HEY, LOOK AT ME, I'M GINATZ BRASZ

I’M GOING TO KEEP GIVING ORLYA SHOTS TO “REDEEM” HIMSELF, EVEN THOUGH HE’S CLOSE TO BEING WASHED UP (PROBABLY) BUT NOT FRED LEWIS, EVEN THOUGH HE’S PROBABLY IN HIS PRIME AND IS AT THE VERY WORST A GOOD 4TH OUTFIELDER/PLATOON PARTNER.

AND I’M GOING TO CARRY 5 INFIELDERS EVEN THOUGH ONLY TWO OF THEM CAN PASSABLY PLAY IN THE MIDDLE, SO IF ONE OF THE TWO GOES DOWN OR SUMTHIN, I HAVE TO PUT ORLYA THAT GREAT VETERAN GIANT AT SECOND.

I’M SO SMART OMGZ

Actually It Is You And Mr Beatown415 That Are Showing Yourselves To Be The Morons

Using the starting 3B as the only backup catcher was a short term move that worked out just fine and it is very likely that using the starting 2B as the only backup SS and going with just five infielders (while going with 8 in the bullpen) for a simular short term (say until the All-Star Break) will also work out just fine.

this is a ridiculously stupid idea. Now we’re going to see washed up Rich Aurilia playing all around the infield, and getting starts against righthanders because he’s the lone backup infielder. We have seen recently that Edgar Renteria is more effective when he gets a day or two off, yet now that means the dropoff will be severe because Aurilia will be in the lineup. This team has not had the balls to do what they should have done all season, which is tell Richie that it’s over. Just give me the phone you gutless cowards, and I’ll make the call for you. I’m not upset for Downs, but I’m upset for Frandsen. He’s the one who should be in this role that they’re giving to someone who’s no longer capable of doing it.

Proud new dad of Edgardo errr Edgar Renteria!!!

In other words the Bothy/Sabean era keeps on behaveing like the Bochy/Sabean era. And Yes I blame the Big Head for part of this. I am sure the front office asked him would you rather have player X, Y or Aurilia. If Aurilia stay for more than a few day we know the answer from Bork!

I didn’t mind the 1.5 catcher deal, since it was a scripted short run deal, and made some sense as it allowed for some roster decisions to play out.

The question I’d like you to answer is: Aurilia, why?

Aurilia makes sense as as a lefty masher, even if he hasn’t done particularly well as that so far: his history is strong there. And he can give you that high leverage at bat of the bench late in a game, or at least is the best candidate the giants have for that. All of that is useful….

But it has become VERY clear that 2nd base is the position where the Giants must upgrade. So unless a trade occurs, it has to be either Downs with an occasional Uribe, or it has to be Frandsen. Also very clear is that Renteria needs regular rest, so either Uribe or Frandsen will get quite a bit of play as backup SS (and the club needs Uribe as backup 3b).

So, I infer you—and at this point, the giants—are trying to ride out Uribe at 2nd until the break or a move is necessary by poor play or injury. Still, what does that gain? You still have to make a decision on either Aurilia or miller or medders. Is it likely that much is going to change in the little time left before the break?

I think it might have something to do with Aurilia’s father’s death. Aurilia’s been around (off and on) for a long time, and they probably don’t want to kick him when he’s down; it’s just bad form to fire a long-time employee immediately upon his return from his father’s funeral.

If this is the case, and they’re just giving Aurilia a little time (say, through the all-star break), I’d be OK with that decision.

Trades Take Time

I believe this short term roster solution is all about buying time to make the trade the Giants want to make that will also allow the Giants to return to the more traditional roster configuration of 7 Relievers and 6 Infielders instead of 8 Relievers and 5 Infielders. My guess is that the Giants are looking into turning Sanchez, an outfielder (ideally Lewis), and a middle grade prospect or two into the desired right handed bat Sabean has said they are seeking.

by giantsrainman on Jul 4, 2009 1:47 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don't think carrying 2 middle infielders is a creative or good idea.

And carrying 1.5 catchers wasn’t the head-scratching part…. the 1.5 catchers because you want to carry 6 outfielders (well, 5 plus Velez) was perplexing.

You don't think that just perhaps

Having Molina play every day for a couple months could have had something to do with the precipitous decline in his production?

A hot August weekday, before a small crowd, when the only thing at stake is the tissue-thin difference between a thing done well and a thing done ill. Insofar as the clutch hitter is not a sportswriter's myth, it is a vulgarity, like a writer who writes only for money.

Ugh this is a decision full of fail. :(

I mean granted I don’t really think Frandsen is going to be any better than Uribe, but can they at least bring him back if they’re going to dump Downs so we have more depth in the MIF? I really don’t like the idea of having a short bench especially with Bochy around to make stupid double switches in the 5th inning of a game.

Please trade for Uggla or Sanchez like ASAP. For fucks sake.

No, Richie Will Be At 2B With One Of Renteria Or Uribe At SS When The Other Is On The Bench.

In the remaining 8 games of this homestand (after today) this should happen just twice to give both Renteria and Uribe a day off. I would guess that Richie might also get a start each at 1B and 3B in these next 8 games to give Ishikawa and Sandoval a day off.

Again, I see no problem with this as a short term solution while Brian works on the trade or two he would like to do at the All-Star Break.

by giantsrainman on Jul 4, 2009 1:59 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

The only way this is a suitable short term solution

is that there is a trade coming involving one of the pitchers, and we don’t want to DFA anybody in the next week or so. Possibly because we need to showcase Sanchez more to trade him.

Until Brian Is Able To Trade Sanchez.

Sanchez is the only one with options that might make sense to send down but the Giants believe (correctly in my judgement) that sending him down would make it harder for possible trade partners to scout him since he would not be pitching against MLB competition.
