TIMMY: Oh, and Pop?
TIM’S FAKE DAD: Yeah?
TIMMY: I know you’re coming straight from work, but please, please, can you try to change out of your mattress salesman get-up? I’m sure Albert Pujols can get a good price on a Serta just for being Albert Pujols.

He wasn't insulting the nationality, nor was he doing it for humor.

He was describing a slice of something the way he saw it— and certainly chose his words poorly. But there IS a point to be made that players from the Caribbean basin do not value plate discipline when compared to other sources of major league ballplayers. That is generally true, and it was specifically true of the Giants he was describing. (it is also true, of course, of other types, as we are seeing this year.)

Forsan et haec olim meminisse iuvabit... Maybe.

by Mayor of 311 on Jul 13, 2009 7:04 PM PDT up reply actions

Except...

The most prominent Caribbean’\ player on that team had the highest walk-rate.

Several of the non-‘Caribbean’ players had some of the worst.

It was not only insulting, but that one word made the statement wrong! Inaccurate! Whatever you want to call it. So why did he put it in?

Because of the reputation of Caribbean players. I’d call that prejudice.

Brandon Crawford: Your SF Giants 2011 Opening Day starting SS!

by Azmanz on Jul 13, 2009 7:39 PM PDT up reply actions

Not quite the only comparison to make there.

Pablo would swing full-out at EVERYTHING. Pujols actually paces himself a bit. Let’s say the chance of a player getting thrown off enough to mess up his body and thus his swing is, I don’t know, 15%? (Obviously, pulling that number out of the air; not claiming scientific validity. But Abreu, Wright, Granderson are all mentioned as having been adversely affected by the HRD.) The gain of winning this silly exhibition is zero. So a 15% risk that is associated with zero gain is simply not worth taking.

Brandon Crawford: Your SF Giants 2011 Opening Day starting SS!

by Azmanz on Jul 13, 2009 10:03 PM PDT up reply actions

Sigh. Yes. THIS year. This year isn't last year. Presumably, an entire off-season would be enough to counter the effects.

Really, are you trying NOT to get the point? Or do you just not understand physiology enough? Example: people get a knee injury or something; this leads to them walking slightly differently (called a gait), which throws off the rest of their body because little muscles and joints are forced to do something they don’t usually do; this causes back pain, hip pain, etc.

Lesson: little changes in how you physically do certain things can multiply, cause pain in other ways, which forces more changes in how you physically do things, and so on. There are whole branches of medicine that deal with this. (Orthopedics, for one.)

So of course whatever effects that might occur would be expected to be gone by the next year.

It was like, 9-0 in the eighth, and the tigers came back to just lose like 9-8 or 9-7, and boy was i getting bitched at for wearing a tiger jersey. People just felt bad for me, haha
