OT: Top 10 (favorite) albums of the decade

Since it's the All-Star Break, with four straight days of no Giants games, it's time for the off-topic equivalent of rosterbation. Namely, what do you think are the 10 (or 5, or 3) best albums of the decade? Or, to put it another way, which albums from 2000-2009 are your favorites?

Star-divide

My list is top-heavy on the first half of the Oughts, partially because it's hard to attach "classic" status to albums that are only a couple years old, and partially because I'm an Old Fart who is no longer up on the current hip bands. (You kids get off my lawn, and take your TV On the Radios and Dirty Projectors with you. Just kidding...I like the former and just haven't heard the latter.) This is in no particular order, although Boards of Canada, Radiohead and the New Pornographers are probably my Top 3:

Beulah, The Coast is Never Clear (2001)
Radiohead, Kid A (2000)
Wilco, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot (2002)
Boards of Canada, Geoggadi (2002)
New Pornographers, Twin Cinema (2005)
Sufjan Stevens, Illinois (2005)
Arcade Fire, Neon Bible (2007)
Jurassic 5, Power in Numbers (2002)
The Delgados, Hate (2002)
Low, Things We Lost in the Fire (2001)

Have at it, Giants fans and music lovers.

Just have to get it in here toward the top of the thread that Led Zeppelin has not released any new albums in the last 10 years so there is no list to be had.

WHOOO I LOVE TOPICS LIKE THIS

Are we including 2000 in this? If so:

10. Patrick Wolf – Wind in the Wires (2005)
One of the best albums in terms of atmosphere that I’ve ever heard.

9. Grizzly Bear – Veckatimest (2009)
Definitely my favorite album of this year and my band of the summer.

8. Scott Walker – The Drift (2006)
ARTY UNLISTENABLE PRETENTIOUS CRAP.

7. Sufjan Stevens – Illinois (2005)
Maybe a bit too long and maybe a bit too pretentious but that’s okay, sometimes.

6. (tie) The National – Alligator and The National – Boxer (2005 and 2007)
I can never decide which one is better so I’ve just decided not to try.

5. Sun Kil Moon – Ghosts of the Great Highway (2003)
Mark Kozelek’s best job pairing up his great songwriting while at the same time, avoiding his tendency towards excess in terms of length (Duk Koo Kim is long but it doesn’t drag, so I don’t mind it.)

4. Tom Waits – Alice (2002)
His best album, I’ve come to think.

3. Arcade Fire – Funeral (2004)
Was probably too hyped up back when it came out, but it really did deserve all the accolades.

2. Radiohead – Kid A (2000)
Better than OK Computer, imo.

1. Modest Mouse – The Moon & Antarctica (2000)
Yeah, it’s become cool to act like this one sucks now and The Lonesome Crowded West is sooooo much better but I refuse to bow to the times because this one has much better pacing, no shitty songs and a much more interesting flow.

I started a list of honorable mentions but it got really long so I stopped.

top of my head, more or less:

Bob Dylan, Love & Theft
Sleater-Kinney, One Beat
PJ Harvey, Stories from the City
MIA, Kala
TVotR, Return to Cookie Mountain
Joanna Newsom, Milk-Eyed Mender
Randy Newman, Harps and Angels
Eminem, Marshall Mathers

That’s only nine, but I’m sure I’ve forgotten something vital.

by Evan on Jul 13, 2009 2:01 PM PDT up reply actions

I agree completely. I think part of the problem with her second album is the production: on some songs the harp is mixed so low I can barely hear what she’s playing. And it’s the interaction of the harp, and the intricate rhythms she plays, with the vocals that make her first album so great.

Ted Leo and the Pharmacists, The Tyranny of Distance
Of Montreal, Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer
Stars, Set Yourself On Fire
Beulah, Yoko
Jenny Lewis With The Watson Twins, Rabbit Furcoat

Also, the list of great Magnetic Fields albums definitely begins at 69 Love Songs.

And jponry, I have to DQ Alice because it was originally written and performed and even partially recorded way back in ‘92. How much, if any, was recorded this decade is open to interpretation of Tom’s often conflicting and sometimes mischievous remarks on the topic.

Ah! Stupid time! They might be my all time favorite, go to a club blind discovery — went to the Empty Bottle in Chicago to play some pool and Magnetic Fields were there (well, four of them anyway) and playing 69 Love Songs and just destroyed me. At that point they were selling the three disks separately — took me a couple years to get the full packaged set.

I’d seen Magnetic Fields a few years before and didn’t care for them much, but right around the time that album came out, I saw Kelly Hogan play and she sang “Papa Was a Rodeo.” It was a showstopper; probably half of us in the club went out to buy 69 Love Songs the next day.

Sonic Youth – Rather Ripped
Bob Dylan – Love and Theft

I love this list, even though I would have chosen different albums for most of these bands.

by Evan on Jul 14, 2009 5:53 PM PDT up reply actions

Hmm, really? I see you obviously prefer One Beat to All Hands and all I can say to that is “You’re No Rock ‘n’ Roll Fun.” Other than that, I think there’s a few close calls: Sonic Nurse over Rather Ripped? Ok, I guess. I consider pretty much every YLT album since President Yo La Tengo essential, so if you wanted to say Summer Sun or And Nothing beats I Am Not Afraid, I won’t argue. And all right-thinking people should own both East Nashville Skyline and The Devil You Know.

A funny thing about this list, though, that upon looking at it again makes me think I need to expand my horizons a bit: fully half of these albums are not my favorite by that artist. I would take Dig Me Out by S-K, Fight Songs by Old 97s, Electr-O-Pura by YLT, Daydream Nation by Sonic Youth, and Blood on the Tracks or Blonde on Blonde by Dylan if they were in the right decade. Sadly I just don’t listen to as many records as I once did, so I don’t discover new artists too quickly anymore. Got a few good ideas from this thread, though.

If you can, download a couple songs first.

“Hello Operator” which is off of De Stijl

“Little Bird” also off of De Stijl

A key thing to remember about White Blood Cells is that is contains absolutely zero guitar solos (in the traditional sense). De Stijl, and Elephant after that showcase the musicianship of Jack White moreso than White Blood Cells.

As stated in my favorite albums list, White Blood Cells is my #1 White Stripes album, but I thought I’d give you my own heads up as a huge fan.

There is nothing really like this going on today. Sure, there are bands that try to copy those, but most don’t know how to play the instruments with the influences of the time that came before those two bands. They play with the influence of those two bands instead.

I agree with jponry’s disagreement. A lot of shitty pop bands probably don’t know music before Black Sabbath, but there are many musicians out there today who are quite well-versed in older music — read some interviews and it becomes clear.

Also, I’m not sure what point you’re trying to make with Black Sabbath. Their music is very simple, both in terms of instrumentation and composition. What do you hear in their music that is no longer going on today?

I sort of disagree that there is “nothing like this today” – I think there are some, although you might classify them as imitators, a sound is a sound.

I think I listed bands above that are “Throwbacky”:
White Stripes
Donnas
System of a Down
Jet (Jet kinda sucks… but they are at least in the old school metal spirit)

I am not a huge fan of Neu metal like Korn or … hell, I dunno. “Bands like Korn”… they seem to have lost it somewhere in a effort to be “harder” or something (nothing wrong with that)

I think some of the goofy 70-80s metal spirit is captured by the Pop Punk bands like NoFX, Blink 182, Offspring, Bowling for Soup, and dare I say it… Green Day. Green Day is… I dunno… like the Journey of Pop Punk. Well, maybe Van Halen on a good day.

Coheed and Cambria

Mastodon (their new album, Crack The Skye, is the one for you)

The Sword (try Age of Winters)

Priestbird

Opeth (try the Damnation album)

Three

Dream Theater

also, I’m not sure how someone plays with heavy metal influences of BEFORE Sabbath or prog influences BEFORE Rush’s 2112. I guess you could look at obscure Swedish stuff or Uriah Heep, or even King Crimson but why would you choose to be influenced by endeavors when you could be influenced by perfection?

C&C – no
Mastodon – should be interesting but everytime I’ve tried it’s pretty meh and hasn’t grabbed me in any way
The Sword – no, exactly the type of band that I referred to in my original post. One dimensional version of the past that misconstrues what was good about it.
Priestbird – never heard, will try to
Opeth – No, bores me to death
Three – never heard
Dream Theater – fuck no with a !

Hello brother. I’m thinking about any CDs that I bought new this decade and could only think of Brainwashed by George Harrison (which I do think is a great album, so much feeling in it) and live albums that were released or re-releases.

Man I forgot how long ago 2000 was (no particular order)

1. Atmosphere – God Loves Ugly (2002)
Solid album from start to finish… got Atmosphere their first real national attention.

2. Aesop Rock – Labor Days (2001)
So damn good. Massively respected and an instant classic.

3. Radiohead – Kid A (2000)
Some think it’s a pretentious album but I’ll never forget the first time I heard Kid A (the song). My favorite Radiohead album.

4. Modest Mouse – Everywhere and His Nasty Parlour Tricks (2001) (technically an EP)
I’ll never forget the first time I heard this one either. I can (and have) listened to this on repeat for hours.

5. Sage Francis – Personal Journals (2002)
Not as into Safe Francis’ thing as much as I used to be, but holds a solid place in my heart.

6. John Frusciante – The Empyrean (2009)
The best of his recent solo releases, in my opinion. Some filler, but some real standout tunes as well.

7. A Perfect Circle – Thirteenth Step (2003)
If Aenima was in the last decade it would have this spot, but 13th Step was damn good too.

8. The Mars Volta – De-Loused in the Comatorium (2003)
They were already over the top but some of the songs on this album are intensely strong (televators!)

9. Weezer – Weezer (Green Album) (2001)
I’m a blue album guy but this is the best Weezer album of the decade.

10. Elliott Smith – From a Basement on the Hill (2004)
Not my thing anymore but used to be a large part of my life.

I basically just thought up some of my favorite musicians and then picked out the best album they have done this decade. I’m sure I missed a ton of stuff.

Just skip straight to the top of the heap and listen to all Lucinda Williams’ albums. Car Wheels wasn’t this decade, but World Without Tears and Essence are both wonderful.

Also Patty Griffin’s Impossible Dream, Alison Moorer’s The Hardest Part, Steve Earle’s Townes.

For the classic stuff, I say start with the collected works of The Carter Family and then go to Nitty Gritty Dirt Band’s Will the Circle Be Unbroken, as well as all the outlaw stuff already mentioned. Plus Bakersfield’s own late great Buck Owens.

"Country is pop for Republicans, Americana is country for Democrats"

something something. But there’s more than a little truth to that. Two young artists producing what I’d call good country music are Ryan Bingham and Justin Townes Earle. BIngham is an ex-rodeo cowboy with a voice like gravel and a tendency towards asymmetrical songs; Earle is an ex-junkie and Steve’s son. Bingham’s “Mescalito” is on my list of favorite albums of the decade, and I also really like Earle’s debut, “The Good Life”. It’s all there: broken hearts, trains, guitars, heck Bingham is wearing a cowboy hat on the cover of “Mescalito”. (As he should, being an actual cowboy.) But it shouldn’t surprise that Bingham’s new album is now classified as rock, and Earle is folk.

Muse fans?

I think there was only one other person to list Muse… they’re a great band with a constantly changing repertoire of music. Matt Bellamy is a legit composing genius (he writes most of their stuff), plus he can play nearly every instrument in the band. I definitely would recommend them to those who haven’t heard of them.

how good is the giants' starting rotation? our rotation is so good, our 5th starters throw no-hitters. uh.

Favorite albums from the '90s that I discovered ten years later because I was too poor in college to buy more than a couple albums a month and we didn't have all this fancy file-sharing nonsense and I also spent too much time listening to Dave Matthews

1 – Bonnie “Prince” Billy – I See a Darkness
2 – Opeth – My Arms, Your Hearse
3 – Guided by Voices – Bee Thousand
4 – The Notorious B.I.G. – Life After Death
5 – Chavez – Ride the Fader
6 – Aphex Twin – The Richard D. James Album
7 – Drive Like Jehu – Yank Crime
8 – Silver Jews – American Water
9 – Slowdive – Slouvaki
10 – GZA – Liquid Swords

Not my top ten of the ‘90s — though the first four would make it — but the albums I didn’t get into until the past five years or so.

The Unseen- Quasimoto, very strange off the wall hip-hop from Mad Lib
Vampire Weekend-Vampire Weekend, a very enjoyable pop album from a talented group
The College Dropout- Kanye West, before he became a gay fish, he was an honest musician with very raw feelings and evident skills
Robbers and Cowards- Cold War Kids, already mentioned but this a classic to me, I still can listen to this all day
The Grey Album- DJ Danger Mouse, innovative and brilliant
Speakerboxx & The Love Below- Outkast, also already mentioned but I still know every word and moan to Hey Ya
Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix- Phoenix, cannot get it out of my head right now.

I have not listened to nearly enough music of the decade to make a definitive top 10, so these are just my favorites, not necesarrily what I think the best made are. PS I am really looking forward to Hockey’s debut Mind Chaos, that could creep into my top 10

http://www.splendidezine.com/review.html?reviewid=3226326019719108

" The stunning “I am Trying to Break Your Heart” opens the album; its heady mix of Big Star swoon, art-house pomposity and experimental weirdness coupled with beguiling-yet-beautiful lyrics (“I am an American aquarium drinker”) not only makes it one of the most impressive aural spectacles of recent memory, but sets the stage for the cavalcade of whimsy that follows. It soon becomes apparent that Yankee Hotel Foxtrot is not only devoid of filler — the mercurial grandeur of first single “Heavy Metal Drummer” is matched note for perfect note by the deceptively simple thump-and-strum of “Kamera”, which in turn measures up quite nicely to the effects-laden slice of immaculate pop that is “War on War” — but that it is a true song-cycle in the classic sense of the term. Elsewhere, Tweedy lets his whiskey-and-honey soaked pipes and imagistic lyrics preside over the funereal dirge of the brilliantly titled “Jesus etc.”, before handing the reins to his bandmates for the irony-and-cacophony-drenched “Ashes of American Flags”, and letting them run wild on the fiery, heavily Byrds-indebted (think Notorious Byrd Brothers as opposed to Sweetheart of the Rodeo) “Pot Kettle Black”. The sheer scope of Yankee Hotel Foxtrot is so utterly breathtaking that repeat airings only reinforce its stunning songcraft and otherworldly sonic splendor.

It will take years for the weight of what Wilco have achieved with Yankee Hotel Foxtrot to be felt throughout the music industry. In that time period you can expect them to leave legions of followers, scorers of hangers-on and plenty of industry speculation cowering in their wake. It can now honestly be stated that no other band on Earth sounds like Wilco; indeed, it is a most honest and forthright assertion of what they have accomplished here."

Top 10 (Plus One) Sacramento Local Albums of the Past Decade

Growing up in Sacramento, I quickly got into the local music scene. These are the top 10 (plus one) local albums of the past decade, in my humblest of opinions:

Agent Ribbons – On Time Travel and Romance
The Goodmornings – Black Gold, Texas Gold
Deathray – Believe Me
Lee Bob Watson – Afficionado
Jackpot – Moonbreath (or F+, depending on your style)
Anton Barbeau – In the Village of the Apple Sun (or Guladong, or Drug Free, again depending on your style)
The Common Men – Her Benign Touches
Low Flying Owls – Take the Scenic Route
Two Sheds – Strange Ammunition
Knock Knock – Girls on the Run

Honorable mentions to: Chelsea Wolfe (Mistake in Parting), Golden Shoulders (Friendship is Deep), Carquinez Straits (Where the Freeways Arc Over the Burnt Edges), Kevin Seconds (Rise Up, Insomniacs), Th’ Losin’ Streaks (Sounds of Violence)

Opeth- Watershed
Lacuna Coil- Comalies
Tool- Lateralus
Deathspell Omega- Fas- Ite, Maledicti, in Ignem Aeternam
Symphony X- Paradise Lost
Wolves in the Throne Room- Two Hunters
The Sword- Age of Winters
Mastodon- Leviathan
Stolen Babies- There Be Squabbles Ahead
Black Dahlia Murder- Nocturnal

I just hope somebody here has the slightest clue about any of the bands I listed, as judging from the lists above you all congregate at Echo and the Bunnymen shows to discuss the overthrow of capitalist society.

I've heard that I should classify my current interest as old-timey

rather than bluegrass, but I probably shouldn’t take that too seriously. OCMS just deepened my interest in revivalist Americana; I’ve dabbled Pine Leaf Boys (Cajun music) and Carolina Chocolate Drops (old-timey music African-American style). I’m not sure where Hot Buttered Rum fits but I just got their “Well-Oiled Machine” album and have been enjoying it.

And then of course there was my dalliance with Chris Thile.

I’ve never even heard of most of the bands listed in this post

I generally listen to classic rock, blues-rock and electric blues (primarily from the 60s – 80s). Some of my favorite albums from this decade are:

1. Albert Cummings – Feel So Good
2. Albert Cummings – From the Heart
3. B.B. King & Eric Clapton – Riding with the King
4. Buddy Guy – Sweet Tea
5. Bob Dylan – Together Through Life
6. Café R&B – Very Live
7. Double Trouble – Been a Long Time
8. Jimmie Vaughan – Do You Get the Blues?
9. Koko Taylor – Royal Blue
10. Robert Cray – Live at the BBC

1. Robert Cray – Shoulda Been Home
2. Robert Cray – Time Will Tell
3. Robert Cray – Twenty

by EliminateMe on Jul 14, 2009 3:43 PM PDT up reply actions

Also, I forgot the enterity of John Cale's solo output

quick precis of all of them

The Manics are an agit pop band who made some good records that were too long, some terrible records that were great, one all time classic record which might be one of the defining moments in all of human history, and then went a bit rubbish. Had two very tall members, and two very short, which is just marvellous. Key Record – Holy Bible (but find the UK mix, not the american one)

Helen Love: little known electro twee pop band (solo artiste, if you buy into the lore) who love japan and synths. Like The Ramones playing casiotones. Mostly notable for writing ‘Punk Boy’, which Ash later covered. Key Record – Radio Hits

Martini Henry Rifles: Made a lot of noise, took a lot of drugs, played a series of incredible live shows before releasing an album that was not so great. Played a christmas show we put on and did a drone pop verion of ‘walking in the air’. Key Record – Kill/Summer/Shit

Super Furry Animals: Beach Boys house pop. Once bought a tank, painted it blue, before later selling it to the guy from the Eagles. FACT. Key Record. Guerilla. or maybe Radiator. both.

McLusky: Loud, sweary, probably hate you. Tremendous lyrics, if you like contempt. Key record: ..do Dallas

The Loves: excellent combination of super hot girls and weird looking men (actually, this is wales in a nutshell, frankly). I saw them once, and mid song one of the girls playing keyboard walked offstage midsong, went to the bar and came back with two vodka and cokes. Class. Probably not worth buying anything but their early singles.

Mo-Ho-Bish-O-Pi. I actually don’t remember a lot about this band, aside from enjoying them, so I must have been drunk / trying to hit on girls / both when I saw them. I do remember their second record being terrible, though. Um. yes.

Melys. Alternated between filthy welsh language electro pop and Neutral Milk Hotel lovliness. Key Record: R\umours and Curses

Jarcrew. loud and shouty, pretty great. Buy anything, turn it up loud.

Gorkys, yes. Pretty great. but you know this.

Hmm, I wonder if that is true … I’ve always thought of it that way. Though I suppose another sense the difference for me is between albums (movies, tv shows, books) I’m supposed to like, and [stuff] I really do like.

I respect Radiohead and Wilco, for example, and do enjoy Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, but have I listened to it over and over and fed on it spiritually, like I do Patrick Park’s “Loneliness Knows My Name”? No. So YHF goes into “best” and LKMN into “favorite”.

Anthony Kiedis can’t sing. Therefore, I don’t listen to Red Hot Chili Peppers. This philosophy has remained unchanged for about two decades now.

by Grant Brisbee on Jul 16, 2009 12:03 AM PDT up reply actions

I’d agree, but I subscribe to the Led Zeppelin rule that a band can be great despite their lead singer. John Frusciante is a damn genius and Flea is incredible. Combine those with the competent drumming of Chad Smith and you have a pretty solid band.
Another reason why this album is so good is that it’s mostly the brainchild of Frusciante rather than their usual collaborative creative process.

Rafael Rodriguez: #8 on our list, n/a on a stat sheet.

I really respect Frusciante’s talent, but I just can’t take Kiedis. I started liking death metal when I learned to accept the vocals as something more akin to another instrument or percussion. When I listen to a pop/rock band, though, so much of every song has to do with melody that I can’t disassociate the singer from the song.

God, Ryan Bingham. Such love. Have you gotten his new album, Roadhouse Sun?

by shanghaijim on Jul 16, 2009 12:03 AM PDT up reply actions

Roadhouse Sun

Yeah I have. I can’t decide which is better, the much more balanced rock of “Roadhouse Sun” or the beauty of the 1-2 punch that is Southside of Heaven/Bread & Water on “Mescalito.” Maybe it’s dumb to compare them because they both kick ass.

by techsig12 on Jul 16, 2009 10:38 AM PDT up reply actions

Roadhouse is more balanced, true, so I guess quality-wise if that was the metier it would be a more “accomplished” album. But I love Mescalito and those two tracks. I also love “Sunshine” and “Take It Easy Mama”.

It’s something that builds up exponentially as you get used to the language, lineages and connections. Once you hit a certain bar, the pieces come together and you pick up bands, albums, genres without even thinking about it; before that, it’s just a jumble of names moving in and out of the picture. Much like baseball players, in fact.

It probably helps to be adventurous, too!

I guess I’ve just never nerded out (not intending the term nerd negatively, having been one most of my life in the actual pejorative sense) over bands. But that kind of exponential growth of knowledge via interest sounds like me and World War II.

eMusic is a great service for indie – and even local – music. I was surprised how many local bands are available on there, having recently picked up new releases from Golden Shoulders, Mike Farrell, Agent Ribbons, French Miami, and others.

Late to the party

I attended and graduated college this decade, listened to indie rock for a decent amount of time, and yet have never heard of 90% of the albums mentioned.

No order—

Radiohead – Whichever Ones They Made This Decade
They’re all good. Can’t believe no one’s mentioned these guys yet…

R&B MUSIC ALERT R&B MUSIC ALERT***
Aaliyah – Aaliyah
If there was one album I would suggest to check out it’d be this one, her absolute best. Was devastated when her plane went down in August 2001. Despite her songs being popular I feel she was underrated when she was alive. R&B as a genre is still at a serious loss without her.

Missy Elliott – Miss E…So Addictive
Best CD she’s ever done, too. Timbaland brought out the best in her and Aaliyah.

Rufus Wainwright – Poses
If there were two albums I’d suggest to check out this would be the second. The title track is one of my favorite songs, probably ever. Perfectly sung.

Thom Yorke – The Eraser
No one liked this one? “The Eraser” is another of my favorite songs of the decade.

Death Cab – Plans
Their “poppiest” album by a long shot. Coincidentally the only one I ever find myself going back and listening to.

MIA – Arular
Kala’s great too.

Utada Hikaru – Deep River
Just ignore this one if you’re not Asian, into Asian music, or don’t speak Japanese. Why can’t she write songs of this quality in English?

The Shins – Chutes Too Narrow
Can’t believe it took a fucking Zach Braff movie to get people to notice them.

Outkast – Stankonia
The “Bombs Over Baghdad” album has lots of good songs.

Honorable Mention:
-Hmm.. OK Computer didn’t come out this decade apparently, but I wore out that CD in college.
- Funeral is a great album. I was let down by Neon Bible
- Franz Ferdinand (S/T)
- Grand National – Kicking the National Habit
- Santogold (S/T). Missed the cut in favor of MIA
- Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Fever to Tell (a lot of first albums…)
- Girl Talk’s Feed the Animals makes me laugh (in a good way) and I dig mash-ups in general
- The Postal Service – Give Up

Also way late, but...

All things Giants have been making really depressed, but I love the community here, so in the interest of staying involved…

In no particular order:

The Strokes — Is This It?

An incredible album, from start to finish. That’s it, I’m one of those guys who still defends The Strokes from “overrated” accusations…

…Like, with violence.

Modest Mouse — The Moon & Antarctica, Everywhere and His Nasty Parlor Tricks

My favorite albums from my favorite modern band. Tracks that will change your outlook on music: Night on the Sun, Gravity Rides Everything, Third Planet.

Pinback — Autumn of the Seraphs

What can I say? I’m a fan of good melodies.

The Postal Service — Give Up

I love this album. I’m almost glad that Ben Gibbard and Jimmy Tamborello decided not to make a second one, simply because I don’t think that anything could even come close to what they made here.

Atmosphere — God Loves Ugly

I liked Atmosphere before they were popular!

Eminem — The Marshall Mathers LP

When I was eleven, I got a copy of this CD from a friend. When my mom found out what I was listening to, she flipped…and probably with good reason. Eminem’s (in my opinion) best album takes you to some dark, dark psychological depths.

Arctic Monkeys — Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not

Massively hyped, yes, but massively good, too.

Band of Horses — Cease to Begin

I’m getting fatigued, so I’ll just give you the cookie-cutter, adjective-noun, adjective-noun review: Lush soundscapes, powerful vocals.

Daft Punk — Alive 2007

Daft Punk rules. This is proof.

Madvillain — Madvillainy

I actually prefer Operation Doomsday (the crappy production makes it more endearing, at least to me), but that came out in 1999. This is almost as good, and that’s high praise coming from me.

Honorable Mentions:

Andre Nickatina — Conservation with a Devil (What can I say? I’m a “Yay Area” kid)
slightly stoopid — Closer to the Sun
The Strokes — Room on Fire, First Impressions of Firth
Modest Mouse — Good News for People Who Love Bad News
Arcade Fire — Funeral
Jedi Mind Tricks — Servants in Heaven, Kings in Hell
Vampire Weekend — Vampire Weekend
Voxtrot — Raised by Wolves (EP)
Sage Francis — Personal Journals
Restoring Poetry in Music — Pyramids in Moscow

…plus way too many more to list.

5. Arcade Fire – Funeral
4. Modest Mouse – The Moon & Antarctica
3. Les Savy Fav – Let’s Stay Friends
2. The Raveonettes – Chain Gang Of Love
1. Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Fever To Tell
