Who is the whipping boy now?

Baggs' post game wrap was basically a post road trip wrap, where Sabean took stock and laid blame.  And his vet love oozes all over the page and then he names the primary culprits for the struggling Giants offense: the young players, all crudely lumped into a single mass of fail:

"It's not the at-bats vs. what they look like, and that teams have been successful getting him out," Sabean said of Frandsen, who hit .128 in 39 at-bats. "And we've seen the same thing from (Travis) Ishikawa and (Fred) Lewis and Schierholtz and (John) Bowker, who hasn't been nearly as comfortable as we thought he'd be. None of that has helped the situation."

Bowkermania never flowed through my veins, but his struggles are still a surprise.  Yet it's a pretty small sample and is he really the problem?  Are the young guys at fault?

The team batting average for the road trip was .218.  How bad did the kids do?  Ishikawa is my guy, so I'll pick him from the bunch to defend.  He entered the road trip with a .269 average, and left the road trip with a .269 average (OBP and SLG did go down over the road trip, and AVG is a pretty hollow stat, but I have it available for me from the article).  Similarly, Schierholtz maintained .295 average and hovered around OBP/SLG of 325/425 over the road trip.  Not great numbers for either of them, but NOT THE PROBLEM (if the problem is a .218 AVG).

Of the vets, Winn stayed consitently classy but punchless (.711 OPS) and Fred Lewis should demand a trade to Colorado after his little revival there.

Who does Sabes want back?  Rowand went 1 for 17 (Must of the suck coming before the bruise).  Renteria just managed to maintain an AVG above 250, OBP above 300 and OPS over 620, flirting with lower numbers throughout the road trip.  Molina ... well he still is making tons of outs.

Bowker, Downsie, Molina and Uribe can take a big part of the blame in my book for the dismal offense this road trip.  Too many outs.  Who do you blame (aside from that stupid purple dino or the other teams' talent)?  Who is the whipping boy now?  Who is the object of your scorn? Look back on the road trip and fill in the blank "Ah, sh**, ____ is up again. Guess I'll hit the can and grab a beer/nachos/soda/pop."  Who is your blank?  Who do you dump?

good post. I got the same impressions (as did pretty much everyone else, looking at some of the other threads) reading Sabean’s comments. My only hope here is that he’s protecting the vets but fully realizes that they’re at fault at least as much as the kids are. Maybe Sabean, like Kruk and Kuiper know in his heart that the veterans suck but doesn’t want to criticize them openly. Kids will take the criticism and try to play harder, while the vets with the guaranteed contracts will tell him to shut the fuck up.

Still my whipping boy: Armando Benitez.

Actually, I think one of the Situational Whipping Boys™ has to be Bengie batting 4th. Move him to a proper lineup slot, and he wouldn’t be my whipping boy anymore.

And a Behavioral Whipping Boy™ is all that first-pitch swinging that prevents us from straining opposing pitchers, seeing what they have, letting them make a mistake, learning to see the ball better, and all the other mind-numbingly obvious benefits of plate discipline.

Color me surprised that Sabes would call out players by name for the assignment of blame in the middle of a very positive season. I would think that our batting coach, Mr. Lansford, would have to shoulder a large part of this blame. When the young players go up to the plate a-hackin’ time after time, looking clueless and like they have no idea what they’re doing, one has to wonder who prepared them and why they aren’t getting better over time.

Also, I can’t believe that he’s lumped Frandsen in with guys like Ishi, Flew, and Nate. Sure, Kevin has been disappointing, but it’s not as if they’ve given him more than 8 consecutive ABs, or let him play in more than 2 games in a row at any time this season. While the other 3 guys have had plenty of chances (Nate only in the past 8 weeks) to sink or swim – especially Ishi. Is there now any more doubt who is responsible for the shafting of Frandsen? Only in Sabean’s twisted mind could he think that Frandsen is somebody to single out for blame when he’s only had 39 ABs over 3 different call-ups. Not to mention the fact that Frandsen wasn’t even on the team for the entire roadtrip.

The last thing that I want to emphasize is that I think everybody’s overreacting to this bad roadtrip. Remember the 2 horrible roadtrips we had back in April (LA and SD) where we only won 1 game, and the one in May (SD and Seattle) where we almost got skunked? Well we survived those and ended up leading the wild-card race before the all-star game. This current trip was just a case of our players all going into a slump at the same time – this happens to all teams at least once or twice a year over a long season. I’m sure we’ll wake up now that we’re back home. Cheer up. We’re still 6 games over .500 and only 2 back in the wild-card race even after the roadtrip debacle – and we have Timmeh and the Cain man pitching 2 of our next 3 games!

Frandsen

This road trip converted me into an anti-Bochy guy, and I think your point about Frandsen goes right to the heart of why I feel that way. Set a fucking line up Bruce, and allow players to play INTO a spot. If a guy has an O-fer don’t sit him the next freaking night! Especially if your option is Aurillia, and Torres!!! The match-up shuffle is NOT working, and it is hurting the younger players who need to get at-bats.

In Little League a manager sets a defense and a line-up and sticks with it. If one of the bench kids starts to perform, and one of the regulars consistently struggles, then you make a switch. But you don’t pull a kid who has a 0-fer for somebody who completely sucks.

Who is the whipping boy?

How about this—

None of those figures was out of character for a team that has failed all season to hit for power, work counts and get on base. The Giants are seeing the fewest pitches per plate appearance (3.60) among major league teams. Their .306 on-base percentage also ranks last. They swing at the first pitch 34 percent of the time — more often than anyone else.

Seems to me like an organizational problem. A fish rots from the head.

by joe t on Jul 27, 2009 8:06 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Seems to me like his comments are aimed to try & light a fire under the younger players & encourage them to perform better rather than having a go for the sake of it.

And i’m not sure even if that’s not his motivation that it’s a pro-veteran anti-youngster stance as much as saying he expected better from some of them. I’m sure he’s dissapointed with some of the veterans as well but he’s not one to overly criticise veterans publicly (although i’ve never understood why, whether it’s a respect thing, or that he doesn’t feel it motivates them)

I think it’s probably more a case of letting them know that if they don’t improve their performance that we’ll look to make moves (either externally or internally) otherwise why forewarn that you’re thinking about moves when you could just make them or wait until you have made them.

Of course if it’s followed up by those type of moves (which i’m certainly not discounting) then we can get the pitchforks at the ready, but i don’t think it’s important to overreact now, especially given Sabeans history when it comes to making comments. It’s not exactly uncommon for him to misdirect or use the press just like it’s not uncommon for him to make stupid comments that seem mindboggling.

But 2008 was the mean AL’s fault. It was perfectly reasonable to assume that a return to the NL would revitalize Renteria. Seriously, why this guy didn’t get an incentive-laden contract is beyond me, position scarcity be damned.

I have to say that the idea of signing Renteria before the season was certainly defensible (though probably not for quite so much money) and that I think he’s probably more of a .700 OPS hitter than a .620 OPS hitter but still. It hasn’t been good but for some reason he gets a free pass.

I understand that the Giants were in a bad position with no own SS prospects and very few available free agents so I wasn’t against this signing either. I just believe it would have been possible to use Rent’s horrible 2008 against him and force him to sign for less guaranteed money.

Let’s not forget that Rowand was awful on this trip. If Rowand hits at all, the giants split the road trip. The only sane thing Sabean said is it wasn’t the results from the young guys but how “they looked.”

Funny though, how the results show no one had a worse trip than Rowand. I guess the kids should stop swinging at pitches that almost hit them, and instead swing at sliders away in the dirt. Because thats how all these gritty veterans don’t get it done.

It's this kind of statement about the young guys

that makes me despise Sabean. Does he in any way understand that it takes more than a half-season of sporadic at-bats to decide on young players. I had been pleasantly surprised to this point that the young guys have gotten the playing time they have.

But now, a bad road trip close to the deadline, allows Sabean to let his true feelings be known. I am so TIRED of his act. He’s a bully. Just like many of you have mentioned, the vets on this team are the main problem, but they can tell him to fuck himself and take their guaranteed $$. Young guys dare not respond for fear of ending up like Frandsen, who had the stones to actually say he was tired of being jerked around by this asshole.

Franchise, Cain, and Panda are prodigies…They required no patience or development. They are the exception. Sabean has no use for developing young players. This guy has produced exactly what in his 15 years that makes him so job secure.

by BigDaddyK on Jul 27, 2009 10:20 AM PDT reply actions   1 recs

Sabean is a dumbass

the way they handle these guys is atrocious. This season they should be getting all sorts of playing time. Despite have a much longer and more successful track record than Burriss, Frandsen got sent down and tore up AAA while Burriss was barely hitting the ball out of the infield for 200 MLB at bats. Then Frandsen comes up and b/c he didn’t go 4 for 4 in his first couple of games, he’s the new whipping boy and is getting sent down. then the fuckers call up Matt Downs to replace him for no apparent reason. Give me a fucking break.

The problem is that these young guys know that they’re one bad game away from being benched or sent down to AAA. that’s no way to treat a young player. They need to know that if they have a bad game or 2 they won’t lose their playing time. That’s called giving a guy a chance and Bochy and Sabean have absolutely failed to do that with Frandsen, Bowker and to some extent Nate. They will become better players with extended playing time. If not, then at least we know what they’re worth as players (not much) and can move on.

A rebuilding season like this one is the perfect time to try this approach and despite our winning season so far, the team still needs to let young guys play and see what they can do. If they’re still in the WC race late, it’ll be even more beneficial for these guys to be playing in meaningful games down the stretch, which will pay dividends in subsequent seasons.

Bonds stands alone.

While I agree about a lot of the comments in this thread, at the same time I’m not really going to cry about what was said by Sabean here. I’m about 1000% sure most of these “young” guys are never going to amount very much in the major leagues or for the Giants for that matter. If they want to prove us wrong and step it up than by all means. But I’m not going to hold my breath. I’d rather wait for the REAL young prospects like Buster and Neal and whoever else wants to break out to join Pablo in fielding a good team in the next couple of years.

by Hobbes2d on Jul 27, 2009 11:27 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Yeah

Of the young guys mentioned, I think Nate has decent chance as an everyday player. I think Bowker and Lewis might have a slim chance, but think they’re both destined to be role/bench/platoon guys. I don’t see Frandsen or Downs as anything but backups.

A real prospect like Neal had better hope

he doesn’t go through a 2 for 25 early on under the Sabean regime. They have no $$ invested in him like they do Posey, and therefore he will be subject to the same “expectations” as every other young player under Sabean. In other words…produce immediately or be subject to benching, demotion, and having to listen to Sabean run his fat yap in the papers. All the while, Ryan Freel or whatever gritty vet Sabean is blowing at the time, OPS at .450 without a word said.

Sabean is my whipping boy

because Rowand and Renteria aren’t on the DL like they should be. This year, the player injury handling has been horrid. Joe martinez and Randy Johnson had to be on the DL for obvious reasons, but there have been several veterans who have been hurt and out for 3-4 games at a time and the organization just lets the team have 0 bench for days at a time. Rowand and Rent have been hurt most of the road trip, but rather than let them get healthy so they can hopefully perform better, Sabean would rather have them gamer it out and go 0-4. At least if Rowand were on the DL, Bowker would see regular ABs for 2 weeks and we would have a better idea of what we have, plus the offense might improve if the players were allowed to get healthy before resuming full PT.

His veteran fetish (Renteria’s done well? Really?) is frustrating, and I’m terrified which FA the Giants are going to chase this year and pay too much to. Renteria, Rowand, Zito – at some point, stop giving goddamn Brian Sabean money to do these deals!

But seriously, I hereby call for the McC powers, long may they reign, to ban the phrase “he batted .300 in Fresno” from this site.

I’d like to think it’s just cartoony stats generated from playing in Salt Lake, Vegas, Reno, Fresno, Colo. Springs… but I don’t know enough about the performance of “[insert.300AAAbattername]mania” in other systems to know for sure. In any event, I’m glad Burriss broke his foot and hope he ends up in CT on the off chance he can actually develop as a hitter, unlike pretty much everyone that plays for the Mayors*.
