6 to 8 Scenarios or Names
"Sabean spent Sunday in the office hoping to improve the lineup choices for Manager Bruce Bochy. Sabean said he is "juggling six to eight scenarios or names. We're trying to bring a couple to a head. And we continue to call a couple teams who are holding hope they're in it or they've been reluctant to put their names in play.""
I was trying to put together a list of some of the names that Sabean might be talking about acquiring. The list below is the players I think the Giants should pursue ranked from most coveted (1) to "DO NOT WANT" (15) based primarily on position played, contract status and potential/ prior success at AT&T.
1. Victor Martinez 1B/C - big bopper with a good contract through 2010
2. Ryan Zimmerman 3B - good 3B and good contract through 2013
3. Brandon Phillips 2B - great defender and even better contract through 2012
4. Adam Dunn LF - Thump for next 2 years
5. Brian Roberts 2B - Ideal leadoff and basestealing 2B through 2013
6. Alexi Rios RF - Great tools, but expensive through 2015
7. Freddy Sanchez 2B - slick fielding and high avg 2B for next two years
8. Ryan Garko LF/1B - Good pop, good interview and probably won have to give up Alderson to get him
9. Nick Johnson 1B - Injury risk but bat would play well in AT&T FA after this year
10. Aubrey Huff 1B - Provides sock to this lineup, FA after this year
11. Mark Teahen 2B - Mr flexible, I still believe he can hit
12. Marco Scutaro 2B - decent bat with good OBP skills
13. Edwin Encarnacion LF - bat that could come for cheap
14. Josh Willingham LF - Cover your eyes defense
15. Jamey Carroll 2B - meh, should be a bench player on a bad team

Ryan Zimmerman will not be traded
and neither will Brian Roberts. both just signed long term deals and are a part of their respective clubs’ futures.

Willingham is much higher on my “list”, above Adam Dunn

I had Willingham above Holliday.
Favorable contact status is valuable.

I treated Holliday as a non factor in my head. I just want Willingham and Sanchez

I Have Three Targets And I Want Them All.
I want to upgrade at 1B with Ryan Garko, 2B with Freddie Sanchez, and LF with Josh Willingham.
My view is that we can get all three without having to trade any of what I see as the important prospects for our future (Buster Posey, Madison Bumgarner, Tim Alderson, Angel Villalona, Thomas Neal, Roger Kieschnick, Ehire Adrianza, and Rafael Rodriguez) or any of the current Giants that I see as important to 2009 and in many cases beyond (Lincecum, Johnson, Cain, Zito, Sanchez, Wilson, Affledt, Howry, Medders, Miller, Molina, Uribe, Renteria, Sandoval, Rowand, and Winn).
My view is that any of my three targets can be had for the trade partners choice of any position player and any pitcher in our system not in the above two lists. I further believe that we have the depth in our system to do this three times and thus get all three of these targets.

I would trade plenty of players on those two lists. Especially the second one.
"he walked 18; new league record! Struck out 18, another new league record! He also hit the sportswriter, the PA announcer, the bull mascot twice..."

We Are Buyers Not Sellers
Trading from the second list makes no sense when you are just one game out of the playoffs.

I would trade Winn, Miller, Molina, Uribe and Renteria. Addition by subtraction.

Rather have Dunn 3 times over willingham. I am ok with a walk, k or hr.

But are you OK with the defensive flubs?

Only if he brings a starting middle infielder named Marco or Aaron with him

For rios, Sosa yes, but alderson no. I would trade alderson for Phillips in a heart beat though
I like dunn because I think he would come relatively cheap say valdez.
Ideally one of those outfielders and sanchez for pucetas.
Winn
Sanchez
Sandoval
Rios/dunn
Garko
Molina
Rowand
Renteria

Better at least bring an MI with him.
To be serious the only reason the Jay’s trade Rios is because their fiscal house is in extreme disorder ( which it might) in that case it would be mostly about getting out from under the contract for the Jays because NO ONE is touching Wells. Wells contract makes Zito’s look reasonable.
That’s it! Katie bar the door for this 79 win team is star crossed! And I am loving it.

Lincecum for Rios.

Next target: Marco Scutaro or Freddy Sanchez
Scutaro is a free agent after this year, so it really shouldn’t cost that much to get him (a low A pitcher?). Sanchez will likely be under contract next year once his at bat option vests. He’s more pricey ($8M in 2010), but given that money situation, he’s not likely to cost a lot in a trade either, and the Giants will have plenty of money to spend next year.

Scutaro at SS would tighten up the infield D a lot. I woulder how Garko is at fielding the bounce pass throw from SS?
