Keep Preaching This Truth Brother. One Day It Just Might Sink In. :-)

Seriously though their is really nothing wrong with these moves. Sabes is trying to find lighting in a bottle by continuing the Fresno shuffle with the last couple of 13 man position player roster spots. If these guys perform as bad as so many hear fear they will not be doing any worse then the 2 the are replacing and therefore no loss. On the other hand if we are lucky and do catch lighting in a bottle with one or both of them having hot bats then we have gained alot. These moves are in fact moves that can only make the Giants better in the short hall with almost no downside risk.

All this nashing of teeth is indeed just just flat blind hatred of Brian Sabean.

Every Other Post In This Fanshot Has Been Nothing But Raw Emotion.

When I see some facts to support a view that these moves are bad with no upside I will have read my first post supporting this view that is not “blind hatred”.

by giantsrainman on Jul 27, 2009 6:10 PM PDT up reply actions

The basic flaw with the “lightning in a bottle” approach (apart from the weirdness of assuming that a hot streak against AAA pitchers will carry over against MLB pitchers) is that hot streaks don’t exist. As far as anyone can tell, it’s just random fluctuation. If you have two hitter of more or less the same talent, the one who hasn’t had a hit since June is just as likely to go on a tear as the one who has gone 14 for his last 30. So chasing hot streaks is doomed; you’re just going to catch the regression.

Now, it’s possible that the Giants aren’t just going by stats. Maybe the coaches have seen something in Velez’s and Guzman’s swing that makes them think these guys are ready to hit in the majors. If that’s the case, they need to explain why they have been so utterly wrong so many times before — about Bowker, about Downs (twice), about Burriss (coming out of spring training), about Rohlinger (last year), and on and one. All of these were guys who had been on a tear before they got called up, and they promptly flopped.

bah, baggs called it:
Sabean said Guzman’s name has been discussed, but he added that his defense remains a major concern. And I’d add that the Giants usually try to put their best defensive team on the field when Lincecum pitches.

Eugenio Velez is hitting just below .300, too. If the situation gets dire, he could get another look at second base. But as we know, defense is a teensy bit of a concern with him, too.

Not to speak for Evan, but I believe the point would be that since Lincecum strikes out a lot of batters you’ll have fewer balls in play, so good fielders have less value. That would be the time to use worse fielders who are better hitters, in order to shore up the offense.

by taliesin on Jul 27, 2009 4:34 PM PDT up reply actions

Exactamundo. You always have to find the right balance between offense and defense — when Lincecum’s pitching, offense becomes more important because the fielders just won’t have as much to do. With Sadowski, the opposite.

by Evan on Jul 27, 2009 4:37 PM PDT up reply actions

If you have a pitcher who gives up more batted balls (and thus hits and therefore runs) don’t you need a good offense too? Really you need a team that can hit and field at all times, but that is like wishing for a beer-making unicorn on your birthday.

I don’t remember when/where, but I seem to remember hearing that Guzman to LF was a possibility.

Though he probably wouldn’t bat 2nd.

I had to email my media contact in Fresno to get the 411 and he hasn’t yet heard anything concrete on Guzman.

Is there any point to any of these moves? Does it even make a trade roster fit easier in some way or is it just another exercise in absurdity?

The Bowker one, yes.
The Velez one, no.

by Natto on Jul 27, 2009 5:07 PM PDT up reply actions

It might be because

Velez is Switch

Uribe is Right, Downs is Right, Frandsen is Right, Burriss is hurt.

They might just be looking for a lefthanded bat at second against lefties. Not saying I agree with it, but that might be what they are thinking.

Id personally perferm Brock Bond over Velez. Switch hitter currently hitting .352.

Lincecum has got to be glaring at the “Velez – LF” section of the lineup. That shit cost him an ERA title.

by kaliber on Jul 27, 2009 6:12 PM PDT up reply actions

This is another joke lineup, right?

Velez in left? Does Bochy realize that being a switch hitter isn’t the same thing as hitting well against lefties?

Because left-handed hitting Schierholtz outhits switch-hitting Velez against left handed pitching in pretty much any comparison you choose.

Guzman was just a stop gap for Ryan Garko and i am betting Velez is just a stop gap for Freddie Sanchez and/or Josh Willingham.

by ktice on Jul 27, 2009 10:02 PM PDT up reply actions

Seriously?

You think the Giants called Guzman up to start one game against a lefty? They couldn’t run Aurilia out there instead? And they were so sick of Matt Downs they couldn’t keep him around another, what, four days until the trade deadline?

Is there any move the Giants have made all year that anyone could criticize without receiving your “blinded by hate” shtick? Or can Sabean do no wrong in your eyes?

If they called them up as a stop gap before trades then they’re stupid but i’m guessing they called them up as it made sense (to them) & there was no guarentees that trades were going to go through.

It’s a bit late for this discussion but i’m not overly bothered by the moves. Bowker doesn’t really make sense on the roster with the other LH outfielders we have whereas Guzman is more useful as a RH 1B. It’s superfluous now with Garko coming though.

I’m not great fan of Velez but not that bothered by him coming up in place of Downs. I just can’t get worked up about swapping a couple of poor players for each other even if it’s bizarre given Downs has only just come back up. I’m guessing the reason was they wanted additional cover in the outfield with Rowand & Schierholtz nursing injuries.

Proud parent of Waldis Joaquin!

by GiantFan on Jul 28, 2009 1:08 AM PDT reply actions

That's all true...

…but Bowker was just as redundant when they brought him up, and Downs just as unlikely to be a big league hitter.

It just seems like the way they’ve managed the last 2 roster spots this year, none of the young guys has gotten enough playing time to really get a fair evaluation, and a high-pressure situation for them is made even more so by knowing that 10 bad ABs will buy them a ticket back to Fresno. Meanwhile the Giants have gotten no more production from Frandsen or Downs than they would have if they’d just kept Burriss.

Meet my new son: Sundrendy Windster, on the Curacao-SF express (via Arizona).

by EliminateMe on Jul 28, 2009 8:34 AM PDT up reply actions

True, although Bowker was mainly called up as we had the extra roster spot (due to not needing the 5th starter) and was aiming to provide an offensive lift as he was in form. That always struck me as a short term measure that was going to have to be adressed in the end & it’s been addressed now.

You’re right though, they’ve chopped and changed in a few areas so often that it’s been very puzzling & have been trying to catch lightning in a bottle rather than having any conviction in their decisions.

Proud parent of Waldis Joaquin!
