Organization Prospect Depth Chart: Starting Pitchers
The Giants are going to make a trade this summer. "It's gonna happen whether you like it or not". That was a comment made by GM Brian Sabean. Or was it the mayor? Either way, the Giants trading partner will most likely seek pitching in return for a bat Sabean craves.
What pitching prospects do the Giants have? Which prospects should the Giants retain which pitching prospects should the Giants offer in trade? How do you rank the Giants pitching prospects?
What is your SF Giants starting pitching prospects Top 10?
1. LHP Madison Bumgarner
2. RHP Tim Alderson
3. LHP Scott Barnes
4, RHP Henry Sosa
5. LHP Craig Clark
6. RHP Jorge Bucardo
7. LHP Clayton Tanner

For an above average hitter under team control for a while I’d give up any of them, except for Bumgarner.

Anybody but Bumgarner can go, but I’d try real hard to make it somebody other than J. Bucardo, as I think he’s ultimately going to prove the best of the rest by a good measure, and they ought to be able to avoid sending him off right now when he hasn’t done much to separate himself.

There have been some scouts who have raved about his arm action since he was in the DSL, and although he’s so far always played in leagues where you can’t put too much faith in stats, his stats have always shown good K rates, good BB rates, and very good GB rates, which are pretty much the holy stats trinity for live armed teenagers. I’ve noticed listening to his games this year in the NWL that he seems to be getting lots of called third strikes as well, which could be indicative of a lot a movement on his pitches. If he can throw a power sinker with good movement for strikes (and he doesn’t get hurt) he’s going to have a major league career of some sort in his future.
I’m looking for him to really blow up as a prospect over the course of the next year.

I would definitely rate young guys like that with high upside above the middling guys who are old for their levels.
Surkamp I might rate higher than Clark or Pucetas; he is older for his level but is still in his age-21 season, and has shown excellent K rates.

we're probably not going to make any big trades because we're unwilling to give anything up
All you have to do is listen to what Sabean says on KNBR to figure that out.
He’s basically said
-We’re not trading any prospects worth anything
-Too many teams think they’re in contention so they’re probably not going to sell at the deadline
-We’d be willing to take a pending free agent if it’s for close to nothing
I don’t mind this because I’d rather we keep our prospects

-Too many teams think they’re in contention so they’re probably not going to sell at the deadline
We’re still 4+ weeks away from the deadline. A lot can and will change. Team’s will get desperate.
That being said, I think I’d be fine sending off any prospect on that list beside Bumgarner. (Of course, I’m assuming the Giants aren’t severely overpaying for whoever they acquire.)
by deuce deuce on Jul 3, 2009 5:04 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
4 weeks away or not, most teams are still going to think they’re close enough in contention to where most likely won’t be willing to give up their biggest trade pieces. That’s been the case the past couple of years, which for the most part has rendered the trade deadline inconsequential.

he's also addressed specific players
Jermaine Dye: Not happening because he’s not on the market and the White Sox are in the division race
Victory Martinez: Not happening because it would take a Bumgarner+ to get it done and they’re not willing to trade Bumgarner

In this economic climate, if a non-contending team wants to dump a player, the accepting team will take on the salary or send a prospect. I think Sabean is just saying if the giants take on a upcoming FA, it will be assuming the salary because the giants can do it and will send a marginal prospect back.

1. Bumgarner
2. Alderson
3. Clark
4. Barnes
5. J. Bucardo
6. Ronick
7. Pucetas
8. Tanner
9. Nicholson
10. Surkamp
I prefer Ronick to King. I’d put Sosa #11 on this list, so far; his walks concern me. I’d expect to put Wheeler somewhere around #5 when he signs, with the chance to move up quickly if earned.

3.1 BB/9 this year? 2.9 BB/9 last year? That’s not low but it’s not so high that I’d bump a good prospect down to 11th behind some of the guys you have on there.

Any ranking of Sosa is pretty much entirely based on how likely you think he is to regain his fastball. If he gets it back, he’s definitely a top 5 pitching prospect, maybe even our best after Bumgerson. If it stays in the high 80’s, he probably doesn’t even belong in the top 10.

Well, there's this
http://www.mccoveychronicles.com/2009/5/22/883364/minor-lines-5-21-09#16033086
And also…it fits? I don’t know, maybe it’s not enough to conclude he’s lost velocity. I’m not sure what’s worse, though – if he has some kind of injury that’s preventing him from pitching like he used to, or if he is pitching like he used to, and AA hitters simply have no problem hitting him.

Is that still true, or is he regaining velocity? I have no idea, but his K rate is substantially lower this year, and it isn’t getting any better in the last 7, 14, or 28 days according to minorleaguesplits.com

Sosa's velocity
The radar gun at Dodd Stadium is never accurate. It always reads low. Next time I see Sosa pitch I’ll try to sneak a peek at a scout’s radar gun and let you guys know how hard he is throwing.
by SBcaptain2 on Jul 6, 2009 1:08 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Sosa was miles ahead of any of those guys (outside of the top 2 obviously) before he got hurt. The fact that he has come back and pitched pretty well makes me defer a lot to his pre-injury status.
by FluLikeSymptoms on Jul 3, 2009 5:35 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I’d agree with that if his injury had been to his arm, but it was his knee. How long can a knee injury harm a pitcher’s fastball? This is two years down the road from his surgery. He’s still better than most any of the other non Madbum or Alderson prospects, but his poor K rate not just at AA, but in both partial seasons at SJ is certainly worrying.

ranking is for suckers
I prefer to use grades. Ranking, you always get a #1 no matter how bad your system sucks, and a #10 no matter how stellar it is. Plus it tells you a lot: an A-grade arm shouldn’t get thrown into a trade, a C-grade arm is fungible.
To me, every arm left in the system is a C or below except for Bumgarner (A-), Alderson (B) and Sosa (B-). Don’t get me wrong, there are a lot of promising C+ arms going around, from Barnes to Bucardo or Tanner to Pucetas, but I’d trade any two of those on any day of the week for an honest-to-crikey A-grade hitting prospect or a major-league-average hitter at an up-the-middle position.
Which is why it isn’t happening. The league isn’t that dumb.

I agree with this. After the top two (three with Sosa returning to form), the rest of the guys are pretty fungible and would be lucky to be 5th starters, relievers, or AAAA swingmen. If the team can get a reliever or two out of the whole bunch, though, it’s still pretty good.

This is the kind of info I was trying to obtain with this post. – which propspects are keepers. Now we as Giants fans should not throw ourselves down the stairs if the Giants trade a pitcher not named Bumgarner or Alderson.

Absolutely not. I would trade Alderson in a package for a very good player, but I probably wouldn’t trade Bumgarner at all; LHPs with that kind of velocity and control are not easy to find.
Anyone else is fair game, and I would bet against any of the remaining guys amounting to much at all. Maybe there’s a Jason Grilli or Mike Remlinger in the bunch, a reliever who plays a lot of years, but it would take an unanticipated big jump for any of the others to make a bigger impact.

getting better to good, scouting…..is probably the best way to say it.
Law is interesting in that his entry in to this world was first through a sabermetric analysis, and only later started to do much classical scouting. Most that are competent at both did it the other way around.
He’s still prone to some odd, and wild takes though…but that is part of the fun with him, as he has been right quite a few times with these. He’s also prone to dismissing some players too quickly, but part of that is because of his job: he likes to see the players in person, but he is reporting on the whole league, so he only sees them in scouting snapshots (though he is very perceptive in that). It can be a problem with the Villalona, Chris Carter, Mike Stanton types: those that can either look really bad, or really good—and no shame in that, everyone struggles with those types, with only those who follow the players in person for a long time being able to make really make decisive calls on them.
