Mainly, I'm venting here. For two season in a row, Rowand appears to be unwilling to go on the DL when he really needs to. Last year, he played through broken ribs, hurting his own performance and the teams. Now, he can't even throw a baseball and won't be able to for at least 4 to 5 days. Come on! we all know how tough you are Aaron. Go on the DL, please, so the Giants won't have to waste a bench spot on a hurt pinch hitter.
Rant Over.

Do we know how much say he (or any player) would actually have in a decision like that?

I don’t know, but I do remember in 2002 when every Giants’ outfielder had a hamstring strain, and Sabean blasted them on his radio show. It makes me think the players have more to do with it than I thought.

Maybe we'll get lucky
and his toe will get Aurilitis or his hip will develop Schierholzia

It’s the managements decision whether or not to send him to the DL & so it’s their fault, not Rowand’s. Players can’t be trusted when it comes to deciding such things as most naturally want to keep playing through injuries even if it’s not the best decision.

LOLRLYA clearly did not want to be DL’d but he was anyway. Players have no say in this at all.
