Sheehan Prescribes Solution for Giants Hitting Woes
Interesting trade proposals from Joe Sheehan, of which I think the deal with the Nationals is much more appealing. However, Sabean would have to admit that he is a retard for not signing Dunn in the off season without having to give up any trade pieces (lets not even mention orlando hudson).

He has more homers and almost as many RBIs as the entire Giants roster since the AS break. (I only know that because I have been watching him tear it up for my fantasy team lately.) His defense might suck, but 25 bombs and 70 something RBI for the worst team in baseball would sure look good the way the Giants have been hitting lately. I can only dream about what better pitches the Panda would see with that big meathead hitting behind him.
Don’t think the Nats would give him up for a reasonable price though, so it doesn’t really matter
or read the online bitching all spring about the dumb affection of Ginats Brasz for oafish vets over the youthful, aspiring Freddie Lewis, who was our left fielder as of the start of the season.
I note that Freddy Sanchez isn’t in tonight’s Pirates lineup, and wonder if that signals an imminent trade to someone, I hope us.
He should just walk across the field mid-game, right into our clubhouse and throw a Giants jersey on.

not alone.
…I’ve said it before, there are no metrics to describe how bad Adam Dunn is on defense.

How can you take Sheehan seriously?
He states in this article that Osiris Matos and Sergio Romo need to start playing a bigger role in the bullpen. Is this guy Rip Van Winkle? Matos hasn’t been on the Major league roster for 2 months, and he never was somebody that they planned to use in anything but mop-up games. Meanwhile, Romo has been the #2 setup man in the pen – a close 2nd to Affeldt for almost 2 months. I call that playing a major role.
Sheehan knows little about the Giants if he suggests we trade for Johnson and Dunn. Sabean has said that he won’t trade for a FA-to-be, unless it’s for nothing in return. The Nats are asking for more than 2 good prospects for Johnson in the theory that they’ll get a 1st round pick and a supplemental if he signs elsewhere in the offseason. As for Dunn, he hates to hit in AT&T. Check out his career stats there when he was with Cinci and AZ. Remember how psyched-out Rowand was by AT&T last year, well Dunn’s psyched-out even worse. That, and his horrid D, are the reasons Sabes didn’t try to sign him in the offseason (and Dunn wouldn’t have played here for twice as much money as the Nats gave him) – and that’s why Sabes has never considered trading for him this year.
Do some actual research above and beyond your stats before you float trade proposals like this Sheehan.

So considering everybody seems to think Sheehan and Carroll suck, has Baseball Prospectus lost its spot as the internet baseball darling?
Bruce Bochy would like you to look at the career numbers and stop complaining.
Dunn recently said in an interview that he likes AT&T Park and would have been happy to play and hit there. With the total lack of free agent leverage this offseason, there is no way he could have strong armed a deal that was double what he got from Washington. We could have used the Renteria money (total black hole of value) + a few million to get him.
I cannot believe he wouldn’t have rather played for a class organization (brzzzz) over the total cluster fuck that is the Washington Nationals. We could have stuck his lumberjack beard face at first base as a bridge to Villalona. Dunn swinging a tree trunk even with subpar defense I would take over having Bengie as our clean up hitter. Hindsight is 20/20 but I still think this move was pretty obvious at the time. Any educated observer knew we needed a bat in the offseason and didnt have a prospects at a few positions ready to play. I think 1st base and/or left field qualify. I rest my case.

No, I think first base and left field are two of the places where we needed to find out what we have at the major league level this year. It is much more valuable to get decent samples of the work of Lewis, Ishi, Bowker et al. than have a giant lummox who gives away as many runs as he creates but hits shiny dingerz.
Unless you actually think this year is the Giants best shot to be in the playoffs and not the early-ish stages of a total rebuild at the ML level.

A worthy sentiment
But I think most people knew that our players in the upper minors just weren’t that good, a position that’s proven to be justified for the most part.

I just think that while projections might be useful, they aren’t reality and actual data is invaluable. Nobody ‘knew’ a damn thing – even though I concede they had a pretty good idea…
I look at it like this year was and is a player evaluation year and this offseason will be an extremely important one for setting up the next 3-5 years. I’m not in the ‘get in the playoffs now!’ camp and don’t think Adam Dunn is a good fit for what this club needs right now (and he is certainly not my preferred ‘bridge to Villalona’).
