Freddy Sanchez Trade Overflow Thread
There's a lot of good discussion/whining going on in the last Freddy Sanchez thread, and I don't want it to blow up my computer every time I open it...
Cliff's Notes version of my reaction for the vultures who want a quick hit of despair: The Giants a better team, and if they make the playoffs by a game or two in the next couple of seasons, it was probably a worthwhile deal, regardless of what Alderson does. But the Giants have trouble scoring runs because they a) don't get on base and b) don't hit for power, and they moved one of their more tradeable assets for a player who doesn't do either a) or b) particularly well.

Too much math here,,,
Makes Sabes’ head hurt.
Let’s just go with the “# of gritty highlight catches last year” part.
Why couldn't McCovey have hit the ball just three feet higher??
If we could get Willingham for the players that we SHOULD have traded for Sanchez, I could just pretend that the trades were flipped.
I choose to watch the Giants try to score runs. Not because it is easy, but because it is hard.

That’s a straw man argument. Me rooting for one team has no effect on the outcome of another. I root for the Giants. If the Giants can’t get in the playoffs on their own merit, selling my very soul to root for their hated rival shows isn’t going to do shit. If you want to sell your soul go right ahead.
Perhaps an underappreciated consequence of the trade...
Is the fact that Connecticut was left without their starting pitcher tonight. The trade was made official 5 minutes before scheduled first pitch. Tarp was on the field, but it was still a huge surprise.
As a result, there were 4 position players that pitched at least 1/3 of an inning. 2 of them were catchers. And they only lost by 4 runs.
Probably the most surreal night I’ve ever had at a baseball game.
Really a crappy thing to do to the rest of their pitching prospects, presuming they care about any of them.
Let Alderson pitch tonight. Finalize the trade tomorrow morning. Sanchez wasn’t going anywhere.
WilRiv had to be mightily disappointed that in a game where 4 position players pitched, Michael McBryde never toed the rubber.

It is always a disappointment when they lose, Cheno. I like the Giants. I want them to win. hey are not going to with the way this team is built right now. That is disappointing. Trading away pieces of this team’s future to fix this collection of suck is even more disappointing.
by Lars The Wanderer on Jul 29, 2009 8:08 PM PDT up reply actions
Also, I think the Giants need rotation help. The myth of the Giants deep pitching depth needs to die already. Johnson isn’t going to pitch again and the dreck they are bringing at #5 isn’t going to win them the wildcard.
by Lars The Wanderer on Jul 29, 2009 8:04 PM PDT up reply actions
I pretty much agree with this. For the team to make a run this year (not even talking about the future) either Zito or Durty needs to step up and stay consistent. We’ve got two studs, but two studs and a pile of nuthin’ plus a mediocre offense doesn’t make a playoff team. Two studs plus a solid third guy? Now… maybe.
I’m hopeful that the Ryan Sadowski experiment may end soon. Frankly, I don’t understand why it hasn’t already. How’s Joey Martinez’s rehab been going? Is there any chance he could take that spot in the rotation? I’d feel much more optimistic about putting together a decent rotation with him as the fifth guy as opposed to the Duderino.

- First, I really wish that one new guy hadn’t been mean to BaronVCE in the last thread. I don’t mind trading Alderson.
-
- I think Freddy Sanchez is a good trade target. Alderson is too high of a price to pay, especially when combined with the Scott Barnes trade earlier. If the team was willing to trade Alderson, we should have gotten something better or just done nothing at all.
-
- I’ll be rooting like hell for the team to win some games and make me feel better about all this. I just explained the trade to my 12-year-old son. He nodded, then started talking about how he watched Mrs. Doubtfire this afternoon.

Was the Hillenbrand trade really that bad?
Bruce Bochy would like you to look at the career numbers and stop complaining.
Accardo WAS good though. Injuries really took their toll, but if they hadn’t he very well could be the Giants closer right now. I look at it more as Sabean got lucky it wasn’t a bad trade— he should’ve known that Hillenbrand wasn’t the answer and he couldn’t have possibly known that Accardo was destined to flame out.

by Smoke on the Water on Jul 29, 2009 8:36 PM PDT up reply actions
The Giants got Hillenbrand for free, or for the differential between the value of Accardo and that of Chulk. That is, the cost of Hillenbrand was the VORP of Accardo minus the VORP of Chulk. Hillenbrand at the time was hitting about .300 in the American League, and he could play first or third. This acquisition by the Giants didn’t work out, but it was extremely rational.
I don't think that's quite fair
You can argue that this team is not a legitimate contender (and I would agree) but this team is 9 games above .500 and leading the Wild Card. The team that traded for Hillenbrand was 4 games over .500 and pretty clearly not going anywhere. Also, Sanchez is (for all intents and purposes) signed for next year too

Tall task for Sanchez..
He’s going to have to hit .400 to erase this pain.
It occurs to me that it’s not because of the Young Guys that the Giants are losing. It’s not the Ishikawas and Schierholtzs and Sandovals that are making the Giants so bad. It’s the veterans on the team that stink. But, who is being replaced by these trades?
I think the Giants rebuilding just went down the toilet for another couple years and we are now back to overpaid over-the-hill veterans.
Do not meddle in the affairs of GM's, for they are subtle and quick to anger.

Had some more time to soak this in
A couple more thoughts.
1. We were ready to trade Jonathan Sanchez for Freddy Sanchez a few weeks ago. Then Randy Johnson injury happened. Jonathan Sanchez was no longer available.
2. Will Tim Alderson ever been as good (or better) than Jonathan Sanchez? I don’t know. They are the polar opposites of each other. High upside hard throwing lefty vs crafty right handed breaking ball pitcher. I know Alderson’s biggest assett is “advanced feel for the game”, and as a prospect, that means your ceiling is limited and that assett becomes less and less attractive the higher up you go in development. My gut tells me if I were forced to choose between those 2, I’d rather keep Jonathan Sanchez. I cannot think of 10 left handed pitchers in the MLB that throws 97 MPH.
3. So there it is. Giants brass decided to keep the higher upside player that is ready right now. When I think of it in those terms, it doesn’t hurt as much. Well, it still hurts, but not as much.
Please, Jonathan Sanchez, make us look good.
I don’t think it’s all that close between JSanchez and Alderson. Dirty is a solid #4 starter right now, with a chance to be much better; Alderson aspires to be a #4 starter in the future.
Doesn’t it kind of depend on how you look at it. Before the No-Hitter and Unit’s injuy, Dirty was on his way to AAA. Teams knew that and might have agreed. Sanchez could have been considered a bust. But Alderson was a highly-rated young arm who has a chance to be great. I think it sort of depends on who was the party asking for Sanchez/Alderson.

at a minimum, Sanchez was going to be a great bullpen arm, and at his maximum, he has #2 starter type of stuff.
I don’t even know what Alderson’s minimum is. But I know his maximum ain’t #2 starter. At least, I don’t think so. Maybe he is Greg Maddux
Sanchez has a much higher upside than Alderson
Lefties with his type of stuff are not a dime a dozen. Alderson is a righty with soft stuff. Sure, he has the potential to add more velocity but that’s a lot to bank on.
which is kinda my point. If we were all ready to trade Sanchez for Sanchez a few weeks ago, why are we so down on Alderson for Freddy? Is it because we THINK we could have gotten more for Tim?
I am upset that Sabean couldn’t capitalize more on Tim’s reputation to get us more in return, but I also think we should step back a little bit and think of the possibility that Sabean just traded less than what we considered acceptable for the same commodity.
I really think this is a fair trade all things considered.
It just seems that people were expecting a fleecing due to the Pirate’s excessive payroll dumping. But in response to that I’d say:
1. Neal Huntington is not your run of the mill Pirates GeneraLOL Manager. He seems to be halfway competent.
2. I’m not sure if the Pirates would have traded Sanchez if they didn’t get a fair value back. Thing is no one knows except for the Pirate’s FO how much money they have to play with.
I just wished that they had kicked over some money.

Most prospect analysts had a ceiling for him at a 3 or 4 starter, with the ceiling going down with his K rate. That’s not exactly a great best-case scenario. Also, TINSTAAPP. I think it’s a fallacy to assume that Alderson was a premier trade chip. How do we know that Sanchez wasn’t about as good as we could get? How many of us have watched Alderson pitch in AA? No one wants to hear it, but the organization knows more about Alderson that we do.

Even if this is true, it’s understandable that people are discouraged. We all wear the rose colored glasses for Giants prospects— it’s uncomfortable to learn that either a) our GM is (still) dumb, trading good young players for “veteran savvy” or b) one of our “top four” prospects isn’t quite as good as we’d all assumed. Either way, today is a bit of a sobering wake up call.
On the bright side, with under two days to go before the deadline passes, Sabes probably doesn’t have time left to trade away all three of MadBum, Posey, AND Neal.

STILL Batting cleanup: Bengie Molina
Sabean’s pathetically poor analysis of hitting has struck again. On a team that:
- is next-to-last in the NL in OBP
- is next-to-last in the NL in SLG
- is next-to-last in the NL in OPS
- is next-to-last in the NL in HRs
- is next-to-last in the NL in Runs Scored
- has Bengie Molina batting cleanup…
…Brian Sabean targets (and trades one of our top trade commodities for) …(wait for it)… a fair-to-middling #2 hitter? Freddy Sanchez will not bring significant help in any of the above categories. In five full seasons, Sanchez has OPSed over .800 one time. Even with that one season, Sanchez’ career OPS and OPS+ are just .756 and 98, respectively. Not very impressive, and definitely not the kind of hitter the Giants needed to really do some damage in the postseason (if they even make it that far). Furthermore, Sanchez, who has about 3/4 of his career at bats against RHP, has career splits of .711 OPS and 88 OPS+ vs. RHP.
The Giants are desperately in need of power hitting, and for the life of him, Brian Sabean simply is unable to figure this out. Unfortunately, Sabean LO-O-O-OVES intangibles, and the only hitting tangible he seems to go for is batting average. Furthermore, he seems to ALWAYS evaluate players based on their best (usually outlier) season. When Sabean looks at a guy like Sanchez, he’ll ALWAYS see a .344 hitting batting champ. And he paid the going rate for that type of hitter. Yes, no one knows how Alderson will pan out, but I can’t believe he had this low of trade value. I can’t believe that all Alderson could bring us was an overpaid, non-power hitting, non-difference-making, injured second baseman.
I’ve been pining for Sabean to be removed for five years now. I fear it will never happen. Nor will winning a World Series, as long as Sabean is around.
Why couldn't McCovey have hit the ball just three feet higher??

I’m watching Sanchez’s agent, Paul Cobbe, on Chronicle Live (wearing jeans and a t-shirt, yelch).
Is it just me, or are we not worried enough about Sanchez’s knee? Please observe the following, and I quote:
PAPA: So it’s a sprained medial collateral ligament. It’s not torn, partially torn. It’s just right now sprained.
COBBE: I don’t think it’s torn, no.
PAPA: Now if it was partially torn, or torn, he could be out 2 to 4 weeks.
COBBE: Well, that’s one of those tough things. Because it’s like talking about a pitcher’s shoulder, “Is it torn?” I think all of us have little tears. I think the point being that it was a non-invasive-necessary problem with his knee. Meaning, no surgery is necessary to fix this.

At the end of the day, it still comes down to this:
they needed to net a 2B no matter what. They did, but they overpaid (once again) to get an injured player, after the same Giants’ medical staff that botched Noah Lowry cleared Sanchez. Therefore it’s quite possible they just ditched a future Number 4/5 starter for a damaged 2B.
They still don’t have enough power, so I can only hope they make a move after 8/1 through someone else’s waiver move. Because if this is the team that is scrapping for runs on 8/15 with a damaged 2B, then Sabean blew this one bad enough to be fired.
Responsible for the last great homegrown Giants team.
My counter to Grant's argument
OK, I get Grant’s points, but am ok with this trade for the following reasons. Here are my thoughts on why I’m reluctantly ok with parting Alderson:
- Sanchez makes the team better offensively and defensively at a position where we had nuthin’ and nuthin’ in the pipeline for at least this year and next. If you think Frandsen, Burriss, Downs or Velez were going to be the answer this year or next, I guess we’ll agree to disagree. Those that argue that Frandsen never got a chance have an argument, but as I’ve said before, he’s always screamed “utility infielder” when I’ve seen him play.
- Adding Sanchez has a ripple effect #1. He moves Uribe out of the starting lineup lets him backup 2B, SS and 3B. Uribe in this role actually has value.
- Adding Sanchez has a ripple effect #2. Renteria moves can move down in the order, where his lack of offense wouldn’t screw things up so much in the 8-hole. With Sanchez hitting #2, our 3-4-5 hitters are more likely to come up with people on base/scoring position.
- It makes the Garko deal mean more. The Sanchez or Garko by themselves mean far less than they mean taken as a whole. Together, they upgrade two positions that have underperformed, and they upgrade is good through next year.
- We’re in this thing! Even after the bad start to the second half, the team is leading the Wild Card race. Everyone on earth knows if we don’t make it, it’ll be because there wasn’t enough offense. the opportunity to make the post-season is one no team in the Giants’ position should take lightly. If the opportunity for fabulous riches arises if you can get to a certain city by a certain time, you go for it, even if the airline tickets aren’t on sale.
- Did we really overpay? Many people here think we did, but there were a lot of doubts abut how good Alderson really is. I respect BruteSentiment’s opinion and he thought Alderson might have been overrated. If Brute thought that, believing other GMs agreed isn’t really a stretch. And after all TINSTAAP.
- Was Alderson really a “top 5” prospect? With Madum, Buster, Anvil, Neal and Wheeler, I think you’ve got a strong core of guys that are more or less “untouchable”. That kind of depth makes Alderson “touchable”. Sure it would have been nice to get more, but it was pretty obvious we were desperate for help at 2B.
- We still have pitching depth. I’ve been saying that with current starters, we’re in good shape if we can bring up a new starter each year. With Pucetas, Madbum, Sadler and Wheeler, we have a good pipeline to keep feeding the big team for the next couple of years. When Sabean’s always drafting pitchers, we always say "Maybe he can turn some of it into big league hitters. Snark aside, he just added two guys that are now among the top 4 hitters on our team.
Like I said, I think Alderson was a still price to pay, but not ridiculously so. We have an unexpected opportunity to contend for the post-season now and Sabean has made moves that give us a better chance. I see the logic.
My real complaint will be if Molina continues to hit #4. These trades allow Bochy to assemble something resembling a big-leage lineup when everyone’s healthy:
LF – Winn
2B – Sanchez
3B – Sandoval
1B – Garko
CF – Rowand
C – Molina
RF – Schierholtz
SS – Renteria

Agreed
I just logged on here to see what people were saying, feeling pretty ok about the deal, and posting as much on the Yahoo! article about the trade, and was surprised to see so much anger. I think this, combined with Garko (a first baseman who can actually hit on the road) significantly improves our lineup 1-9, and places an All-Star in a position currently occupied by a black hole. The cost? Two solid, but not great, pitching prospects. Not too bad, IMO.
I think the thing that kills me is how little was given up for Felipe Lopez – a player that has similar value to Sanchez but just 20 pts less of batting average.
I also don’t think we have pitching depth. Pucetas and especially Sadler should not be counted as depth.
Other than that, you make some good points.
Randy Winn is in time out until his OBP gets back over .330.
Pitching Depth
With Tim, Cain, Sanchez and Zito, there aren’t likely to be that many spots in the rotation opening up over the next three years. How much depth do we need?
My adopted Giant: "Raptor Jesus" Guzman
I think there is a difference between having guys to pitch in those spots vs. having pitching depth. If you have a team that doesn’t score a bunch of runs, you can’t live with a 3 and 4 that can put you in the hole before you even get an at bat. Zito and Sanchez can (and have) done that.
by Lars The Wanderer on Jul 29, 2009 9:15 PM PDT up reply actions
So when was Alderson going to take the #3 spot in the rotation and push back Sanchez and Zito?
My adopted Giant: "Raptor Jesus" Guzman
I am not sure you are being serious. Are you really implying that I thought that Alderson was going to step into the rotation immediately? If so, that certainly wasn’t my point.
All I am saying is that we need pitching help this season. The rotation has 2 guys that will keep you in the game and 3 that are a crap shoot. If we are going to start shipping out prospects, spend where it will make a difference: the rotation.
This “pitching depth” myth really needs to die. The Giants do not have pitching depth.

Here’s an example of just how much better Freddy Sanchez is:
If we’d had Sanchez all year we’d be 3 wins better, be 15 games over .500, be 4 back of the Dodgers and 3.5 games up on the wild card.
I know that’s an oversimplification & isn’t necessarily true, but it’s a good illustration of how much of an improvement he is.
Proud parent of Waldis Joaquin!
They have enough depth at A and AA that they could deal some of it to improve their offense at a time when they’re actually in position to grab a playoff spot.
My adopted Giant: "Raptor Jesus" Guzman
The rotation as it stands today will not get them to the playoffs. If the Giants want to believe they are in a position to go for it this year, then go for it. If you are going to start dismantling your farm system in an (imo, ill advised) effort to win the wildcard use those assets for real improvement.
The whole reason the Giants are in the position they are right now is their pitching staff. When a major piece of that is lost and you do nothing to address the issue, the concept of “going for it” this season is pointless.
I understand that the Giants need offense. I’ve been here watching the games with the rest of you mooks. Sanchez and Garko add maybe a win to the bottom line over the rest of this season. The back of the rotation will end up costing the Giants more than that.
by Lars The Wanderer on Jul 30, 2009 8:17 AM PDT up reply actions
Enough to fill out the last spot in the rotation plus whoever gets hurt.
Randy Winn is in time out until his OBP gets back over .330.
Why do you assume Sanchez will be good enough to stick in the rotation?
He’s never shown that.
GROUGTHINK ALERT
I didn’t assume that, but made the point that even if he doesn’t, there aren’t that many spots in the rotation opening up over the next 2 to 3 years.
My adopted Giant: "Raptor Jesus" Guzman
If he doesn’t stick in the rotation, that is a spot opened up right there.
by Lars The Wanderer on Jul 30, 2009 8:18 AM PDT up reply actions
Even though the Diamondbacks are way out it, I doubt they wanted to trade Lopez in the division without the Giants giving a lot.
yeah, but the Pirates aren’t in our division. There’s no reason to pay a higher price for same stuff.
Randy Winn is in time out until his OBP gets back over .330.
that’s great for them, but a thing isn’t worth whatever you think it’s worth, it’s worth what you can get for it.
Randy Winn is in time out until his OBP gets back over .330.

by RougeGorrila on Jul 29, 2009 9:24 PM PDT up reply actions
No, that’s true. You don’t really know what other teams thought. There are certainly reasons to be skeptical about Alderson.
I think that anyone who can hold his own in the Cal league at 19 has to be taken seriously. I’d have much rather hung on to him (perhaps to trade later) if his stock was that low at the moment.
And there were other solutions for 2B that need not have cost us a top pitching prospect.
Randy Winn is in time out until his OBP gets back over .330.
I gotta agree with Goofus. I’m not upset with the trade, and think it has some really good upside.
It's my blarg! Quick Pitch
Sabean’s goal is very clear. He is putting the lineup for 2010 together, with an upside of 2 month rental to get lucky this year.
Look at our lineup in 2010 with Posey stepping in for Molina and Schierholtz full time over Winn. I really think we can contend next year just as well as this year. A huge organization black hole disappeared.
I think the best part is that now Uribe can potentially take a lot of renteria’s playtime at short due to his elbow
some good points

I really like your analysis and could not agree more. Good job.
Perhaps Sabes gave up a bit much to get Sanchez ( typical Sabean MO) but it probably wont be equivalent to the Joe Nathan trade. Besides, we have Freddy through 2010 and do not have any viable options at 2b in the minor league system at the moment. This was a move not just for the present year but also for next.
Freddy’s offense may not be the type of bat that carries an offense, but he is a well rounded player who contributes at the plate as well as on defense. Lets just hope he can stay healthy.

After reading the above post quoting Sanchez' agent
about the condition of his knee, and also noticing that Frandsen left the Fresno game after 2 ab’s, it’s not possible that ass clown GM traded for a guy about to go on the DL…is it? I believe tomorrow would be Frandsen’s 10th day away, so he could come back. Only with Sabean would I consider such a scenario
Frandsen is done as a Giant
he is our Travis Buck. He pissed off somebody in the front office and will never see the light of day ever again with the Giants.
If Sanchez goes on the DL, the 10-day thing doesn’t matter and Frandsen can be called up.
Of course, if Sanchez goes on the DL, we’ll probably just stick with the current roster.

With Schierholtz out, we need the extra outfielder until Rowand can throw again. We don’t need three first basemen.

I think I’m kinda surprised if NOBODY can be had for the now useless bowker/guzman/frandsen
With Malice Towards Maria Shriver
I highly doubt that Bowker/Jesus/Frandsen was ever enough….when sabean said after the garko trade that he was willing to trade a “certain minor league player” (Alderson) and was waiting for two teams to make a decision…my guess is that it was Pittsburgh with Sanchez and DC with Willingham..
That being said, i wouldn’t be surpised if Sabean tries to get a 5th starter type..
I really hope that’s not true, because Willingham would have helped a lot more than Sanchez will. Why not wait until an hour before the deadline before pulling the trigger on Sanchez if you think there’s a chance for Willingham? Only if you prefer Sanchez, which would be, um, unwise.
I strongly suspect the Nationals decided that Alderson wouldn’t have been enough for any of their prized possessions, since the Red Sox had tried for Dunn earlier this year and were moderately shocked at just how stupid the demands were.
I think that’s probably right, but why wouldn’t you wait them out until an hour before the deadline? When they realize no one is meeting their price, they might come to their senses. It’s not like Pittsburgh had a ton of offers for Sanchez on the table.
I think my favorite overreaction to this trade but “but Velez is starting to hit!!!”

Well, I think, even among people who somewhat appreciate stats, worrying about defense is somewhat new. So I think people really don’t realize that Dunn’s defense is so bad that it nearly cancels his (admittedly prodigious) offensive output.

My worthless two cents
Ask me in two years. Love having Freddie at second, and have many doubts that Alderson is as good as advertised. Still, it would fit long standing Giant traditions to give away future stars for guys on the downside of their careers. At 31, I’ve got to believe Sanchez has at least a year and a half of quality left in him.
I have to admit, if it had been Posey or Bumgarner, I’d be lighting the torches to storm the Giant’s front office myself. With Alderson, I’ll wait until he is shutting out the major league club before I make a judgement.

Stupid comments for fun and profit
This one’s from Facebook. Surprisingly, there are no glaring grammatical errors:
all you sabean bashers are off base. Remember the last two trades with the pirates? Giants traded #1 Ryan Vogelsong and tossed in Armondo Rios for Jason Schmidt. How’d that turn out? What about the last trade of Matt Morris and his $$ for Rajai Davis? Alderson may or may not turn out, but we can’t just sit back and not make a move. I like the trade.
I just love this logic. Because the Giants ripped off the Pirates twice before, this trade must ALSO be a steal. Even though the Pirates have another GM and the players involved have basically nothing in common.
Also, what exactly was Ryan Vogelson #1 at?
And, then, finally, the old “WE HAD TO DO SOMETHING!!!!!!!” The same type of clear thinking that netted us such all-time great Giants as Ricky Ledee, Sidney Ponson, and Shea Hillenbrand.

I guess its me and Sabean vs 7000 other folks, but I like the Sanchez trade. Its worth trading a possible #4 starer in 2012 for an all-star professional .300 career hitter. Yes, Alderson is a good prospect but he’s not in the protected set of madbum, posey and angel.
But the trade deadline isnt over, and we have plenty of guys we can still trade with. Teahan seems like another pro, batting .293, who could play in the outfield. Even more .300ish lineup depth
a possible #4 starer in 2012
Wow. Just wow.

Adopted Giant: Fred Lewis, who can still draw a walk.
well, he’s not gonna displace tim or matt or madbum, so for us he’s at best #4. could he be a #2 for somebody else? maybe. could we have gotten more for him? perhaps but I cant think of any better fit for us for the next couple of years who is on the market right now. I doubt the Padres would move Gonzalez in the division. Scott Rolen might have been nice (but expensive) and I have no idea if they pursued that when talking to Toronto. (for some reason its always Alex Rios chatter)
First, he’s likely to be in the majors well before 2012. Second, you didn’t say “a fourth starter for us,” you said “a possible #4 starter,” which certainly seems to imply you think his ceiling is as a back of the rotation starter.
Also, isn’t Cain a free agent after 2011? So Alderson would be a THIRD STARTER AT BEST!!!!!!
Also, batting average in the absence of anything else isn’t a very good way to evaluate hitters.
Also, Mark Teahan isn’t very good.

The thing that bothers me most about this trade is just the appearance of it. The optics here are gross.
I very much agree with the FO sentiment that a postseason appearance this year is worth fighting for. I agree that Alderson was the right trade chip to dangle. I could be convinced that Alderson actually ain’t that good, and I could even be convinced that other teams know that Alderson ain’t that good, and that Freddy Sanchez was the tastiest morsel he was gonna net us. From a certain angle, in a certain mood, given certain caveats, I can possibly somewhat believe that an Alderson-for-Sanchez swap was in our best interest.
But here’s the thing. Well, actually, here are the things:
1) The Pirates were very motivated to move Sanchez and had no other likely suitors for him. We might not’ve been able to do better than Freddy for Alderson, but Pittsburgh definitely wasn’t going to be able to do better than Alderson for Freddy.
2) Alderson rated well on every prospect list you can name. Giants fans, understandably, grew attached to the idea of him.
3) The Giants have been burned by trading highly rated young pitchers in the past.
4) The acquisitions of middling aging hitters have been killing us lately.
5) The recent rise in pro-prospect rhetoric has been one of the main things keeping the fanbase from rioting.
All of those things make this trade very hard to swallow from a fan perspective. So if you’re Brian Sabean, and you know you’re going to trade Tim Alderson for Freddy Sanchez, you need to handle this thing carefully.
First of all, you need to try to get some softeners — either you get some money back from Pittsburgh or a middling prospect or two. Alderson’s a coup for them, and they know that, so make them pretty the picture up a tad for your fanbase. You should know a one-for-one won’t go over well. Moreover, act like this was hard for you. Act apologetic about trading Alderson, acknowledge that punting on the guy runs contrary to the current team philosophy, but say that this competitive year is worth making some painful sacrifices. Make it clear that this is predicated on fielding and lineup construction and competitive windows, not the usual .300/vet/fuck-the-prospects malarkey that’s led this team astray the last several seasons.
What was Sabean’s spin on this trade?
“Simply put, our long-awaited next move has finally been consummated,” Giants general manager Brian Sabean said. “A kid that has distinguished himself as an All-Star three out of the last four years and a batting champ within that time frame. The timing’s great.”
Calling the 31-year-old a “kid” is cute. But really, this is atrocious.
The problem is not just that we traded a valuable young piece for a less-valuable older piece. The problem is not just that we weakened our future without surely strengthening our present. The problem is not just that we look like the same ignorant yokels that we have so many times in the past. The problem is that Sabean sounds delighted about all of it. There’s no wink to the fanbase saying “don’t worry, this isn’t like the old times”, there’s no acknowledgement that there’s more to success than batting average. All you get is “batting champ”, “All-Star”, and the suggestion that adding a .770 OPS guy represents the consummation of something. As tone-deafness goes, this is about on par with Travis Bickle taking a girl to a porno on a first date.
It is possible — not likely, but possible — that Alderson for Sanchez is not a terrible trade for us. Still, it looks terrible, and that matters. The Giants have customers to satisfy, and they should know that most of the ardent ones will hate this move. The least they could do is to try to make those customers feel okay, that their concerns are being heard in ways they weren’t in years previous, and to signal that they have good reasons to override the worries the best and smartest Giants fans have about this. Those signals haven’t come. Is it ignorance or apathy? I don’t know, and I don’t care. But it’s fucking gross, and it’s troubling.

Some belated trade thoughts
I’m pretty disappointed about the trade & don’t really like it although suprisingly i’m not as angry about it as i should be. I’m not going to defend the trade as i don’t like it but i think there’s a few things that are being overplayed/underplayed in the (understandable) outcry against the trade.
1) Sanchez is a good player, a very good player in fact & the “the only thing he does well is hit for average” isn’t doing him justice. Apart from last year he’s been a 3 or 4 win player & that’s very good. Given our poor production out of 2B that’s possibly a 4 win improvement next year & 1.5 win improvement this year. Also i’ve seen a strange number of “but we could have had Willingham instead” comments when he’s generally a 2-3 win player and worse than Sanchez.
2) He’s got a minor injury & is currently day to day so saying he’s broken down is unfair. The medical staff have looked him over and given him the ok so it’s presumtuous to assume you know better than that.
3) I think people are overestimating the Pittsburgh effect and assuming that because it’s Pittsburgh we should have given up hardly anything. The fact that there were some weak packages rumoured doesn’t help either but assuming we should have got a good player for a bag of balls isn’t likely (although i do think we overpaid). Also, the LaRoche deal isn’t comparable at all, he’s nowhere near as good as Sanchez & is a free agent at the end of the year.
Like i say i’m not justifying the trade as i don’t like it & wouldn’t have made it but lets not overdo the rightous indignation by misleading the situation.

Frandsen update..
This bad news might have gotten to Frandsen, who lost his temper and was pulled from the game by manager Dan Rohn after flying out to end the second inning of Fresno’s 5-4 victory over Colorado Springs at Chukchansi Park.
Frandsen threw his bat in frustration after making the third out. As Frandsen removed his hitting gear, first-base coach Hensley Meulens stared him down and pointed to the dugout. Frandsen left the field and was replaced by Jake Wald at shortstop.
He should be happy he wasn’t traded to the Pirates

I don’t know whether Missing Barry is going to do an analysis on the trade like he did for the Garko trade but i did a quick rough calculation so as to determine the value of the trade.
Alderson is probably a top 26-50 ranked pitcher which according to the research works out to be $15.9M. If you were to be down on Alderson and say he’s a 50-75 ranked pitcher then he’d be worth $12.1M.
If we say Sanchez is worth around 4.5 wins over the duration of his contract then that works out to be worth about $20.5M. We’re due to pay him $10M over that time so his excess value is worth $10.5M.
What that shows is that the trade was a bad one and we lost out in terms of value. What it also shows is that it isn’t an OMG that’s a shocking, generational bad trade. I guess that probably matches my overall feelings are on the trade.

I’d say Joey, Pucetas, anyone? He just hasn’t looked like a major leaguer since his first two starts and if we’re getting serious about this WC race (I.E. trading your number 2 pitching prospect) we’re going to have to start making some changes on who’s in that spot.

screw the wildcard. we’re only 7gb and with our pitching and more lineup depth we can win the division if we apply ourselves
After our two-headed monster I’m not sure how good our pitching really is. If our bullpen can hold up I’d say it’s still a strength but losing Johnson really really hurts.

For me, it’s really about how Sanchez and Zito pitch in the second half of the year. I have no faith that RJ is going to come back this year and pitch anywhere near the level he was at the beginning of the year. And I would really like for Joey to be in the Miller role now. Long relief with an occasional spot start.

I'll put this out there...
I emailed a few people who might know…and as a site, we are way off base.
One such person said “Sabean was lucky to get Sanchez with Alderson right now.”
There’s a perceived value on this board about Alderson, and it is way off. His control was off. His velocity was down. His strikeout rate was plummeting. And his throwing motion was becoming more of a concern. And every scout that had been to the Eastern League for it had seen it.
"The knowledge of the game is inversely proportional to the price of the seat." ---Bill Veeck. •Now you can follow SFDugout.com on Twitter and Facebook!•
