3-7 after ASB a good thing for Giants?
I wanted to throw out this idea which I know initially will turn some people away but hear me out.
While there is nothing worse than your favorite team losing 3-7 right after the AllStar Break to start the 2nd half of the season, maybe there is some silver lining.
Maybe this losing streak isnt a "good thing" per say but maybe it helps us in the long run. Maybe this 3-7 Road trip actually is a positive in that it forces the giants brass to stop drooling at our first half record and really see what type of anemic offensive team we have. For the entire first half, we were all blinded by our pitching and panda's rise to all most all star status. But now, it seems the giants negatives have become very clear very quickly and everyone is waiting to see how the giants react. Rumors swirl around victor martinez (featured today 7/27 in ESPN's rumor central). But who knows whats legit and whats just heresay.
Regardless this 3-7 road trip came at perfect timing, right before the trade deadline. There is nothing we can do to take back our losing streak, only things we can do to avoid repeating it.
Wake up giants management. Its your move. And all of us will be watching

And from reading your title, I had the exact opposite thought: “Maybe we won’t make any trades because we’ve been so terrible!”

Exactly
I thought this was going to be a “Finally! Now that we’ve been exposed as pretenders, we can breathe easier that Sabes won’t trade away the future in a futile attempt at being a contender” type of post.

to clarify
I would much rather sacrifice a 3-7 losing streak, putting a fire under the asses of management, resulting in a trade for a bat for the future than muddling around .500 and keeping our same tee ball offense everyday. I am actually NOT in the mindset that this is “our year.” More of the mindset that maybe this will help us get our offense on track for the future.

I agree with this post. The offense sucks and any help it will get from the minors is a long way from now. Playing poorly right before the deadline is going to force Sabean to go out there and do something. I doubt he will overreact, because he hasn’t overreacted in years. I’m hoping the overreaction comes from Neukom, and it’s in the form of him increasing payroll. Teams will deny it right up until the trade is made, because they’re looking to get the best package they possibly can, but I believe there’s plenty of teams, (led by the Pirates) who are going to dump salary before 4pm Friday for whatever they can get.

Still in despair.

panic trades
seem to happen when the mentality of the organization is must win it all now or else… the giants dont seem to have that mentality IMO

Neukom issuing the “stand pat” order – $0.
Neukom overreacting to trade/sign big hitter – $20 million.
Neukom overreacting to fire Sabean – priceless.

I’m cool with no trades, and a fade out of the Wild Card race this season. The Giants aren’t catching the Dodgers, and the odds of winning the WC anyways aren’t anything more than “negligible”. Keep it going. This is beyond what we wanted this season. Next season is the time to really start getting excited. It will hurt watching the collapse, just try to maintain some level of patience. Think of the rest of this season as though you’re getting your teeth pulled out without novocaine, but next season your teeth will be replaced with a beautiful set of platinum GRILLZ

Look, I understand the skepticism and pessimism
I really do. I’d put the Giants chances at making the playoffs at around 20% or so (off the top of my head).
But how could you be a fan of the Giants and want them to fade out of the race, content to look forward to next year and future years? The Giants have a shot at the playoffs. And, they can improve that shot by upgrading a spot or two. If it doesn’t cost them a significant amount of the farm system and they can keep the player(s) they get beyond this year, then of course they’ve got to pull the trigger.
It actually appears as if this is what Sabean is doing this year. This is fine with me. If he doesn’t end up doing anything, I can live with that. But I can’t fathom WANTING the Giants to do nothing.

I don’t WANT them to fade out of the race. I expect them to fade out of the race, as I just don’t think they have the horses this year. Next season, we get Posey up here, maybe a free agent, maybe a trade in the offseason, maybe give Bumgarner or Alderson a taste, now we may be seeing something good.
If they stay in the race this season and make the playoffs without mortgaging the future, then a salut.

Maybe a good thing
Trades aside…It seams like in past years we played decent after the ASB, only to fall apart in Aug/Sep…Maybe this year we’ll suck in July and Early Aug; turn it around in September as the Dodgers and Rockies slump? wishful thinking.

3-7 is never a good thing
i for one don’t understand why so many fans would settle for what we have got now, and don’t care about trying to make the playoffs this season. is that not the point of playing the game? winning? making the playoffs? and once you get to the playoffs, trying to win it all?
also, as a fan, don’t ya wanna be excited? have something to root for and get excited for in august, september, and possibly october?… if so why settle for status quo?
imo, the team worked too hard in the first half to put themselves in position to win the wild card race. i think it would be a bit of a slap in the face to some players, if management doesn’t make a move to improve the offense/team. the team knows the offense is a big problem, so i am sure some players are praying and hoping sabes can bring somebody in to help them out. especially the pitching staff, it does not help a pitchers mind set if they are already pressing themselves on holding the opposing team to 1 run or less before they even take the mound.
bottom line! we need offense! now and for the future! we don’t know when our young guys will be up, and we don’t know how effective they will be.
Advise to SABES, make a move! don’t mortgage the future, but make a positive/offense iprovement move!

The problem is that is that it is not easy to make the current team significantly better without mortgaging the future.

agreed
bumgarner & posey should not be touched. i would only consider moving ONE of them in an Adrian Gonzalez type trade, but we all know that won’t happen.
with that said, i am personally ok with moving 1 maybe 2 of our other top prospects ( alderson, villalona, noonan, etc.) , not all of them. however, it has to be the right deal.
these aren’t my expectations of how it will play out, just wishful thinking/hoping. i know it will take a big prospect package to land a bat or two that will considerably improve our offense.

3-7 isn’t a good thing, but it is the Giants. How many of these current players would be starters on a true division-winning team? Which position players would the Cardinals or Phillies or Dodgers like to swap with us?
Bottom line, we have too many holes in our lineup to fix in one year. Or two years, realisticaly. IF we make it to the playoffs this year, great! If not, as now seems likely, then we continue to build for the future – always looking to make trades or sign free agents that make sense within our overall plan, of course.
Drafting our way to the top: change we can believe in!
