Poll: What should be done?

What should the Giants do to maximize their potential this year?  (moderators, feel free to delete if this is superfluous - I did a quick check, but I've been out of town for a week)

We seem to be at a crossroads. It seems that some want to make a big splash via a trade, some want a smaller trade, and some want to stand pat and let the season play out with the roster bascially as is.  I can see some value to each position, so what say you McCoven?

Poll
What should Sabean do?
1. Trade for Matt Holliday (somehow keeping MadBum & Posey), then happily pay him $20mil per year for 3-4 years.
30 votes
2. Trade for Matt Holliday (same exceptions), then happily let him walk and take the draft pick(s).
24 votes
3. Trade for Roy Halladay, with no one off limits in return.
14 votes
4. Trade for Freddie Sanchez
136 votes
5. Make no trades - this is the same team as 3 weeks ago, and they'll rebound to win the Wild Card. In the playoffs, it's anybody's game.

Chris, is that the same as #5?

The corollary, though: Don’t NOT make smart trades because you’ve overestimated our FUTURE team.

Okay, but...

…don’t not refrain from making stupid trades because you underestimate how much the current team will overestimate our future team, either.

I voted for Sanchez, also thinking Rios would be a similar situation. If we take a contract we dont have to give as much in return. Plus, its not like we have great prospects at either of these positions so it helps the future as well.

I think a trade will happen. A couple of months ago Sabean made a comment on KNBR that has stuck with me. He said that the front office would be more inclined to do something if we were in the race this season because the fans deserved it after suffering through the last 4 years. I’m paraphrasing but that was the gist of it.

Not just the fans, either. Players also get frustrated with front offices that don’t bring in help to win. Think of poor Matt Cain (who we’ll need to be seriously beginning to engage in extension talks with this winter) — don’t think he’d like to see some help? He’s yet to play on a team that finished near .500. We’re in a difficult situation, that’s for sure.

My Bucardo is better than yours.

Remember what happened when Pat Gillick didn’t make any trades for the Mariners in 2003? That team won 93 games and lost the WC by 2 games. Jeff Nelson during the season complained about other teams making moves and them standing pat. He was later traded for criticizing management haha.

The offensive woes of the Giants will not be cured with one trade. They have gaping offensive holes at second and left field and only a slightly smaller hole at first. Can they get Holliday and Freddy Sanchez without giving up the farm? If not – then no trades, bite the bullet for this year and next and hope that in 2011 Matt and Timmay continue to pitch at superior levels.

I voted Sanchez...

not because I think he will help us contend this year, but because of the lack of a 2B prospect near the majors. Noonan is the only semi-prospect at 2nd (assuming Frandsen continues to get the shaft), and many seem to have doubts even now about his future as a major leaguer. 2B is a definite hole in the team. The Pirates excel at making terrible trades, and I think it would behoove Sabean to try to deal for him, either now or in the offseason.

STEVE HOLM! refuses to be the odd man out.

by UnleashTheGore on Jul 23, 2009 9:43 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

This.

I also don’t know how much FSanch will help this year, but he will be a nice improvement over what we have. Also, based on what the Pirates got for Laroche, they seem to be in fire sale mode and wouldn’t demand a premium for the guy.

Insert witty signature of your own choosing here.

With Sanchez in the folds at 2nd Uribe could play for Renteria more.

Freddy Sanchez, at the right price, would be a good addition for this year and next.

@#$% Juan Uribe. Dios es grande.

+1

That’s the only viable option in this poll. That being said, “the right price” needs to be no more than 3 very fringey prospects considering what the Pirates got in their previous trades for McClouth and Nyger Morgan. We have the upper hand in this deal as the Pirates desperately need to dump salary.

Add the LaRoche deal to the BoSox to that list

The Pirates didn’t get much for LaRoche either.

This gets said every year, but seriously: one of these off-seasons the Giants need to decide which young player/prospects are going to be part of their future and which ones aren’t. Has the team seen enough of Lewis/Bowker/Schierholtz/Frandsen/Ishi/etc. to be able to make go/no-go decisions on them? Because, if you’re building for 2010 and beyond, you need to figure out where your biggest holes are (TWSS!). And it feels like they’re still trying to figure that out.

On the other hand

You’ll have to openings in the OF and three LHH young outfielders. None of them look like sure bets to me as everyday players.

I wouldn’t blame the Giants for looking for another OF.

weren’t we told by Sabean, in April, that a reason for the Giants’ not making a big move in the off-season was so that they would have the money to make a possible big move at the trade deadline?

by campanari on Jul 23, 2009 10:07 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I don’t think it was quite such a cause and effect kind of thing, but he did say that given our lack of offseason spending we would probably be able to be active in the trade market.

by FluLikeSymptoms on Jul 23, 2009 12:28 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I voted for Sanchez as well simply because it will make us better. Good enough to make the playoffs? Probably not; this team needs two bats to at least make the lineup somewhat competitive.
I think what’s really scary is that our pitching staff could fall apart at any minute. Sadowski is not a major-league starter and paired with Zito and Sanchez that gives us three big time question marks in the rotation. Trading Sanchez, or any quasi-MLB-ready starter from anywhere in the organization, seems like a pretty dumb idea to me at this juncture. Which, of course, severely affects our ability to trade in the first place. Ugh.

by InTimmyWeTrust on Jul 23, 2009 11:01 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I really think we need to trade for Sanchez, swap one of our lefty outfielders for a RHH outfielder to platoon (Elijah Dukes???), DFA Richie, and bring up Guzman to platoon with Ishi.

It was nice to dream of Roy Halladay, or Adrian Gonzales, but I think we should go to war with the guys we have and see how things pan out.

by OTTOMATIC on Jul 23, 2009 2:51 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I wanted another option

Don’t make the trades mentioned above, but the opportunity to make
a good deal without giving up the too much, should always be on the
table.

Those 4 moves are basically the right roadmap if we want to try to win this.
