The D-Backs are Haunting Me (AKA why I may love the Halladay Trade)
I, like many others 'round these parts, believe that the Giants are set up for an extended run of excellence. The farm system seems loaded, most of the youngins' getting a long look this season are meet and/or exceeding expectations, and there is a lot of payroll that's going to be freed up this coming offseason. Hey, the Giants' are even ahead of schedule, win wise. All this aruges against trading for Doc Halladay, a go for it move if there every was one. However, there is the Curious Case of the Arizona Diamondbacks. Loaded with prospects, a little ahead of schedule in 2007, good times are here to stay!! Or not. Nearly all of their young players have failed to develop the way nearly every expert expected (and a lot of us amatures as well).
I guess the real question here, and one that I'm not smart enough to decide for myself, is do the Giants' try for the blockbuster Halladay/Rios trade and go for it now, when they clearly have a chance, or keep the prospect core intact moving forward?

I believe what the D-Backs are experiencing is the exception rather than the rule.

we don't have nearly as much talent as them
especially in the outfield.

We don’t have as much as the Dbacks do/did either. The comparison is flawed from the start.

I was not compairing the Giants and the D-Backs talent on the field. I was trying to voice the difficult process of deciding to make a huge trade, and give up a lot of talent, or stay the course.

it's even more difficult for the Giants
because they have less talent to give away

I’m not sure how the D-Backs story make you want to trade for Halladay. If anything, it should do the opposite since they traded the farm for Haren and haven’t been to the playoffs since.
Anyways, trading for Halladay/Rios shouldn’t cost us the farm. If it does, it seems like an obvious no.

good point. I’m not saying the Halladay trade (or any other blockbuster of this sort) should be made….it just seems that playoff chances are sometimes not there for even the most talented farm systems.

Actually, the D Backs prospects have been great.
Upton and Reynolds are great hitters, Drew is solid, Jackson is injured
I dont know why theyre losing
Congratulations and Thank you Jonathan Sanchez.

the reality is that they sold the farm a year after they graduated their most talented prospects.

Zavada's is actually a really good story.
His dad died recently and he quit baseball in order to literally take care of the family farm. Now he’s back and his moustache has a 1.69 era in 23 appearances.

We might not have to sell the farm in order to get the deal done. If the Mets can get Santana for what they gave up, It’s not out of the question for us to get Halladay and Rios for something like Sanchez, Alderson, Crawford and a lesser prospect

This is basically the real question.
Would you be willing to give up Alderson, Villalona, and two ML-ready players (like a Sanchez, Sadowski, Winn, Molina, etc) to get Rios and Halladay this year?
My general thought when it comes to potential trades this year is unless we’re getting Hanley Ramirez or Prince Fielder, Bumgarner and Posey are untradeable. Obviously Lincecum and Fourth Guy Who Doesn’t Have a Cy Young What a Pussy are staying put, Zito will never get traded, and trading Panda would result in riots throughout the city.
But packaging Alderson and Villalona together for a guy who seems to always be right around 20 wins, an ERA around 3, and pitching more complete games in a season than the entire pitching staff of most MLB clubs, plus a very talented outfielder who would love to take advantage of Triples Canyon and has given occasional All-Star worthy performances, is INCREDIBLY tempting. Imagine a 3-4-5 with Rios, Sandoval and Molina. Then, as your mouth begins watering but your brain says “NO, WE CAN’T, WE CAN’T”, think about Lincecum-Halladay-Cain.
Is it trading the farm away? Sort of. But if we can do this and manage to get Halladay for a few years, imagine the insanity of Lincecum-Halladay-Cain-Bumgarner-Sanchez-Zito. That’s right, SIX MAN ROTATION MUFUCCAAAZ. (that is assuming Sanchez would stay, which I think, after throwing the no-no, is a given)
