Who are your top 5 favorite non Giants players?
Saw a top 5 favorite player thread on Minor League Ball, and thought it would be a fun thread to start here. I am leaving out Giants players since I think it's a given that guys like Timmy and Panda and Cain etc would be on all of our lists....so here is mine, feel free to list yours and explain why!
1. Joe Mauer - One of the best pure hitters in the game, probably one of the best defensive catchers in the game.
2. Evan Longoria - Picking up right where he left off last year into becoming one of the best young players in the game. Fantastic 3b defense combined with middle of the order power. Also very hard working and should only get better.
3. Chase Utley - As consistent as they come over the past few years....great with the bat and glove. One of the best all-around players in the majors today. Hard not to like the guy, just goes about his business and plays great ball every day.
4. Matt Kemp - I'm sure I'll get tons of flack for this, but I can't help it. Kemp is a raw player who has oozed talent for since he first ditched basketball for baseball full-time. 5 tool player, who continues to improve each year into one of the games better young outfielders. I just find him fun to watch (even if he's a Bum) and it's nice to see players with tons of potential turn their tools into skills.
5. (a.) Roy Halladay - Have been a big fan of his for a long time. He's very efficient, kind of an old school pitcher who is able to go 9 innings every time out. And he's a Yankee killer, so he naturally is a favorite of mine for that.
5. (b.) Dan Haren - Another guy who I can't help but like since he first broke in with the Cardinals. Noah Lowry's old college teammate has done quite well for himself and turned into one of the top pitchers in the game. Good stuff + fantastic command makes for a fun pitcher to watch every 5th day.

PUJOLS, PUJOLS, PUJOLS, PUJOLS, PUJOLS (all in caps, if it didn’t work).
With the advent of A.Roid, it’s tough to look at hitters and think that they’re really doing on their own. Pujols just looks so natural at the plate and whenever he’s up, it’s ALWAYS an exciting at bat to look in on. He does a decent job with the glove at 1b too which is a bonus but man can that guy hit.

1) Pujols – Even though I think he used PEDs, the guy is just flat out amazing. Love to watch him play
2) Grady Sizemore – The man can do everything on the baseball field excellent. On the 80 scout scale, he could rate 65 on about everything.
3) Russell Branyan – I’ve always been a big fan of this role player, it’s nice to see someone finally jsut plopping him at 1B and giving him 500+ PA’s
4) Trevor Hoffman – Just because of his intro and changeup
5) Justin Upton – He’s the most scary talented player I’ve seen. We’ll just see how much of it he can materialize
I love Pujols too, but to be fair to him on the PED thing….I’m willing to bet at least 4/5th’s if not more ML players are using or have used PED’s. If they didn’t use flat out steroids, than they used HGH, if not those than Andro or Ephedra or some other substance that later became banned when it was discovered they were bad for people to take. Then there’s countless other OTC products that I think are probably at best sketchy or definitely help players enhance their performance in the weight room or regain energy and strength. I think the amount of “legal” supplements that get passed off as being different from roids or HGH that really irks me. A lot of that stuff is either a gateway to, if not a smaller derivative of steroids. Like andro for instance…
Yeah, it’s just really hard for me to believe someone so amazing could seemingly come out of nowhere.
I mean a scrawny JuCo player taken 402nd overall becomes the best player of our generation seemingly overnight? I mean he went from 402nd pick to all star in 18 months.
I know the draft is far from perfect (it’s filled with mostly failures) but it’s still baffling to me that people could be so wrong in 18 months and how a good could literally just transform that quickly. A-Rod, Bonds, and Griffey were all highly touted prospects who lived up to their ceilings. The same goes for today’s bright stars like Lincecum, Longoria, Upton, Hanley Ramirez, etc.
I can easily buy a good player being passed over that much in the draft, and improving over time, but the best player in the world misses 402 picks and increases in size? In 18 months? tough sell for me
by NeifiChicken on Jul 20, 2009 10:20 PM PDT up reply actions
Perhaps, but there is just the possibility that Pujols happened to fall through the cracks—one of the only scouts who DID see him quit because his team didn’t pick him, I’m sure everyone knows this anecdote.
I only have a signature because I recognize everyone else by their sigs, not their usernames..
This argument is just dumbfounding. You really think he’s a legit 402nd pick, but this incredible mysterious magical drug made him into one of the best hitters into the history of the game?
It’s just a shame that the 401st pick didn’t have access to the same PEDs.
not saying it's the ONLY reason
obviously there had to be some good talent there to begin with, but the guy also grew substantially as an amateur. Unlike guys like Bonds and Sosa who grew before our eyes, Pujols was already big as a rookie, even though at the time of his draft he was a lot more lanky

1. Miguel Cabrera- because I saw him play in the 03’ WS when he was still just 20 and I thought to myself, “Dayum, he’s gonna be really good someday.” And then he was.
2. Ichiro- I saw him at the All Star Game at AT&T taking flyballs in the outfield with the players’/managers’ kids. He was fucking ridiculous. He was setting up under flyballs and making behind-the-back catches and entertaining the fans the entire time until the pregame festivities started. I also find it awesome that somebody so freaking small (he was hard to distinguish from the kids) can rake major league pitching.
3. Pujols- because he’s going to break the homerun record and his name is not A-rod. He is also not a douchebag, which thereby makes him and his talent even more respectable.
4. Fielder- because he’s fat as hell and it makes me smile when he runs. I also like his homerun bat toss.
5. Guerrero- because he swings at anything and still hits it. Pure hitting talent.

I sat a few rows behind the plate at Comerica Park last summer when the Angels were in town. I watched Vlad turn on a pitch up in his eyes and hit a frozen rope into right center. The sound that ball made coming off his bat…He’s ridiculous.

1. Pujols – The man is a beast.
2. Ichiro – Anyone who can hit a ball that bounced five feet in front of the plate for a stand-up double gets props.
3. Hanley Ramirez – AKA, the only person I would gladly trade Bumgarner, Villalona, Alderson and Posey for. Yes, all four of them.
4. Justin Upton – Kinda happened out of nowhere to me. I always thought B.J. was the Upton to watch, but of course, the far more entertaining (and apparently, more talented) of the two is a D’Back.
5. Ken Griffey Jr. – I still love watching The Kid play.
Proud adoptive parent of Billy "Duke" Neukom. He's got balls of steel.
Probably the list I'd go with out of all the ones posted so far
I have never seen anyone interact with the crowd during a game like Junior.
Substitute Omar for Upton and that’s probably my list. I was so glad when the Giants got him, just to get to watch him so much.

1. Ichiro

(courtesy of Lookout Landing)
Plus, even though I know it’s overrated, I love watching guys who get a lot of hits.
2. Pujols – I’ll never forget the dead silence of 30,000+ at the Astrodome after he hit that home run in the 2005 NLCS. One of the most majestic sports moments I’ve ever seen on television, though its magnitude was diminished a bit by the following couple of nights. Joe Buck actually did a good job of commentating on it as well, which was almost as shocking to hear as Pujols’ moonshot was to watch.
3. Jamie Moyer – I love pitchers who can’t hit 90 mph but still manage to get by at a league-average level, though Moyer seems to be slipping closer to replacement level. Post-2003 Greg Maddux used to own this spot, and overall Greg Maddux is my favorite player whom I can remember playing (90s and later). I was really disappointed in that one offseason one or two years ago in which we could have but did not sign him.
4. Ken Griffey, Jr. – Awesome to watch as an all-time great, and it’s strangely nice to see a 600-HR player decay like an old man due to injury and… oldness. He’s probably the one active player for which a news report stating he took steroids would make me genuinely sad (yes, I know Bill Simmons made the same point).
5. Grady Sizemore – WALKS! HIGH SB% (not including this season)! DEFENSE! POWER! NICE SMILE! Hooray.
I like cheesecake.
I wish I had a gif of it, but my favorite Ichiro moment was when he gunned Terrence Long at third base on the fly from deep in the OF. T-Long was surprised to say the least.

The ball traveled 230 to 250 feet on the fly, never rising more than 10 or 12 feet above the ground, until it smacked into the glove of third baseman David Bell, a perfect strike a foot above the bag. The astonished Long was tagged out.

Albert Pujols – Not only is he amazing to watch play, but he’s done a lot for kids with Downs Syndrome and that’s pretty admirable.
Adrian Gonzalez – Live in San Diego, so it’s not hard to get a heaping helping of Gonzalez.
Curtis Granderson – His 20/20/20/20 season was pretty awesome, his blog was well-written and fun, and he seems to take a genuine interest in both the history of the game and volunteering.
Roy Halladay – My uncle passed away a little more than four years ago, and Halladay was his favorite player on his fantasy team. (“My boy, Roy.”) Have followed him closely ever since and love to see him succeed. I think my uncle would be thrilled with how he’s pitched this year.
Brian McCann – Seems like a good guy, and is a great, consistent player both with the bat and behind the dish. Plus, it helps that he’s not afraid to rock the nerdy glasses if it means he gets to play.

I’m not really too crazy about any non-Giants, unless you count ex-Giants like Feliz (yeah, I’ve always liked him). Anyway:
1. Justin Duchscherer. I like his delivery and his strange oval head.
2. Ichiro Suzuki. Attended a Mariners’ game in ‘03 and saw him throw out a guy who tried to take third on him. Woot.
3. Todd Helton. Don’t ask me why. I just sort of like him. Obviously I hope he fails against the Giants.
4. John Smoltz. I liked Maddux too.
5. Adrian Gonzalez. Ditto with Helton, e.g., I like him but I obviously want him to fail against S.F. His comments last year after Lincecum had struck him out 46 times were amusing.
Ichiro – don’t think this needs explanation since it’s on like half the other lists
Harden – I used to love watching him pitch when he was with the A’s. Gotta feel bad for the guy, too—he’d be considered one of the best in the game if he could just stay healthy
Pujols – duh
Matsuzaka – I just find the concept of someone who has like 18 different pitches pretty cool. People say he’s a failure but I feel like he could still put it together
Granderson – He’s just an awesome all-around player. Plus he kicks ass for my fantasy team.

1. Nick Swisher- Yanks thought he would be junk, and he was their best player for quite a while this year… always exciting, even when striking out. The most interesting thing about the A’s for the years he was there.
2. Ichiro- unlike any other player before him
3. Matt Stairs- always wish the Giants had him instead of Mark Sweeney and similar
4. Mark Teixiera- a great fielder and seems to be a good guy
5. Shane Victorino- as a rookie, not as an overhyped monstrosity

’09 players in no particular order:
Pujols – Evertyhing Yankee fans wish Jeter could have with a stick been but for longer
Sizemore – I love me some rangey CF that have a glove like fly paper. And this one can hit sometings as well.
Icho – If you don’t like him you probably are better off watching beer league softball game.
Zambrano – Sure I understand such guys can wear on you in close quarters but that man would rip out his own liver with his bare hands to win.
Franklin Gutierrez – I do love me some rangey CF that know what the heck they are doing with a glove. And his stick has come alive for the M’s this year.
That’s it! Katie bar the door for this 79 win team is star crossed! And I am loving it.

I like watching him. Didn’t put him in my top 5, but I’ve been a fan for a few years now. There was a catch he made a few months ago, I have no idea against what team, that was absolutely ridiculous. One of the best outfield catches of the season, IMO.

3. sam horn- wished he had gotten more of a chance, guy could hit
4. ruppert jones- favorite player on rbi baseball

Grady Sizemore – He’s awesome

Matt Garza – He kills the Red Sox
Alexei Ramirez – Looks like a skeleton and swings at pitches that would make Panda blush.

Probably more than it's worth
He’s cheap, so the Indians wouldn’t want to give him up.
I also don’t think he could play right at Mays field, and he’s a lefty.
Still, I would highly endorse an acquisition; he pwns.

Not sure about the order but here are some I like:
Peavy
Wright
Sizemore
Ellsbury
maybe tulowitzki (although I heard he grew up hating the giants)
In the original post you mention some players would be a given on all of our lists. I think it might be interesting to come up with an official McCoven’s Favorite Players list, ranking all the guys on the 25 man roster, or at least like top 10. Maybe I’m only interested because it’s been less fun watching the giants the past few games and I’m looking for a distraction from the losses so I can think about all the players I do like.

I like Peavy as well (should have put him on my list). I think it’s telling that he’s friends with a ton of players on opposing teams. Loved that he heaped praise on Cain a couple of years ago.

Not sure if I’m remembering right, but after he Bonds hit the long flyout against him in his last AB, didn’t peavy say something like “You never want to give up a homerun, but if there was one time I wouldn’t have minded, it was that at bat”? I hope I’m not making that up, that’s a really cool thing to say.

1. Shuichi Murata – I have the good fortune of being able to travel to Yokohama once or twice a year for my job. If it’s during baseball season I always try to catch at least one BayStars game. Murata is a beast at the plate and makes watching Yokohama lose at lot more fun.
2.Ryan Braun.
3. Miguel Cabrera.
4. Alex Ramirez – I’m no Yomiuri fan, but this guy awesome. Plus it’s nice to see a foreign player have such success in Japan.
5. Yu Darvish – This dude can pitch. I’ve never had the pleasure of seeing him personally, but I have watched him on TV a few times and he is always dominant. I also like that (for now at least) he claims to have no desire to play in the U.S. when he becomes a free agent. He’s pretty much the only super star player in Japan to say such a thing.
