available this past off season).

by joe t on Jul 30, 2009 3:51 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Open letter to Mr. Fransden:

Know your role and shut your mouth, Kevin.

It’s OK to be displeased about your situation. It’s not OK to be so pissed that your manager pulls you in the second inning last night because you lost your temper about it.

Maybe you’ll get traded. Maybe you’ll leave via minor league free agency at the end of the year. Either way, that act won’t play where you think you belong: the big leagues.

You’re getting paid to be a professional. Start acting like one.

by Ed Jew on Jul 30, 2009 3:56 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Ok, fair enough. But shouldn’t a professional organization not jerk-around their employees? Frandsen has been incredibly unlucky (2008 Achilles tear, Burriss actually hitting well, management that puts emphasis on Spring Training stats, ridiculously low BABIP), and the Giants have not given him a legitimate chance like they have with Aurillia, Burriss, Renteria, and Molina who have all made a net negative contribution to the team. I just have little faith in the Giants management.

I would guess so. I think it depends how you evaluate his defense. His bat is unbelievably horrible, but for a catcher it’s still above replacement, though still below average (10 runs below, in fact).

Man, every time I look him up on fangraphs I see that 1.8% BB%, and it’s just, WTF? Lincecum has only walked one less time than Bengie has. Think about that.

But shouldn’t a professional organization not jerk-around their employees?

To me, what has happened to Frandsen this year is a reflection of what is wrong with the Giants development style. Almost every player that has been called up this year has been given a week and a half or so to do something (with only 3 or so starts, mind you). Every time a called up player doesn’t impress within the first few games, they are relegated to the bench and eventually demoted.

Bowker, Frandsen, Velez, Guzman, and Downs have all been victims of this strategy. What message does this send to promoted players? Perform right away, or prepare to be demoted. What does this make players do? Press. Its like the Giants want players to fail.

You know, I feel bad for Kevin Frandsen, I really do. I don’t think he’s gotten a fair shake. That said, my sympathy wanes every time he opens his mouth.

Some guys seize an opportunity when given, even if its just a BABIP fluke. Others put up an OPS+ of 68, blow out their achilles and play so poorly in a pennant race they have no choice but to be optioned, small sample size be damned. Them’s the breaks, kid. Throwing your bat and complaining to the Fresno Bee isn’t going to help.

If you have power, yes...

..If you’re Kevin Frandsen it’s about approach. If it’s 1-0 or 2-0 fine, get a ball you can drive and take your hacks. If it’s 0-2 and you’re trying to pull that pitch on the outside corner, that ball hit hard to shortstop doesn’t cut it. I realize this could be said about most on this roster, but Frandsen has the bat control and the eye to be better.

My guess is that he has, and has been rebuffed. So now he airs his dirty laundry to the press and via tantrums. The prudent course of action is to put his head down and get it done – then maybe another team will mention an interest. But right now, it’s not like he’s so incredibly amazing that any other team is going to knock down the Giants’ door to get him.

This is the first tantrum he’s thrown that I’ve heard of (not the complaining-to-the-press variety). Is this consistent behavior, or is this the first time he’s thrown stuff and physically lost his cool? Previous tantrum

There was that one game earlier in the season when the game was on the line and they put in either Uribe or Renteria to pinch-hit for him. They showed him in the dugout in what appeared to be at least a mild tantrum. I think it was Wotus who appeared to be trying to calm him down.

Who knows what else happened in the clubhouse afterward, but I’m sure it didn’t endear him to the coaching staff to have him openly questioning they’re decision. If he pulled that kind of crap in the minor leagues as well, there’s no doubt that he’s put himself in the doghouse. I’d guess it’s been an ongoing problem if they pulled him from a game after throwing his helmet or whatever.

I agree, but there’s a line that, once crossed, pisses coaches off. Frandsen has crossed it:
- He showed his displeasure in public (the dugout scene and helmet throwing incident))
- He voiced his displeasure in the media
- He’s let his ego get waaaaay out in front of his talent level
- He’s come off looking like how he’s treated is far more important to him than how the team does. It may be a cliche, but his only words to the media should be, “Sure I’m disapppointed, but I just want to help the team win. It’s their decision, so I’ll go back to Fresno and earn myself another shot.”

Giants Human Resources needs to send him for some anti-douchebaggery training.

The guy has a big fucking reason to be pissed. He’s been patient and put up the right numbers in AAA. he hasn’t gotten a real shot at the major league level and guys who are much worse have. Now the team goes and trades for Sanchez, who plays the only position that Frandsen had a chance to start. I don’t blame him for blowing up in one game. He probably just reached a breaking point in frustration. We’ve all been there. He’s human after all.

But now, he just needs to go out there and do his job again and hopefully this won’t be a regular occurrence.

Me either. All he’s ever done is whine and think he’s entitled to start simply because he’s been around longer than Burriss, Uribe and anyone else the Giants might try at 2b. And he did get a shot, 2 years ago in the 2nd half and was meh. He couldn’t beat out an old Ray Durham, couldn’t beat out Manny Burriss in spring training and nearly every time he’s played for the Giants he has pressed so much that he has been awful. His attempts to pick up SS or 3b or OF have failed too. He should be pissed at himself for sucking, not at the Giants for not thinking he’s good enough to be a regular player.

I don’t think Frandsen got a fair shot at second base THIS year, but he’s gotten fair shots in the past and hasn’t gotten it done. He had plenty of at bats in 2007, and although he got hot in September, for the most part he was unimpressive. Then in 2008, Omar Vizquel’s injury opened up a golden opportunity for him to show something at shortstop and he went all Jesus Guzman on them, forcing them to keep Bocock. He later got hurt, of course. Then this year, while he hasn’t gotten a fair shot, he could have at least approached the Mendoza line in his sporadic play, but he hit about .120. He cannot fault the Giants’ for finally making a move with the lack of production they have seen at second base this season. He has nobody to blame but himself.

I can blame Sabean & Co. for a lot of things, but I have trouble getting worked up over not giving a regular shot to a 27 year old guy with 400 MLB plate appearances and a .650 OPS prior to blowing out his achilles tendon.

Frandsen acts as if the team should be making all their moves around him. He’s a utilty guy at best, but apprently has a million dollar ego.

I suspect the “hometown team” thing might have contibuted to this. In his previous stints on the big team, he spent a lot more time being profiled/interviewed on the radio and in the press than was really warranted. As a result, he probably got more attention out in public than he deserved with kiss-asses telling him great he was.

All that attention probably went to his head and he felt he reached the big time before he really had.

I’m beginning to think his lack of a fair shake is due entirely to his attitude and not his performance.

This organization is loyal to a fault to it’s players, vets and up-and-comers. We had to wait for Manny to free-fall and destroy his confidence before he got sent back down. Velez is on his what 4(?) try? The only other player I can remember getting this bad of a treatment is Linden and we all know his temperament.
