McC Night at the Yard: This Monday Night!

Alrighty then!  The night of our big annual meet-up is just around the corner.  Howtheyscored hasn't been this excited since the night he almost lost his virginity!

Here's the people scheduled to appear: Grant, Howtheyscored, Natto, Walrusman, Goofus, The Mayor of 311, Kitspool, Groug, tk, BaronVonCurrentEvents, BruteSentiment, jponry, Delorean, Mrs. Delorean, SofaKingMike, Mrs Goofus and jcb9.  In addition,  jctgamer, Merkin, SFGuy, positiveeuphemism, cornball and Gabafnerhagen have all indicated that they'll probably be there.  Did I miss anyone?  Speak up!

Because of my careful advance planning, we've ended up picking a special night for two reasons.

  • Our favorite NL Cy Young Award winner is scheduled to start
  • The team will be doing a pre-game tribute to Sue Burns

As the rules of tradition dictate, we'll be meeting at Zeke's Bar & Grill at the corner of 3rd and Brannan.  Plan on showing up at between 5:30 and 6:00.  In order to be at the game in time to pay homage to Mrs. Burns, we'll be leaving Zeke's about 6:30.

Last year, we all gathered around a big covered pool table in the middle of the bar.  With 20+ people again planning on showing up, we'll need plenty of room, so if you get there first, try to hold that area.

Everyone is welcome, even if you can't make the game.

Once again, special thanks to Kitspool and The Mayor for contributing tickets, which means even more McCoven are getting comped seats.

Well...

Thanks to the contributions of Kitspool, The Mayor and…ahem…me, we’ve got 15 people sitting in very good seats for the game. The trade off would be all those people would be paying for their seats, which wouldn’t be as close to the action. For those not benefiting from the free seats, the current plan allows them to find seats that meet their budget.

As I said a couple weeks back, that McCovey Loft box that Kruk and Kuip did the broadcast from would be sweet as hell, but would mean enough people would need to pony up serious scratch and one person would need to be responsible/on the hook for the money.

Maybe next year, we could find some bleacher seats for a large group. I think the larger the group the less likely we’ll be watching the game and just drinking, talking and showing LOLcats.

Let me be the first to extend regrets.

or perhaps one of those cheap view reserved seats (and not necessarily way in the corner, where I won’t sit).

by SFGuy on Jul 26, 2009 11:38 PM PDT up reply actions

I get your point...

…but we were able to secure great seats for Grant, the Mods and a whole bunch of long-time, regular McCoven. We’ve got five people sitting in the owners section, eight more in rows 24 and 26 and two more in real nice View Reserved tickets. Other than the people who dontated the tickets, they’re all sitting there for free.

This is the 4th year we’ve done this and I’m guessing most of us are pretty happy with the way it’s working out and where we’re sitting. I myself will admit to being spoiled and not interested in moving out to the bleachers or upper-deck left field.

If you’d like to take on the risk/responsibility of getting a head count of committed people, reserving a block of tickets, collecting money and distibuting tickets for a similar event, feel free. It’s a headache I’m not willing to take on.

I pointed out that, even for me, upper deck left field is unacceptable as I sit near home plate upstairs. I just thought it would be fun to sit with every one I talk to all game long here instead of separating into about 5-6 different locations..

by SFGuy on Jul 27, 2009 2:34 PM PDT up reply actions

ELITIST

Seriously, though, I quite like the bleachers. In left field, at least, the view ain’t bad at all, and while there are assholes, the worst behavior I’ve seen at Phone Company Park was in Upper Box, not the bleachers.

"View," to me, means able to see the plate, specifically able to discern balls/strikes and maybe even the pitch.

Therefore the bleachers are unacceptable to me.

As for the nonsense about “real” fans sitting in the crappiest seats versus “need a pulse” fans who sit in nicer seats, I will say I was pointing out behavior, not sincerity of fan credentials. Bleacher fans tend to be less attentive, standing up at random intervals, drunker, etc etc. Great— if that’s fun for folks, then by all means, have fun. I personally want to (a) see the plate, and (b) be around people who are civilized enough to not spill beers on Baron’s mom and to know when the hell to sit down.

Forsan et haec olim meminisse iuvabit... Maybe.

by Mayor of 311 on Jul 27, 2009 1:11 PM PDT up reply actions

The areas where you can accurately determine balls and strikes in all cases are quite limited, but I’ve never sat anywhere in Phone Company Park where I couldn’t see home plate or tell the difference between a slider and a fastball.

I'm officially out

I have a bunch of family out from Louisiana and we are doing a big dinner tonight. So instead of having a beer and enjoying a beer and a game with a group of people I’ve never met but talk to everyday, I’ll be having dinner with a group of people that I’ve met a bunch of times but rarely speak to – funny how that works.

I’m still rocking the orange polo in the office today for Sue. Have a blast guys.

No need

I grew up watching Grandma make it so I know the family recipe… unfortunately it’s not really a recipe. Nothing is measured so it would be hard to explain in writing. I can’t think of a way to describe the proper thickness of a roux without actually showing someone… maybe I’ll make a video and post to youtube or something.

One of my favorite will-certainly-be-forgotten moments of the game was when Grabow threw like 8 balls in a row and started whining about the mound, so it takes the groundscrew like 10 minutes to fix it up and then finally he starts pitching again… and throws two pitches nowhere near the plate.

I’m home. A fine time was had, although next year I need to weasel my way into one of those elitist McCoven seating areas. I didn’t have anyone to share my sparkling gameday-style wit with. Sad.

A couple of notes:

- I don’t know if y’all who were watching on tv/listening to the radio were aware of this, but after that long-ass delay with the pitching mound, when Tim came back up, he immediately kicked up the area they were working on. Which got a big cheer.

- Eugenio Velez is really good at hitting weak ground balls.

- The bottom of the second was the fucking strangest thing I’ve ever seen.

- I’ve come to sort of hate Bengie Molina and I may have yelled uncomplimentary things about him after his last at bat. Perhaps something about how it’s not actually against the rules to sometimes take a pitch, along with a bitter, lamenting, “That’s our cleanup hitter!”

- Upper Box Section 314 is a damn fine section. Excellent views, and right by the upper deck Orlando’s.

Okay, a couple more notes

- The crowd seems to get very excited over watching older Asian-American couples kissing.

- The guy who did one of the between-innings games was Josh from Oakland. SPEAKING OF IDENTITY THEFT.

Okay, one more note

- I don’t even know who half the people in the damn Pirates lineup are. Any time I start feeling sorry for myself for being a Giants fan, I stop and think that it could be worse: I could root for the fucking Pirates.

On a related note, I saw one guy wearing an Andy Van Slyke jersey.
