Around SBN: 2012 Budweiser Shootout Entry List Released

Post-Game Thread

I could use another four days off.

People I'm angry at right now: Edgar Renteria, Rich Aurilia, and Edgar Renteria.

And where's my damn pizza?

Also, I'm annoyed with Edgar Renteria right now. And Rich Aurilia.

Can we please release Richie

Enough. This is beyond awful. And Renteria joins the Sabean hall-of-fame big money FA signings; sit with Edgardo Alfonzo over there, by Aaron Rowand, with Barry Zito and Matt Morris. Yay team!

Jonathan Sanchez. He's left-handed, like Barry Zito. His fastball breaks 80, unlike Zito.

Great way to start of 20 straight games. Lose with your best pitcher, kill your bullpen, and embarrass yourselves.

They just flat out can’t beat the Bums (currently 2-10 vs. the Bums). Tell they do that I don’t think the rest of the NL will take them that seriously. The will be stuck between pretender but not yet contender status.

After last night’s Vets-gasim line up crapped the bed (again) I almost see the Rox passing us as a good thing. Either it would be the end of 7 out of the starting 8 being over 30 free agent signees (who’s current skill levels are basically fungible or just a bit above) starting the or the end of Big Head. Either way I get a team back that I can happily root for again.

We lost that game because of the starting lineup. He had to go all righthanded against Maholm like he was freaking Randy Johnson in his prime. Yes, Maholm is tougher on lefties than righties, but your lefthanded hitters are better than your righthanded hitters. That has to be your main consideration.

because it doesn’t seem like he brought his plate discipline with him from the minors.

+1

At this point I don’t care if the need to put the pitcher in #4.

After last night it is obvious could not care less about string his less terrible bats together so he can semi reliably mount and threatening rally every few innings. He thinks (and demands) his few decent bats are good enough to place crap in between them and they will jump start the crappier ones. The strategy might work if his good batters are as effective as Panda but they are not and Big Head just will not adjust his strategy to the talent on hand. Instead he demands the talent execute what it is poorest at.

The at-bat late in the game where he rolled over on a GD 2-0 pitch sums it all up. He’s looking for one pitch and one pitch only and he still manages to get him self out by hitting a pathetic dribbler.

He really is a great example of needing to drop down a bit and maybe is bat gets going again. Also an example of Big Head needs to go a pair and use Whiteside more often. I am not the biggest Whiteside fan but Molina has looked worn down to a nub for over a month now.

Not sure I consider the out a home a good defensive play.

The ball arrived way before the runner and I don’t know of any catcher in the majors that doesn’t make that play.

I thought he had a horrible game behind the plate, he was having trouble catching/blocking all game long. He almost cost the game in the 7th when he didn’t get the out on the strikeout.

Keep in mind he has made remarks in the past that could be read as his inner fan boy having strong Dodger tendencies. The key words here being " could" and "inner fan boy". Nobody is defending the lineup. It was lousy. We all knew it.

But — right or wrong, logically or illogically, rationally or irrationally — baseball fans thrive on superstition and trying to create the Right Energy and so forth. You are part of the McCoven community, which is a real community made up of real people. Part of that is some admittedly silly stuff, like respecting our customs and norms. One of those is posting that gif before Giants wins are secured. If you are going to be part of our community, you might consider some respect for the feelings of other real people who really make up this community.

Seriously, Richie really needs to go. Sure, Renteria has been bad, but because of his contract we are stuck with him. Richie, on the other hand, has no contractual reasons for us to keep him around. He is below replacement level at this point, and does not appear to have the ability to hit major league pitching. He is at 2002 Shawon Dunston levels right now.

Something else

I know that this was only one game, but these are definitely the types of games that we need to win.

Despite the fact that the Giants are in the wild card lead, there are a whole hell of a lot of teams that are nipping at their heels, and they will probably continue to need to be one of the top two or three teams in the NL to maintain that lead.

The Giants cannot afford to lose games to Pat Maholm led Pirates teams when Timmy is on the mound. With Zito going tomorrow, there is a clear risk of dropping an important series to a bottom feeder team. That is not the type of things that playoff teams do with regularity.

Like I said in the series preview, managers set their rotation to get the best possible matchups they can get with the help of the all star break. This moron somehow manages to make sure that Zito essentially gets two starts in the space of three games. If you’re so hung up on putting a lefty between Tim and Matt, why not use Sanchez, who’s probably your hottest pitcher based on his last start?

Proud new dad of Edgardo errr Edgar Renteria!!!

and I keep saying… he’s trying to get the most out of Zito so they can move him before the trade deadline.

I wanted to like Zito, I really did, but now, I dunno… I woke up this morning wishing this game was on NOW, just so we could get it over with. Now with a weather forecast of 110º heat AND a Zito start… there’s a black cloud of impending doom over the whole damn day.

by Merope on Jul 18, 2009 7:57 AM PDT up reply actions

“he’s trying to get the most out of Zito so they can move him before the trade deadline.”

But wouldn’t not having Zito pitch really be getting the most out of him?

I’m with rxmeister — I can’t believe Sanchez throws a no-no, and then has to watch from the bench as Zito gets two starts before he gets another one. That makes no sense, even if it didn’t run the risk of letting Sanchez get rusty when he was in a great groove. I get that they’re going to keep running Zito out there due to his contract, and their slavish devotion to treating vets like they own the place, but how did Zito earn the #2 spot in the rotation coming out of the break — by having the worst stats, or by having the worst last start?

And it should be obvious to anyone in baseball: Ishikawa has SOME chance of improving against LHP (greater than zero chance) and offers good defense, whereas Aurilia has NO chance of improving whatsoever in anything, and offers lesser defense. So there is absolutely no loss whatsoever in having Ishikawa in there, the possibility of gain, certainly some more seasoning for TI.

You’re talking about the guy like he was Bonds. When he became an FA he overvalued himself and asked the Giants for 4 yrs 32 million. He then went out on the market and found out that all he was worth was one year at 4 million! He continues to overvalue himself today by thinking that he’s still a major league player. BECAUSE WALKING HIM INTENTIONALLY EVERY TIME REGARDLESS OF SITUATION IS A RECIPE FOR DISASTER, EVEN MORESO THAN PITCHING TO HIM. AAAARGH.

Seriously. he’s great but if you pitch to him, he is still going to make an out ~55% of the time. Walk him when it makes sense, but both of his HR today were solo HR, in the 4th and 6th innings. It makes no sense to walk him in those situations.

Funny you should say that.

When I came back in the 11th ( dinner, dogs etc) and looked at the box and results I thought " So this is what baseball was afraid of with Rose managing." I am not saying Big Head would do that – In fact I can’t believe he ever would be does love the game too much – but the very fact his actions even placed that though in my head, however briefly, is a testament to the monument of stupidity and bullheadedness he built last night.

by daveinexile on Jul 18, 2009 7:07 AM PDT up reply actions

That's actually sort of a tricky thought experiment,

How to manage the Giants to lose without looking like that’s your ultimate goal so you don’t get caught and can keep on doing it? So the obvious things of putting Lincecum in the bullpen and sitting Sandoval for not being veterany enough are clearly out. I guess I would probably do things like be sure to sit Schierholtz and Ishikawa against all LHP’s to give as many AB’s to Aurillia and Torres as possible, maybe try to finagle my post-All Star rotation to give Barry Zito as many starts as possible in the second half, you know, subtle stuff like that…

err… I mean, no, I would do something totally different from what Bochy’s doing right now. Totally different.

One of the more publicized elements to the Kevin Towers/Bruce Bochy falling out involved Vinny Castilla. Castilla was awful. Bochy kept playing him. Towers would say, hey, did you ever think about, you know, not playing him? And Bochy said something like, if you don’t want me to use him, why in the hell is he on the roster? So Towers released Castilla. It’s kind of like a bedtime story, no? After the last sentence, you tuck in your kid and smile, and your kid wishes this were the kind of world where fairy tales like that could really come true.

Are we seeing the same thing now with Aurilia, and could we possibly see an equal result?

I like this story

No one here gets out alive.

by Bond16 on Jul 17, 2009 9:33 PM PDT up reply actions

I forgot about this story, but I was just about to make this same point.

I think it’s clear to all of us that Aurilia is done. But I think the blame is somewhat misplaced when it lands on Bochy. I just think it’s difficult for a manager to completely bench one of his players, and never, ever play him. I mean, as a fan I’m thinking, “I’d bench him!! I’d say, ‘Sorry Rich but you’re horrible and I can’t in good conscience let you see the light of day’.” I’m sure we all wish Bochy would do something along those lines. But IRL a major league manager does have to consider his players’ feelings. He has to consider player morale. As long as Aurilia is on the roster, I’m sure Bochy feels as if he has to play him at least a little.

Going into tonight’s game, Aurilia had only had 4 ABs this month—3 in one game, when he started at 3B against Roy Oswalt, a RHP. And he homered off him. The one time this month (before tonight) a lefty started against the Giants, Travis got the start.

I do think Aurilia should not be on the roster. But Brian Sabean is the guy who ill-advisedly signed Aurillia, and he’s the one who truly has the power to get rid of him. To me, the ongoing Rich Aurilia debacle is much more the responsibility of Brian Sabean than it is Bruce Bochy. Sabean should learn the lesson that Kevin Towers finally did when he got rid of Vinny Castilla.

Why couldn't McCovey have hit the ball just three feet higher??

Agree with your premise, but not the application

Yes, a manager has to consider the psychology of the players in addition to their physicality. Sure. In NO WAY does that mean that Richie should START under hardly any circumstances, and for DAMN SURE not the FIRST GAME AFTER FIVE DAYS OFF. Ridiculous. Aurilia knows he isn’t doing well; it’s not like he is sitting on the bench wondering why he is there.

by daveinexile on Jul 18, 2009 7:24 AM PDT up reply actions

Fair enough...

OK, good points. And look, I’m not trying to absolve Bochy of all blame. I agree that the timing of Aurilia’s start was poor. Exceedingly poor, perhaps. But I did want to point out that Bochy has curtailed Aurilia’s playing time pretty severely of late (not severely enough, thanks to last night).

To me, the problem is about 3 parts Bochy and 7 parts Sabean. Sabean, who is so ridiculously enamored with veterans and intangibles and speed and aggressiveness at the plate, and has hired managers and coaches throughout the system with the same values. Sabean, who has saddled this team (and us) with five straight years now, of punchless lineups. Sabean, who presided over a minor league system that failed to produce a major league caliber hitter for 12 years. Sabean, who hasn’t a clue how to evaluate major league hitting. When Sabean’s farm system produced no viable catchers, second basemen, shortstops, outfielders, or first basemen, he went out and signed whatever washed-up, second or third-tier veterans happened to be available. That strategy has given us years of non-entities like Edgardo Alfonzo, Edgar Renteria, Michael Tucker, Ryan Klesko, Dave Roberts, Jose Castillo (maybe fourth or fifth tier), and (ahem) Rich Aurilia. Even Sabean’s most glorious successes have been with players who have only been moderately productive, guys like Ray Durham, Mike Matheney, Omar Vizquel, Aaron Rowand, and Randy Winn.

So, as much as I dislike seeing Aurilia in the lineup, and as much as I am willing to join in with the angry mob that is calling for Bruce Bochy to be slapped upside his sizable head for having the temerity to write Richie’s name on a lineup card, I still say that Brian Sabean is the guy who ultimately is keeping the Giants from winning a World Series. I don’t have confidence that this roster of hitters is anywhere near enough to win a World Series—even with the supremely talented pitching staff leading the way. And I don’t have confidence that Sabean has even a whit of a clue as to how to properly make the very few moves needed to take this Giants team to that championship level.

That’s what’s bugging me right now.

Why couldn't McCovey have hit the ball just three feet higher??

by tobias on Jul 18, 2009 12:14 PM PDT up reply actions

We don't disagree

I would add the Ellis Burks experience as an ongoing detriment: Ellis was plucked off the ash-heap of MLB, and goes on to be THE indispensible ingredient in our 2000 team. But the drawback is that Sabean, instead of recognizing that for a blessing and a lightning bolt in a bottle, he saw that as a business model. Dammit. It’s lightning in a bottle when something like that happens. Christ almighty. So he’s been trying to re-create the Ellis experience ever since. Grrr.

I kinda want this to happen

So we don’t pretend this is a good hitting ballclub. Either changes will be made, or we can forget about pretending to go for it this year and wait for the cavalry next year.

It’s the wake up call we need so people stop looking around and think we can win with what we have. We can’t. This offense fucking sucks dick.

by jctGamer on Jul 17, 2009 10:25 PM PDT up reply actions

With Lincecum and Cain, the Giants could be in this the rest of the season (but losing 1-0 or 2-1 in said games cancels things out).

by SFGuy on Jul 17, 2009 11:17 PM PDT up reply actions

If we lose tomorrow and the Rockies win, we are no longer the leader of the WC. I kinda want that to happen. It is the wake up call we need.

by jctGamer on Jul 17, 2009 11:23 PM PDT up reply actions

It’s entirely possible but for some reason, I have confidence if the Giants have the regular lineup other than Molina out there.

by SFGuy on Jul 17, 2009 11:24 PM PDT up reply actions

that will happen no matter what. We just have to play the hand we are dealt.

In other news, Baggs new article makes it sound like even the Giants know Aurilia is a problem. In the end though, I"m sure the roster move for 5th starter is going to be Bowker option to AAA.

It’s a game like this that reminds us how low a priority getting Halladay should be.

I would settle for no more lineup cards were 7 of the starting 8 are over 30 years old and were signed as free agents. Funny how that type of lineup cards have not done well for like 5 years for the Giants.

It is also funny when more than 2 of the starting 8 are under 30 and not free agent signees this team wins and occasionally score runs. Perhaps Big Head is just trying to collect more data points to as to figure were the more talented ( or less disastrous) players are?

I wouldn’t bat Bowker second, but I don’t want him killing rallies after Pablo either. Batting Nate and Ishi back to back scares me. It makes me think he’ll pinch hit Aurilia late in the game if the Pirates bring in a lefty.

I might have to turn the game off if he hits just from depression. I love the guy but enoughs enough, he’s the last guy on the team you’d want hitting

by PiKAgiant on Jul 18, 2009 1:13 PM PDT up reply actions

I Agree with your point.

My wish is the The Big Head figures Panda is gettinga bit of a reputation as a hitter and but placeing Bowker in front of him Bowker will see more fastballs. Panda is good but I don’t think he has reached that status yet but Big Head knows all.

That’s it! Katie bar the door for this 79 win team is star crossed! And I am loving it.

by daveinexile on Jul 18, 2009 1:29 PM PDT up reply actions

having Panda behind him would just make me want to throw Bowker nothing but those low and inside breaking balls that he can’t hit/lay off of.

We need to evaluate Bowker and the best way to do that is to get him as many ABs as possible. He almost guaranteed to see 4 ABs batting second.

by superk1ng on Jul 18, 2009 2:51 PM PDT up reply actions

Why cant we have this lineup for Timmy. This lineup should score at least two, but it will be moot when Zito gives up 11 runs.

Wait a moment now.

With out repeated direct orders for the GM’s office you have have at least 4 over 30 free agent Vets in the starting 8 else the Big Head just comes compleately unraveled. He would probably start double switching people in teh 2nd inng regaurdless of the score.

Then lock him in his office together with Aurilia where they can talk about the good old days instead of hurting the team.
