Big Trade With Toronto?

We could be getting Rios and Halladay?

Star-divide

I don't know where he got the rumor but Evan Roberts of WFAN just reported that he's heard the Giants are discussing a blockbuster deal where they would send Jonathan Sanchez and prospects to Toronto for Roy Halladay and Alex Rios. I don't know who the prospects are, but the other day Roberts was trying to think of the name of the kid pitching prospect the Giants have, and he couldn't remember his name so you can't expect him to remember the names involved here.

Roberts was saying if the Giants pull this off the wildcard race would be over, and the Giants would probably even catch the Dodgers. I'm down with this in a big way as long as Bumgarner and Posey aren't involved, but you figure if the Giants take on this much salary, they should be able to hold on to their elite prospects. I would also expect them to take back a contract for this year like Randy Winn, although he could have them on his no trade list.

July 16 must be Canadian April Fool’s Day…

There’s just no way Evan Roberts of WFAN (who can’t even remember the names of the prospects we’d be dealing) gets the BIG SCOOP on the Halliday trade. No freakin’ way. The Canadians are laughing the tops of their heads off right now.

Please no MadBum or Posey

Alderson, ok. Villalona, maybe. Probably one of Nate, Flew, or Bowker going to Toronto. Just guessing here.

Insanity is just a state of mind.

I, like, porposed this a few weeks ago

At that time I thought about Bumgarner, Crawford, Sosa + eating Rios salary for Halladay and Alex Rios. If the giants could take on salary, that is, and if the jays take Flew with them for the spot.

Change it to Alderson, and I'm down. Probably takes Sanchez too.

I would be concerned about salary

If we did something like this, I’d be nervous that we wouldn’t be able to pay Lincecum, Cain, and Sandoval the tens of millions they deserve.

It all depends, right?

Halladay and Rios for Sanchez, Neal and Crawford, for instance, wouldn’t be a bad thing, in my opinion. Of course, no way in hell Toronto does that. Alderson for sure. Who else, I don’t know.

I have heard some speculation that this could end up like the Santana situation, where between a no trade and desire for extension, the team trading him has to take a lot less in return. If that’s in addition to getting rid of Rios/Wells contract, I suppose I could see Bumgarner not having to be included.

That's kinda my feeling

That is a LOT of money coming off the books for Toronoto Next year. Sanchez + Alderson would be a nice addition as well.

They aren’t winning now and with the construction of their division they aren’t gonna win any time soon – so why not dump sal and pick up a few good young players for the future ?

And while we all know that Rios is fairly paid, it has been widley reported that the BJ’s don’t think so and feel that his contract is an albatross.

by FairweatherFan on Jul 16, 2009 11:06 AM PDT up reply actions

Looking at what everyone else can offer, can they really beat Sanchez+Alderson+Villalona+dumping Rios’ salary? I don’t think so, but I’m not familiar with Philly’s top prospects who are supposed to be pretty good.

by FluLikeSymptoms on Jul 16, 2009 11:20 AM PDT up reply actions

That could work out better for us any ways. Say Bowkers makes it well enough to stick that gives the Giants 3 guys to relibley counted on teh hit 20hr a season. Yeh I could learn to live with that.

With Snider and Lind (and Wells not going anywhere) would they really have much interest in Bowker or Nate? I guess they’ve got the DH spot to plug somebody in, but they dont seem like guys the Jays would love.

Yah. I agree that I have hard time seeing the Jays wanting much to do with Bowker. But like I said I am more than fine with that.

I think the reason Bowkers (& Anvil’s) name has come up is the Jays – if reloading – probably have SS & hart of the order bats near the top of thier list. Bowker & Anvil are about the only guys we have that could fit “hart of the order prospect”.

Lind seems like a DH or Snider. Either one will be a permanent DH over the long haul. I’m pretty sure neither one bring much defensively. Could see Lind moving to 1B too.

And if they’re getting rid of Rios, I don’t see why they wouldn’t consider taking another young OF in return in the package.

by Hobbes2d on Jul 16, 2009 5:22 PM PDT up reply actions

Rios would be a waste in LF – he has a great arm and some of the best range of any outfielder in baseball. I think, given time, he could be a real GG in AT&T’s RF.

Prefer Rowand in SOUTH Chicago

Wish Sabean would get White Sox involved:

White Sox: Rowand

Blue Jays: White Sox/Giants prospects

Giants: Halladay and Rios

Rowand/Rios annual salaries wash. Giants add Halladay’s contract.

One concern coming from players – have read where both Winn and Lincecum – is that the Giants currently have great chemisty and any changes might disrupt that.

Why dump Winn?

He only has 2.5 months left on his contract and he’s by far our best D outfielder. We’ll need him if we pull make the playoffs – I don’t want to see Bowker, Schierholtz, or Lewis in the OF with a 1 run lead in the late innings of a playoff game.

Why move Winn?

A) 115/127/148 vs. LHP is really not good.

B) If he excepts arbitration he is probably making around $7MM next year. Please look at item A and from your own opinion.

That’s it! Katie bar the door for this 79 win team is star crossed! And I am loving it.

by daveinexile on Jul 16, 2009 5:12 PM PDT up reply actions

But “salary dump” implies that you pay part of his salary and get nothing but 1 barely fringey prospect in return. I have no problem trading Winn for something halfway decent, but if we’re going to be paying a lot of his salary for the next 2.5 months I’d rather he be playing for us while he collects. I also seriously doubt that he doesn’t at least double his stat line against LHP this half season. He’s got to regress back closer to his avg.

"There ain’t much to being a ballplayer, if you’re a ballplayer." - Honus Wagner

by Fla-Giant on Jul 16, 2009 10:30 PM PDT up reply actions

Fair enough. Agree to disagree.

If Winn was a couple years younger I would buy into regressing back up (ie my current mad fascination with Rios) but once a player gets to his middle 30’s I tend to lean towards " Better a year too soon then a year too late" unless the team is in dire circumstances.

Also if the team is truly going for it the last half of the season just how many pitchers (not named Cain) can you afford hitting in a line up? To me that underlines the whole reason why they should have test driven the crap out of the kids (and other question mark position players) between April and July. If your team is in it you have a real solid idea what a player is capable of doing this year, and not so capable of, and after the All Star break you use them accordingly. Too me Winn, for ’09 , has proven he is a platoon player tell he proves himself otherwise. Just like with Nate or Lewis trying to earn playing time. A manger is not in the business of giving playing time. They are in the business of making players earn it.

Earning playing time brings me to third reason I would move Winn instead of holding him. I have none trust that Big Head will moderate an ageing vets play time to reflect that players current skill(s). He lost that trust years ago and has not done a single thing to earn it back.

Villanola obviously has a much higher ceiling, but pitchers with Alderson’s control just do not fail completely at the major league level. It doesn’t matter if you’re throwing 85 MPH fastballs if you can put it wherever you want it, and he obviously can. Hell, Barry Zito is throwing 85 MPH fastballs and he doesn’t have great control, and he’s won a freaking Cy Young award.

When it comes to prospects, I’d dump Villanola; there are a plethora of first basemen. That’s arguably the most abundant offensive position, while we see time and again teams that need pitching and have to pay through the nose to get it.

I have to agree at this point – TI has improved steadily since the beginning of the year when we wanted to trade for Johnson and NJ has kind of stagnated at a good but not great level (for a 1B).

Offensively this year, he’s been a dead average MLB 1B. That’s better than Ishikawa, of course, but will it really make that much of a difference?

by Evan on Jul 16, 2009 12:38 PM PDT up reply actions

The ball is of course in the Jays' court

They are thinking that there’s no way they can compete in the AL East either now or even a few years down the road since they haven’t come close in more than decade. However, they still have several high paid players on their books for a few more years and I can’t imagine they are drawing huge crowds in hockey country to help offset those costs, especially if they continue to be non-factors in the division and missing the playoffs altogether.

So now, they have a chance to rebuild and get rid of their high paid players with younger, cheaper players. It took Tampa 10 years but they have built a contender with homegrown players in the Jays’ own tough division. They know they won’t get super-spectacular prospects they want for Halladay or Rios simply because teams know their intent in unloading those contracts.

I know the Giants won’t offer the whole farm for them both and that’s what they are looking for, but they have few options left now. In the end, it all comes to this possible scenarios:

1) Keep Rios and Halladay through 09, finish sub .500 and watch playoffs on TV while having spent more than $15 million for both in the latter half of 09.

2) Keep both through 2010, maybe finish over .500 but still bettered by the Red Sox and Yankees. At this time, they have spent more than $25-$30 million on both players but with little results. Halladay walks at the end of 2010 and they have no prospects to show for it.

Obviously, this is likely just a rumor and nothing more but I still feel bad for the Jays that they have to compete with the big spenders and 2 other teams with great young talent in the same division.

Is Sanchez more or less valuable than such a prospect? I have no idea how to value Sanchez because of all the uncertainty around whether he will ever reach his very high upside.

The Giants have been talking to the Blue Jays about a pitching-laden deal from their end involving lefty Jonathan Sanchez (who tossed a no-hitter last Friday) and their ‘07 No. 1 draft pick, righthander Tim Alderson, in which they would take Rios back as part of the deal. I think the reason that we were excited about this idea is that we could give away nothing to get Rios, who would be an upgrade, without giving up some untouchables to also land Halliday when our rotation’s isn’t really the weak spot.

In this scenario, we’d be reverse-leveraging Rios against Scutaro, I guess. GIT R DUN!

Toronto's boxed set

Mayor,

I think it’s Halladay and Wells. Either way, neither Rios nor Wells is enough bat for us. I’m sticking with my desire for Uggla at second: he’s having an off year and he’s still better than ANYBODY we have in the system. He blocks no one and gives us a great #5 power guy.

Hi, Wes! Long time, no see.

I disagree that Rios wouldn’t be enough bat for us, that is, I don’t think we can know one way or the other. I’m not cheerleading the trade but wouldn’t mind it (assuming it doesn’t cost us TOO many of our good prospects). But I do agree that Uggla would be most welcome… but nobody seems to be reporting that the Giants are in talks to get him. We can only overreact to what is reported!

If the Toronto Blue Jays stick to their guns and insist that any taker for ace right-hander Roy Halladay also accepts outfielder Vernon Wells in the deal, the New York Yankees may be the only fit, says Newsday’s Anthony Rieber. He cites the Bronx Bombers’ ability to absorb Wells’ contract that runs through 2014. Wells is hitting just .263 with nine home runs and a .312 on-base percentage this season and will make $99.25 million between now and the end of his current pact.
Yankees GM Brian Cashman is mum on Halladay, noting baseball’s tampering policy. But we know that if a good player is on the market, the Yankees are interested.
The Philadelphia Phillies are not out of the market for Halladay after signing Pedro Martinez, GM Ruben Amaro Jr. said.

by lehmsbobby on Jul 16, 2009 2:39 PM PDT reply actions

In that scenario (Wells must go with Haladay) I would think the Bum’s are a fit as well. They have both the short term need, deep enough pockets and enough young MLb talent along with farm help to not necessarily be crippled be Wells monster of a contract..

that’s just a NY writer who thinks the Yankees can just buy themselves a pennant. I’m surprised he didn’t say they should get Halladay, Wells AND Rios. The Yankees spent alot of money this offseason, but most of it was just replacing salary that came off of their payroll. They’re not adding Halladay and Wells at 35-40 million when they’re already sitting in the wild card spot. As for the Dodgers, they barely scraped together the cash to sign Manny, I doubt McCourt even has the money to make this deal.

You got a point on McCourt and signing Manny. I was looking at the The Bums being only committed for a bit over $64 MM in 2010 and none of the kids a past Arbitration 2. Now I am not saying it would be wise for the Bum’s to do it but it is possible.

On the one hand..

I like the trade for its potential. On the other I kind of feel that Sanchez is, at the moment, untradable. This season has been very special and he is a large part of it. If he has turned the corner and is able to consistently throw strikes (and this very well may be the case with the windup tinkering he and rags did) then we are getting extremely ripped off.

If Sanchez is good now then he and Halladay are a wash and we are just taking on a ton of salary and an OF that we don’t really need. I say stick with the rebuilding plan and hope that we have enough to make it into the playoffs this year.

I understand the trade high on Sanchez idea but if, and it really is an if, he is over whatever was holding him back then he is incredibly valuable. There are not many lefties that throw as hard and as nasty as he does. We’ve seen what he can do when he is at his best and it is one of our greatest moments. Do we really want to give that up?

Rios is hitting 262 with 10 homeruns. Last year, he hit 292 with 15. How is that better than Randy Winn? I don’t think the Blue Jays would do that without Bumgarner in the trade. And I’d hate it if we traded Bumgarner. I’d do it for Alderson and Sanchez though.

by parisspleen on Jul 16, 2009 8:14 PM PDT reply actions

How is that better than Randy Winn?
  • Winn has not a season better with 193 ISO that I can find. Rios has had 2 seasosn with better then 200 ISO already. Winn has a carrer 135 ISO. Rios in this his terrible year has a 154 ISO. The last time Winn topped a 154 ISO was 2005.
  • Rios has a better glove.
  • Rios has a better arm.
  • Rios (in this a down year) is hitting 263/306/444 VS LHP and Winn is hitting 115/127/148 vs LHP.

Will that do for starters?

I don’t think the Blue Jays would do that without Bumgarner in the trade

They Jays are in fiscal hammer lock. They have been in front of their division for most of this season so far but they are drawing 6,700 people less a game ( that a lot of beer, hot dogs, parking and t shirt sales not made). They are also on the hook for more payrool next season then tehy are paying this years and they Jays have yet to sign a single free Agent, have an arbitration hearing or promote a guy for 2010.

This is not say that Giants can offer Joe Castle’s used jock and get him but they can deffently get him for cents for a lot less the what has been “normal” in hte last decade or so.

I think the Blue Jays broadcaster is trying to find things to talk about. He probably would love to have Sanchez and Bumgarner for Halladay. From listening to the trade rumors I’ve heard, if I were a Blue Jays fan, the only player I’d want is Kershaw from the Dodgers. Maybe Chamberlain from the Yankees. If I were a Blue Jays fan, I’d want to make up better trades too.

Rios is a way more expensive Winn. Toronto knows that. I’m on the fence about Halladay but Rios would be a familiar headache.

by Rorsavelt on Jul 17, 2009 3:16 AM PDT reply actions

say what?

Even in Rois off year ( this year) he has a higher ISO the Winn has posted scicne his mircle 2005 season. I couldn’t see an ISO over 193 for Winn in any season in his entire carrer. Rios has already posted an ISO over 200 twice. Rios plays bettter defense and has a much stronger arm. At the high point of Rios contract he is getting paid Rowand money ( $12MM) for a guy that has been a 3 WAR play and is still under 30 that is very fair contract.

Ways they are simmilar: I guess they started their carrers in their AL East. Neither has not been A’s. Niether look to Dave Kingman, Willie McGee, or thrown a No hitter. Help a guy out here because I am runnign out of simmilarities.

I have to say I’m not a big Sabre guy so WARP is not something that has ever appealed to me, not to say it isn’t as relevant as any other stat. That said Randy has actually averaged a higher WARP in his career, but they’re both basically 3. Since Rios’ first year 2004, Winn 17.8, Rios 17.4 and that’s with Winn being 6 years his senior.
For me though, I think of 2 guys who are plus defenders in right field who can cover center as well, 2 guys who will give you about 15-20 steals a year and who have similar OPS. Rios certainly has more power, but like Randy, still not enough for a corner outfielder. He has to have a better arm as Randy’s is a ramen noodle. Obviously Randy will get on base more often in order to even out the OPS.
Randy has been a fine Giant and is underappreciated to be sure, Rios may be the better player but I guess my point was that I don’t feel like he would be a marked upgrade over the last 3 1/2 years and that’s before I start wondering about him getting Rwned (as in Rowand, patent pending) at ATT.

by Rorsavelt on Jul 17, 2009 8:08 AM PDT up reply actions

If you want a thumper with a "Meh" glove in RF for the Giants those days left with the ’Stick. Could you imagine G.A. Hill running around in RF at May’s Field? He couldn’t do it. He would have to play LF now days. So that means the team needs a very good glove out in RF and no amount of wishing will change that. I am open to names with a very good glove that you think will do better in 2010, and onward , that provide better power that will be available. I just don’t see one myself.

You kind of slam and poor mouth Rios ability to play CF well but think about it for a few moments.

1. Do you think Rownad will play well enough to man CF well his entire contract? If yes, do you think we will play CF every single game? If you answer "No" to either of those the team needs a back CF.

2. If the team needs a back up CF what is better to tie up a roster spot for Torres type clone (and in essence create another reserve Cather position) or a player that could play the other defensively demand spot in the Of and slide over thus letting reserve corner outfielders rest your CF and let the team use the designated back CF spot for other uses ( ie a real pinch hitting threat, extra ‘pen arm, etc)?

3. If you don’t think Rowand will stay in CF his whole contracts just were is this replacement candidate going to come from? There is not much on the farm for then next 2-3 seasons that look to be MLB ready and likes of Coco Crisps will not come that much cheaper the $12MM to merit the down grade.

But seriously, I really think something like this is going to get done. This has been one of the most unexpectedly exciting seasons I can remember, so it just seems right that we’d make a trade like this.

I don’t know much about prospects outside the Giants organization, but didn’t the Mets sort of steal Johan Santana from the Twins, even when seemingly better possibilities were out there involving Boston and the Yankees?

Halladay + Rios = the Giants Farm system. No way the Giants pull this off without giving up a serious boat load of prospects. I say trade for one of them (preferably Rios) but not both.

Nuekum was on the radio a few days ago and said the Giants weren’t going to make any trades that would cost the club a lot of money. If he was being honest about that statement, you can kiss this rumor goodbye.

I still think Sanchez is the missing piece to this team. Bumgardner can fill any needs in the SP, the bullpen rocks (minus Valdez and good old Walker (uh, I mean Howry) the team just needs a #2 hitter. Yea the offense has many deficiencies, but I think Sanchez gives you two needs: defense and OBP. I wouldn’t mind seeing the Giants grab a decent 1st baseman as well.

Halladay shouldn’t be our priority.

just because I am in reality check mode
Roberts was saying if the Giants pull this off the wildcard race would be over, and the Giants would probably even catch the Dodgers.

OK, Halliday is good, like 6-8 wins/year good. He’s probably worth +4 wins for the 2nd half of the season. The Giants 4/5th starters have been above replacement value, so he’s probably not even worth 4 whole wins to the Giants in half a season (minus 10 games)

The Giants are 7.5 games back, and are projected to finish 13-14 back of the Dodgers if you think that the first half of the season reflects on the “true talent” of the current teams. So, no, adding Halliday will not make the Giants “probably” catch the Dodgers. It might lock up the wild card, if the Giants can manage to average more than 4 run per game.
