All WAR Allstar Teams
Since we all know that the normal All Star teams are the equivilent of student body elections - but what would the teams have looked like had they been based soley on players performance in the first half of this year ?
I took the WAR leaders at each position in each lead. I carried one backup player at each position, 6 starters, 6 releivers, and 6 generic OF's.
Here's what I got. Interesting how it deviates from who was actually selected. Players within groups are in order
NL:
Starters: Tim Lincecum, Dan Haren, Javier Vasquez, Josh Johnson, Ubaldo Jiminez, Joel Pineiro
Releivers: Johnothan Broxton, Rafael Soriano, Heath Bell, Brian Wilson, Chad Qualls, Todd Coffey
Catcher: Brian McCann, Yadier Molina
1B: Albert Pujols, Prince Fielder
2B: Chase Utley, Freddy Sanchez
SS: Hanley Ramierez, Ryan Theriot
3B: Ryan Zimmerman, Pablo Sandoval
OF: Matt Kemp, Justin Upton, Raul Ibanez, Colby Rasmus, Ryan Braun, Jason Werth
AL:
Starters: Zach Greinke, Justin Verlander, Roy Halladay, Felix Hernandez, Josh Beckett, Cliff Lee
Releivers: Andrew Bailey, Joe Nathan, David Aradsma, Mike Wuertz, J.P. Howell, Mariano Rivera
1B: Kevin Youkalis, Justin Morneau
2B: Ben Zorbrist, Ian Kinsler
SS: Marco Scutaro, Derek Jeter
3B: Evan Longoria, Brandon Inge
OF: Ichiro Suzuki, Franklin Gutierrez, Carl Crawford, Torii Hunter, Juan Rivera, Nelson Cruz

None of these seem very off the wall. Scutaro is a big surprise as is Franklin Gutierrez, but they’re both having great years.
Matt Cain: He'll save children, but not the Dodger children.

I think that the pitching staffs are a little surprising.
I don’t know how many AS votes Todd Coffey got this year, but I’m guessing not a whole lot. Same w/ Andrew Bailey

Bailey made the AS team.

It’d be interesting to see if Bailey would have made the team if the “at least one representative per team” rule were not in effect. I have a feeling he would have been snubbed in favor of a player on a bigger market team or a team doing well.

You know what I wonder about the one representative per team rule? If all the whiners got their way and it was eliminated, how long would it take before only 4 or 5 teams were represented on an annual basis?
I thought of that because on Baseball Today’s awful podcast, their whipping boy for why they hated that rule was always Freddy Sanchez, who totally deserved to be there. They never suggested say Ted Lilly could have been passed over for Yovani Gallardo because the thought that the Cubs didn’t deserve to have a rep didn’t occur to them — only the thought that Pittsburgh or Oakland shouldn’t have one enraged them (and again, Bailey, legit).
My Bucardo is better than yours.
A hot August weekday, before a small crowd, when the only thing at stake is the tissue-thin difference between a thing done well and a thing done ill. Insofar as the clutch hitter is not a sportswriter's myth, it is a vulgarity, like a writer who writes only for money.

Excellent point. It’s rather unfortunate that the deserving players get whipped for being on a crappy team while the undeserving players get a pass because they’re on a large market team.

Interesting study, but of course raises the political questions of ASG worthiness.
You have set the standard as performance in the first half of the given season. That’s your prerogative, but (a) balloting starts around the 1/4 mark and thus necessarily includes considerations other than first-half stats, and (b) ignores that some people think the category “all star” means “best overall players, some of whom might be off to slow starts in a given season, but who are still more compelling than others.”
Would the rosters be different if one were to calculate WAR since the previous ASG? At least that would get a whole year of data and would maybe cover some of the things that are in people’s minds when they start voting.

That’s my voting philosophy. It takes a real bad 1st half to wash away a great 2nd half from the previous year. Likewise I don’t go for career scrubs off to a hot start like say Zach Duke. Between 2 candidates with stats equal, I vote for career accomplishments, likability (due to team or demeanor) or the guy I would ‘trust’ more on my fantasy team. Calculate that with your fancy maths!

this would be improved
if you added in WAR from 2nd half of last year. Only about 4 times the work! Gettir’ done!

Colby Rasmus surprised me, hes gonna be good. I would not vote for Pinero, Ubaldo, Coffey, Wuertz?, Franklin despite their good years.

He’s going to win 20 sometime soon. If he can keep his head on straight when things start to go wrong (see: Sanchez, J), he will be a top-10 starter.

1) Having a representative from each team is a cynical attempt to maximize the size of the TV audience.
2) Electing generic OF is just stupid. CF is just too different a skillset to lump it in with the corner positions. The CF starter for the ASG should be required to have at least half his regular season starts at that position.
3) A proper weighting system would be 1/3 career value expressed as an average 162 game season, 1/3 full prior season, 1/3 current half season.
4) Player voting is dumb. The game is for the fans, not to see which millionaires can help another millionaire pick up a bonus.
5) Manager selections are dumber. The manager should only set the batting order and pitching. If a given player is unavailable, the next highest vote-getter should make the team.
